Micro Machines World Series is being ported to Linux by Virtual Programming

Should "VP" and "port" be in the same sentence ?

Would "VP is doing the wine wrapper for .... " be more apt :P

This looks like it would be a great game that would be for kids and younger teens. I have said it before but Linux really needs games for your kids as much as big AAA games.

Wine Staging 2.9 released with improved support for anti-cheat and DRM
By Comandante Ñoñardo, 1 June 2017 at 7:05 pm UTC

Do Fallout 3 and Fallout: New vegas work fine with Wine?

I ask that because they were just released on GOG.

Does anyone know if any anticheat/DRM systems actually function in Wine now, and if so which? If we can identify any particular middleware solutions, then it'll be easy to make a list of "these use now-working anticheat/DRM and should be tested again and appDB updated" games/apps.

Quoting: razing32Are these actual ports ?
Did someone do any work on these or is this just a rom + emulator ?

rom + emulator (+ 4 avatar images in Metal Slug X)

The BIOS is not compatible with newer MAMEs, but the games are OK (the Metal Slugs at least). I was looking for a way to force start MAME with the GOG BIOS, but couldn't find it yet.

Quoting: natewardawgAwesome news!

I bought the Witcher 2 back when it first came out on Linux and the performance was pretty dreadful so I stopped playing it. I started playing it again just last night and it has improved sooo much to the point that I don't notice any issues. I've played most of the other VP ports as well (Spec Ops, DiRT Showdown, Saints Row IV, etc) and they have gotten their eOn technology to work super well. Until I went and looked just now, I completely forgot they ported the Saints Row games even though I played SR IV for about 35 hours. It seems like it's been a while since we got any big news from VP, so I'm happy these guys are still making ports for Linux! :)

They have also done Overlord I and II, Arma: Cold War Assault and Putty Squad recently. They did have a little bit of a lull after Overlord but they are definitely still getting ports out. It seemed like they were just doing small titles recently so I take this game as a good sign. Hopefully they have some other big name games in the works that they are just being quite about.

Yay! I was hoping to see Toybox Turbos at some stage because I have a bit of a thing for colourful, arcade racing games (Re-Volt is one of my all time favourites), but to have an actual Micro Machines game native on Linux is fantastic.

Very happy to hear this. Not because of the game itself, but because this means that VP is still in business.
Say what you want about VP's tech, but we got some awesome games because of them.

Update on the release date: The release date is a bit confusing, since their tweet says the 23rd, but Steam and their own store Deliver2 say the 20th. I'm waiting to hear back on what date is correct.

Wasn't there some other Top-Down Racer confirmed recently? Sadly, I'm really bad with this kind of games :(

Thx for sharing. It's pretty interesting. The both team managed to get better perf, while still being at the beginning of mastering this Technology. It seems to be a very sophisticated API, so it's all good for the future of gaming. Looking forward to the next games and port using it.

I happened to have tried the demo yesterday - yes, there's a demo available, also for Linux!

Unfortunately, I didn't get into it. The small but irritating graphical glitches (on Nvidia) probably played a role in this. Maybe I'll give it a second shot later...

Quoting: Andrei B.Wow, 7nm.. Impressive.
Ten years ago we thought that 23nm was the physical limit.

I don't remember that. I for many years now remember the physical limit be considered around 5 nm (and it is getting there now as it seems). Moore's Law also considered to be halted in 2010s. 7nm is really impressive but not too unrealistic. Intel had stopped at 14nm for a some time now and either intel wanted Amd to catch up or already is getting proportionally way more difficult. Of course now I believe we Moore's Law is near the end and will not be continued in 2020s as already have happened for many years now with frequencies. In any case 1nm is very near the atomic scale.

I don't think it's gonna go that far down. The problem is that even if you make the transistors that small, you're gonna have a lot of problems with the supporting infrastructure, especially the power supply and heat dissipation.

What will probably happen is the switch to optronic circuits and quad bits or octa bits.

Quoting: zimplex1I enjoy piracy quite a bit, but to each their own. However with old retro games like these and others, I really don't consider it piracy at all. I mean most of these games the developers/publishers are either dead or have moved on to the point that they don't do anything with or care about those IP anymore.

Refer to the rules. There will be no more talk about how much you enjoy piracy, consider this a warning. This is a legal way of obtaining games that are no longer in physical form and if you don't agree, well, tough but your entitlement has no place here.

Quoting: sigmichYou could also download modern games, sofware, movies and music for free from internet. But it doesn't mean it is good. I don't like piracy.

Quoting: muntdefemsYou probably already know that, but the Windows installers are created with Inno Setup so they can all be extracted with innoextract. It'd be a little redundant to offer the assets separately in a zipfile.
Surely if all I want is the raw assets though then it is the rest of the installer that becomes redundant?

I wonder why is it THESE set of games were released and not others? Because all of the NeoGeo arcade games work on Linux, Mac and Windows via emulator. The 2x they were on HB and now on GOG....Why these specific games and not the others?

Quoting: bingusHmm. I really enjoyed Bastion, Transistor a bit less so. This doesn't really appeal to me at all though - and party RPGs are my bread and butter. I dunno what it is exactly, maybe the art style?
To be honest it doesn't look like it plays like a party-based RPG either. Sure you have three characters + yourself driving the story, but you can only control one character at a time during "combat" as far as I've seen. It looks more like an arcade and point & click crossover to me.

Quoting: GuestInteresting, at the 29:11 mark in the Feral Interactive presentation: GRID is going to be ported to Android on Vulkan, so maybe we'll see the same on Linux?

My favorite part is starting just a few seconds before that at about 28:54 where they said (not shockingly) they plan to start using Vulkan for pretty much all of their Linux ports. He does say under his breath, "some maybe not", but that's understandable depending on the game.

Quoting: elmapul.Especially because its a dead system that you cannot buy new anymore.

you cant buy the hardware but you can buy the games

yes you can but i can still also download the rom for free and play it on linux today and nobody is going to kick down my door because of it. I get what you are saying support the porting to linux by buying x title etc but on this occasion i fail to see the point. Whoever holds the rights now to snk games is not the original snk as they went out of business in the late 90's.

Feral never ceases to amaze me. the community teamwork effort they are doing to help Mesa along with Vulkan will be the key for Linux going forward. it looks like Feral may be able to push out more ports soon because of how effective they seem to be from all the Vulkan work. I can't wait to see how GRID autosport performs on android.

the next couple of years for Linux gaming will very exciting :)
