Humble 2K Bundle 2 has a few big Linux games for cheaps

Quoting: TheGZeusOk, I hear Spec-Ops: The Line has an amazing story, but "passable" gameplay.
As I _already know the story_ (every critic raving about it for years) is it worth getting?
I know it's only a dollar (I've already played The Pre-Sequel and I'm rubbish at Civ), but... it's my dollar.

those 3 games are a steal for 1$

Yeah, 2K aren't exactly known for DRM-free releases. I'm still waiting for Bioshock games to come out on GOG. Too bad, since I've heard that Bioshock Infinite is a decent game (and Linux version performs well).

I asked them about it here, but they didn't bother replying.

Linux demo of the System Shock remake is now available on GOG

Nice! I won't be able to run it, but that's not why I backed it. I backed it because the game deserves it.

OpenTomb is an open source game engine for Tomb Raider 1-5
By m2mg2, 20 July 2016 at 2:51 pm UTC

Tomb raider 1 runs really well with patched dosbox/openglide. I can't play it fullscreen though because the interaction between the standard dosbox window and the openglide window is very clunky. Would be awesome if someone updated openglide to resolve some it's issues. It makes dosbox so much more enjoyable.

Does the patch make the game _fun_?

My impression is that Virtual Programming is a much smaller company than Feral is. Therefore the amount of games they can port is smaller. Who knows how long their todo list is?

Anyway, their ports often have less performance issues and lot less AMD incompatibilities than Feral their ports, so I look forward to this.

Quoting: PicoboomComments like these boost my spirits far more than any single dev complaining about how "hard" or "complicated" it is for them to release a Linux version of a game. I just want to point to people like TynanSylvester and say, "See? He didn't have a problem creating a port! What's your excuse?"

I point at Undertale. Once Toby finally decided to make Linux a priority, it only took a few days. And that's one dev who isn't even a programmer.

Quoting: X6205Uhm... so unknown game i have never heard off gets a linux release. But users bitching abou Witcher 1 for linux are ignored. Even if VP alredy have Witcher1 eOn port on Mac.. Maybe if they would cooperate with CDR and include also community mods like Rise of the White Wolf or HD texturen mod, it would sell 10 times more than some unknown Overlord 1+2.. but okay. Let´s not be greatefull..

And what about Aspyr or Feral porting their best Mac titles to linux? Titles like Deus Ex:HRDC, Rage, Broderlands 1 or Batman games? Maybe Bioshock 1+2 or KOTOR1? Again nothing.. Not to mention a fact that Mac is a joke platform to port games for. How many mac users actually have top end mac with decent mobile GPU? Less than all linux users.. but let´s not sound frustrating or pissed.. No way. I am sure Aspyr/Feral know better. Of course also VP knows what we don´t know..

I don't think the porters have much choice about what they port, at least they can't do one unless the content owners ask (or agree to let them). Overlord is a Codemasters game and Codemasters seems to have become pretty Linux friendly.

Getting the GOG version of a game is always the best way for these types of workarounds as they are DRM free and you can easily download the .exe as-is for your GOG account. No Steam run times or extra stuff added to the executable.

I think the same. Witcher 1 would be genial on Linux. I don't have idea if porting games to mac are similar to porting to Linux, but probably the work is half done.

I would like to encourage developers to bring mac ports to Linux .There are a lot of good games in the mac catalog that linux users would like to play/buy .

What do you think, VirtualPrograming/Aspyr/Feral?

That's a really good bit of feedback, I will add it to my gitlab tracker to implement a way to do this. Should be really easy to do.

Playing advocate here, on the flip side although the honesty is appreciated, im not sure just pressing a button and uploading to SteamDB is the way linux ports should go forward. I have seen this echoed on the steam forums where almost always the dev has never touched linux, which might sound great because Unity is doing it's job but then it also means the game was never tested on the platform and the devs over time don't become accustomed to the linux desktop. Basically it could keep good devs locked into the Windows platform for many years longer.

Quoting: dubigrasuInteresting, I suppose it works with any version of the game (Steam/GOG)?

Edit: OK, I found that is better to use the GOG version:
QuoteIf you don't own Daikatana already, the recommended way to obtain it is on GOG.com, especially when you're not using Windows.

Interesting information, dubibrasu, but recommended by whom exactly? Would you (or anyone else) provide a link to your GoG quote, please. I'm wondering at what the rationale behind the quoted recommendation was. Was it a matter of hardware? DRM conflict? Or authorial ethics?

Otherwise, this sounds like it's easily worth a few bucks, provided the kinks have been worked out. I'll wait on the patch's release, though.

Thanks
Ah, sorry.
It was mentioned in the installation guide:
https://bitbucket.org/daikatana13/daikatana/wiki/Installation

If you get the game from Steam you'll have to download it with Windows (Wine) or steamcmd, whereas from GOG you can just direct download it. I suppose that's why GOG is recommended.
Other than that is exactly the same thing.
