I chose only desktop so there is no Android, but there is ChromeOS that is counted separately from Linux.

Linux does not loose absolute numbers but it seems it is relatively not keeping up with Windows and this is disappointing. On the bright side, we know have a quite healthy ecosystems of games. Nonetheless we have now relatively less linux gamers than linux users.

The number of supported games is getting better :D
MaCroX95 1 Oct 2016
The picture looks nice, I hope that something in publishers' attitudes towards gaming changes so they would stop writing games originally built only for DirectX... If the game has planned cross-platform support from the ground up it literally takes them no money to release the game and just a little bit to support it and indie studios have proven that!

Eventhough these days I don't miss Windows OS at all since Linux fulfills both my computing and gaming needs I'd really like to see that change of game developing model since the Linux will probably be the place to run by users who will not stay on the path of Windows 10...

I've also seen some game developers like Epic Games who bash over Apple and Microsoft and their "closeness" but on the other hand majority of their games don't support Linux and neither are they planning to support it, probably being afraid of such risky and "non-profitable" moves. I really hope that such companies realize that people would actually prefer using Linux due to its' openness if they just considered Linux to be a real gaming platform just as they did Android on mobile side of things... Valve was the only company that was brave enough for such move and I believe that other companies who had similar opinions about open gaming don't realize that it's them on who the open-platformed gaming depends.

I am an optimist and believe that one day we will see at least some AAA day 1 releases that are not ports! :)

And not that I'm bashing over ports! They are great and they are closing the gap between the past and the future so companies like Feral, Aspyr and others should keep up the GREAT WORK!

I see good news on steam stats page.

http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

Windows 95.38% -0.33%

OSX 3.59% +0.25%

Linux 0.94% +0.11%

That is relatively quite huge ( 0.11/0.83 = 13% ) and is coming after a continuous growth in the previous months. So while steam statistics are not reliable it is still a very good trend. 2016 looks like is going to be positive and hopefully 2017 will be really good and hopefully 2018 will be huge in absolute numbers. :P

Also the number of Win10 users have actually decreased in the last month and I think that Microsoft is doing quite a favour to the Linux community with what they're forcing people into with win10. I don't know how statistically significant the numbers are but the adoption of windows 10 is not going as they planned at all and probably never will despite all the effort that they're putting into the promotion... It's literally like everywhere I look around there's Win10 logos in shoping centres etc. A lot of casual users will I guess just choose some flavour of Linux for everyday computing. Gaming is the biggest challenge for the Linux community, majority of casual users will find Linux as a good alternative to their computing needs.

While I wish your predictions will be true, I guess you're underestimating Mac OS. Of course, if someone has a hardware and get's pissed of on Windows 10, he is a potential Linux user, because he does not have a hardware for Mac OS. But if someone get's tired of Windows 10, he might switch to Apple products.
What's more, in my country (Poland) people behave like Mac is the best they can buy. Some time ago I was thinking, that only American people are up to Apple so much, but now I know many people that are eager to have what Apple produces (for example they watch Apple events online and they think that getting rid of mini-jack is great).
I already know 2 people that switched to Apple products recently because of Microsoft actions, and I am the only one around my friends and colleagues from work who uses Linux daily.
What's more - there is a software (for example Photoshop) that people use daily and can use on Mac, while they cannot use on Linux. Such a small things matter.
And while I love the work done by Feral, Aspyr, VP and all the studios that work on in-house ports of games, I guess gaming market is not the only one that needs to see need to provide their software for us, Linux users.
MaCroX95 2 Oct 2016
@wojtek88

I see what you mean and on mobile side of things it really doesn't matter that much whether you have an open or closed environment that much... However on desktop it does and it matters much because our PCs are supposed to be private machines that you use for your work... even apple doesn't force their users to update their system if they don't wish to and in Linux they have full freedom over their PC, however distros like Mint do things for them if they don't wish to spend hours on setting their OS to fit their needs, it's a nice "plug and play" distro. What Microsoft is doing with forced upgrades and updates is just the violation of everything that makes PC your own and whether people will choose to go with Linux or Mac (if they have the money) doesn't really matter because if there is concurrence and a few operating systems that are competent to each other and share some nice slice of a marketshare than companies need to work in order to provide their software and services on many platforms. For example Microsoft have decided to revive the Skype for Linux project and is now in open alpha version, they did not do it because they care about Linux users or because they want to support Linux desktop growing, the reason is that there is a lot of cross-platform chatting and video-calling services that already have full cross-platform capabilities and they had to do it in order to stay on that market otherwise they would be slowly replaced by hangouts and similar services.

Also if people switch to MacOS initially they are more likely to switch to Linux afterwards because these 2 systems are more alike than Windows and Linux. We need more great companies like Valve and Feral, also if Adobe decided to release Adobe CC for Linux it would be a huge dealbreaker for a lot of users that use their products but like to have their own and free OS.

And this is where you are wrong

People (especially casual users) won't switch to linux because they simply don't care.
Apple has a wonderfull way of brainwash..erm.. marketing :D

Most people simply buy a computer that has an OS pre installed, if they hate windows so much that they choose another OS, it wil be MacOS on an Apple computer.

Just look at your family / friends and tell me how many of those are willing to buy a computer OS free and manually install linux on that.

For the majority of people the computer just has to *work* without messing around with it. So even the people that do manually install linux will run into problems that will eventually make them go back to windows or MacOS because when they use that, things simply work as they should.

Linux (desktop) has a LONG way to go before it becomes an acceptable alternative for most people (think screen tearing, soundcard or very specific hardware, wireless printers, external HDD or a second HDD that needs to be mounted on boot [manually editing fstab anyone?] drivers for keyboards/mice and lets not forget the most important one.. Microsoft Office)

*edit*
even if the above named problems are not a problem for you (they aren't for me) they are for a LOT of people
MaCroX95 2 Oct 2016
@Spl-it

Every operating system has its flaws and when people are faced with problems on Windows they know what to do and on Linux they need to learn what to do in order to fix their problems and where to search for the solutions. Please stop refering to Windows as an OS where you don't run into any driver related problems or software related problems or problems in general because I've been using it for my whole life until about 2 years ago and am very familiar with its flaws and there are a lot of them... even way more than on Linux side of things for me... with Linux sure I run into problems but after fixing them they do not reoccur on that installation where as in Windows that is not the case... from time to time something just breaks on Windows and you must reinstall eventhough you don't know why and you didn't do anything inappropriate. It's just that people know where to search for the solutions on Windows side and are so familiar with it...

And yes... Linux has a lot of room for improvement but at least has a potential... Windows doesn't have it since Microsoft will not allow it to advance, just to the point they wish it to but on the other hand restricting users from everything that makes PCs great and our own.

And about having OS preinstalled doesn't mean that you cannot switch it if you don't like it... and don't think that I was forcing Linux upon them as MS does with Win10... they came to me alone and asked how to fix smth in Win10 and I suggested them to try Linux... they have been all extremely happy with it because for non-advanced users it's enough to have Linux installation that just works and have 1 person for backup if something goes wrong... And I've always had more help from community rather than Apple or Microsoft themselves even on Windows side because they don't give a **** about their users, they're just economists.

*Edit: I was able to set my neighbour's HP Wireless printer with their proprietary Linux drivers with ease... things have started to change a lot lately on the hardware side, these are rather myths that things are mostly unfixable on Linux...

Totally agree. I can name few major problems from my experience:
- Countless times I've seen multiple problems with Windows because of malware. As a result, people were asking me to fix a PC that was unusable because of problems with boot, problems with machine being unable to respond and stuff like this.
- 5 years ago I bought 2 laptops, very similar for me and my girlfriend (we use them now) but manufacturer provided only drivers for 32 bit systems. I've spent 2 days while looking for drivers from weird sources just to make her laptop run Windows (mine is Windows free, however there was a time that I had a Windows partition for university related stuff).
- Do you know a person that was using Windows and haven't seen BSOD (or it's newer form)? I've seen it on Windows XP, Vista, 7. I've seen newest form of BSOD on Windows 10. Windows crashes, that's a fact.
- On a PC that I used at previous work, Windows 10 had 2 issues, that were unfixable for me.
1) I had a Office 365 Business, which comes with One Drive for Business. Build in Windows 10 One Drive was crashing every 5 minutes. There was a hotfix that was fixing the issue until next update was installed. After any update issue started to appear once again.
2) Synaptics touchpad was crashing from time to time and was presenting alert about this information.

I have an impression, that I would be able to list issues for next hour. But to be fair - I have many issues on Ubuntu as well. But on Ubuntu I'm more productive and I do not rely on Microsoft.

I totally agree with you wojtek88, I've had number of problems on my Linux partitions also had them on Windows partitions. Problem solving is quite different but after you learn where to look for fixes and solutions you are great to go with Linux, also found that when you fix a problem once you're good to go untill you have to reinstall so you need to write down or bookmark solutions that work for you one time because it's likely that you will switch distros because that's what we Linux users love to do. I just hate it when people say that "Things just work out of the box and nothing ever crashes and there are no problems" on Windows or Mac... We all know that that is far from the truth...

We could all be listing our issues for hours here and we would not run out of them either for Windows or Linux but one thing is for sure... On Windows we have the experience Microsoft wants us to have and they do not even do it well (crashes, bugs...) and on Linux we depend on the community and ourselves. Microsoft on the Windows side is rather a problem than the company that provides support to their users... There was one time I've seen a question on Microsoft's official support site where a user had a hardware specific problem and first he didn't get the reply for them and later some Windows user wrote that it's due to the Microsoft's last update and suggested him to revert back to last update. He did that and things started working as they should and he thanked the user. Soon after that Microsoft staff replied with something like we are happy that with the help of community you were able to solve your problem and marked the topic as solved... How is the problem supposed to be solved if he just needed to revert updates that ruined their things??? And that was my point that Microsoft just wants marketshare and money, they don't really care about their individual users and provide close to no support by themselves...

And we don't need support like that, we're better off on our own! :)

not my point at all.

I'm saying the average user doesnt care about the OS or problem solving.
If my aunt buys a printer and it doesnt work on windows, she can return it to the shop. she will never start troubleshooting as she simply doesnt care.

And yes, you and I can get a wireless printer or external hdd's working just fine, my aunt cant and doesnt want to mess with it either.

Saying people will just need to do some trouble shooting doesnt make a lot of sense for the average user that doesnt care about his computer, the damned thing simply needs to work.

people dont do trouble shooting on windows, those same people wont do it on linux either.
No matter how many times someone on a forum types that they just need to learn how to solve the problems themselves.

And I never refered to windows as an OS that is problem free, its a horrendous piece of shit in my eyes and it drives me insane when I'm forced to use a windows machine.

That's my point ;)

I'm not bashing linux, I'm simply shining a light on a little something called *reality*

I agree on that part that aunt doesn't care whether she uses Windows or something else but if she needs her printer to work she needs someone who can troubleshoot for her and if any of my neighbours would come to me so I could troubleshoot their hardware I would be glad to suggest linux to them and even maintain the device for everything they need on it and also learn them the basics of linux troubleshooting, usually aunts like that use only google and some basic text editing :D and also trust me that aunt who needs her PC for those kinds of things don't need all of MS's advertising bull**** and bluescreens and viruses (because people click everywhere around the internet) so they are WAY better of with Linux for now. People also didn't care because they didn't know what kind of a spyware Win10 was but there are a lot of videos on youtube exposing this problematics and that is I believe the very reason why linux has been growing more than it ever has in the last year. I think that the trend will continue, there will be no such thing as "boom" in numbers of Linux users but I think that it will be growing faster than it did before the release of Win10 :) However we shall wait and see and hope for the best, to at least be considered as a real platform so companies like Adobe would provide full support for their users of CC who would probably love to use linux over Windows due to its pureness and openness, in fact there are a lot of people who dual boot Windows and Linux just because of a specific game (ex. LoL) or specific software (Adobe CC), though I have heard that LoL will provide Linux support eventually when they move their engine to vulkan! And Adobe has promised their users Adobe CC support but still has not done it... it will be probably done eventually as well...
