Now, theoretically it would have been possible with donations alone, but without a big company like Valve, it would be unlikely for Linux gaming to be seen as competitive or viable to support. That's also why it's important for Valve to stay independent.
Moreover, breaking the ice by releasing gaming hardware with Linux out of the box is a risky move only companies as large as Valve were able to afford, and get the desired recognition.
