The point is to protect your data, like your IP (which GDPR classes as personal data), which as far as I know is required for stuff like GDPR. It's a bit of a minefield but regardless, it seemed like a good idea to implement. Some media hosts might set cookies, store your IP etc so it just seems like a good sane idea to initially hide external media in posts from users and let people decide if they wish to see it.
