Title: Steam Minigame
User Avatar
I have joined the GOL steam group and started bashing at the "high" threat level square in the middle of the bottom row of the "Surreal Wanderlust Planet". It is unlikely that the GOL group will take the square, but I thought I would try...

Anyone who wants to join is welcome.
User Avatar
Yeah. I thought I would try to do something on the edge somewhere, but it is probably a long shot.

There is a little helper posted part way down this reddit thread:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Steam/comments/8suoxd/that_is_what_we_were_waiting_for/

... as long as you don't mind having the javascript be automated for you (in the tradition of Gold Helm). It still needs a bit of babysitting, though.

Thanks for posting the picture! Maybe a few more people will show up and help :-)

I played manually up to level 5 and got bored. The script I linked to doesn't do much. It just kills the baddies as soon as they spawn. I still have to start each game manually.

The code in the reddit thread can be pasted into the javascript console in the browser after the game is loaded. I am using firefox (ctrl+shift+I then click on the "console" tab).

Other teams may have found a bigger shortcut. Not sure. I am not that worried about winning a square - just thought it would be worth a go for fun.

(edit for spelling)
User Avatar
Oh well. I don't think Steam cares that much. They will probably just change the game so regular people get a chance to play the basic thing.

I wouldn't run that first script since it will just put you in lockstep on the same square with the masses from the other teams. I will have to look at the second one.

Not worth getting too upset over, really.

The Gold Helm monster clicker game 3 years ago ended up just being a javascript battle. I have the wormhole badge for joining in that silliness. I think Valve didn't mind as long as "regular" people still got to play the basic game.

I tried your second script link. It seems to be more automated, but I can't be 100% sure that it is reloading the same square I started on. I may just leave it on overnight and check in the morning.

Thanks for the link.

Valve definitely won't be running out of planets!

Except there is almost no advantage to claiming squares. The chance to win the giveaway games is just from spending time on the planet. You don't even have to play the game, just let it idle at the selection screen!

Claiming squares is 100% useless bragging, like most of the other Steam minigames.

Steam even made a custom 100,000,000 point badge for the people who hacked the monster clicker game and maxed out the points.

Indeed. Some of the badges, obviously including the level 100.000.000 wormhole badge, were created specifically for those script battles since it was not possible to reach anything close to that by normal play.

edit: I should probably have read beyond that point first. :P

Though it would still be cool to get at least few tiles claimed for one of the Linux groups.

Funny thing about the monster minigame was that starting the game on right time you could end up one of the script heavy groups and as result get pretty high points. I didn't get maximum points though, I have just the 400,000+ badge.

Yeah. At one point yesterday our little efforts got us into second place on that square, but we have now been pushed completely off the list.

Other strategies may come clear over the next day or so, but it looks like our small numbers here won't make a dent. Maybe someone should make a post to r/linux_gaming.

I have now given up on trying to claim any square for GOL. The goal seems to be just to get enough XP to claim the level 6 badge.

Conjecture is that Steam may put some new higher-XP levels in the mix, but the auto-scripts are pretty much mandatory to get enough points right now. Personally, I have now switched to this script:

https://github.com/ensingm2/saliengame_idler

Some discussion here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Saliens/comments/8sywut/background_idler_no_minigame_ui_required_with/

Note - at the time of this writing, that script does not do anything "bad" but always be careful about pasting strange javascript into your browser.

I seem to have stumbled upon the secret of levelling up. I was curious about the boss level and let the script run to see one appear. Then played the boss level manually. I went two rounds through about half the boss health and earned about 350.000 points. Something that the script doesn't appear to do by itself. Not the SteamDB one anyway.

The author of the script I linked to is away on holiday and so hasn't updated it for the bosses. I switched over to xPaw's PHP script which works well, but takes more setup.

Got my 6th badge now, so I am happy.

I played a single battle on most planets for the chance to win a free game (didn't win of course). I actually happened upon three or four of those boss fights just by checking in a few times a day to see if there are new planets. I'm not sure if the other players were bots or if every player just got a different view of the battle.

I got my badge without scripts, real effort there.:P
Well done. You have more patience than me.

Interesting that they let the last planet go overtime so that we were able to clear them all.

Edit: I was hoping for 100m XP again but 67,949,541 will do just fine.

Quoting: chancho_zombiethe boss is going down man. I was the only none bot, I can tell because I was throwing bombs and other weapons other than the salien special.
I'm not so sure the those attacks were the actual attacks from other players. I played a couple of boss fights and never saw a special attack that wasn't mine. No proof though. From what I understand from the commit logs, the boss fights gave you 2400 XP per second and they made the scripts do as little damage as possible in order to actually make the boss fights longer.

Browsing the Steam store and opening / viewing the discovery queue was irritatingly slow for me, throughout the Summer Sale - Particularly during the start and the end (i.e. over the last 24 hours). I did play the Salien game a number of times (to Level 6) but didn't win anything either - other than Intergalactic Trade Cards (which was okay).

During the last 24 hours, I decided to revisit what was on sale before it was all over (not helped by the speed). And, pleased to say - I bought 12 Linux games on sale, including Vikings: Wolves of Midgard, Expeditions: Conquistador, Before The Echo, Run or Die, Crypt of the Necrodancer Amplified DLC. Go Linux!!!
