You must be the opposite of a distro-/DE-hopper :)

I was on Fedora for eight years (six as my primary operating system) and have been using Arch for nine years (seven with the same install). Started with GNOME 2 but switched to XFCE as it had better Zaphod Mode support than GNOME Shell. Everything else seems weird and scary to me. I imagine...

Seven years with one Arch install? I ... I'm speechless. Arch must be more stable than its reputation suggests. Maybe I should reconsider, I've been a Linux user since 2001 and have been avoiding Arch like the plague, I heard so many horror stories about broken systems and endless glitch-fixing. But I've been relatively enamored with openSUSE Tumbeleweed, which is somewhat similar in its release-model, I think.

Hehe, im not the only one. 9 years here on my Arch install
xpander@archlinux ~ $ grep -a -m1 filesystem /var/log/pacman.log
[2013-01-21 17:45] installed filesystem (2012.12-1)

Before that i had Ubuntu and Mint upgraded from 6.10 to 10.10 then repo changed to mint repositores from mint 11 to 14 without any reinstalls. that was 2007 till 2013

Most of my linux time its been Gnome2 or MATE, have run XFCE quite a bit also and a bit KDE and a little bit Cinnamon.

Hmmm, amazing. Did you have to do a lot of maintenance, like broken dependencies? I mean, Arch does have a bit of a reputation ... :) Nothing against Arch, it just comes with being on the bleeding edge, I guess.

Not really, there have been few package conflicts with AUR stuff that have been requiring manual intervention. But those are rare. There have been few cases during updates when manual intervention is needed also due to drastical package changes, but those have been documented on the home page. The install has survived 3 different motherboards without any issues. Cloned to new drives 2 times also.

Hmmm. Maybe I should give it a try on one of my laptops at least. Ah, could be a project for the holidays.

Some artwork from [Custom Battler Bomberman](https://bomberman.fandom.com/wiki/Bomberman_2) got cycled in as the latest background on my Entroware Orion i5 just now, so here's a screenshot. The game pinched a bunch of ideas from Capcom's [MegaMan Battle Network](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_Battle_Network), hence the Tron-like cyberspace aesthetic.

I've switched from Solus to Nobara in april, but I kept my GNOME setup more or less the same, bar some additional tweaks. I always use the unity-style layout on GNOME (top bar and the side panel).

Now that's an impressive amount of stuff in your Gnome dock! Tastes really do differ, Ubuntu's Unity-style layout always drives me nuts because the windows are always slightly to the bottom left, due to the dock and the header panel. I don't know why this irks me so, I guess it's because they're not centered.

A 4K screen let's you go absolutely nuts with what you put on that top bar. I recently discovered the KDE Plasma widget "Audio Device Switcher" and it's an absolute game-changer, particularly for me, regularly switching between my monitor speakers, headphones and bluetooth headset.

Love how smart it all looks - and love Dig Dug hanging out in your terminal there, too! How did you do that?

I've used this to make a random color script appear each time I open a new terminal / terminal instance. Not all of them are as nice as this one though, but it's still pretty cool to me.

Damn, this screenshot makes me wish I had a higher resolution display. It's glorious. How big is your display btw?

Unfortunately, even If I were to get a new PC / laptop and a new monitor, I'd go for a 27" 1440p 144/165hz display as 4k gaming imo is still too taxing with the more resource-hungry games out there (and I don't tend to upgrade my hardware too often).

As to switching audio, I use a GNOME extension to take care of that. I've installed various extensions that expand the tray menu a bit (add an audio input / output chooser, audio mixer, bluetooth quick connect - I use it to turn off my controller when I finish playing, GSconnect (KDE connect for GNOME) and buttons for accessing the GNOME tweaks and GNOME extensions apps).

It's 43". It was £499 when I bought it, but [it appears to have gone up in price](https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07CRW3V31/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1) since Jan 2021. I changed [the stand too](https://smile.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07YDLBP6D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) - makes a big difference to how it looks!
