Here's a question i have after 4 beers on a Friday evening.
What are the benefits of Sparc64 vs amd64/x86 ?
What processes/operations does it give a benefit on ?
Also is there a consumer grade version - or is there no point since it is ultra specialized for super computers.

If you can slap a GPU into a PCIe bus, then there isn't much that you couldn't also do on x86 (assuming the code is freely available. For proprietary programs, you're SoL.)

There are no FOSS drivers for recent GPUs really. I'd say today it's just a fun architecture to poke at, but there are no practical benefits. Also, since Sun's demise, I don't think anyone is working on it.
