A very special livestream tonight, keyboard and mouse vs Steam Controller

How the fuck is it clickbait exactly?

Just sounds like "tiger and rabbit fight to the death".

I know I mostly went back to keyboard/mouse for FPS games, but now that I think about it, I should try it with the gyro. With the exception of aiming, I would rather sit back and use the gamepad.

Quoting: BonsI am getting more and more the feeling that the porting of new games to Linux is getting slower and slower. And more ports are getting canceled.
In this phase how its now going, i am little concerned that the Steam Machines ever will succeed.

I really don't understand the origin of this Fear, Uncertainty or Doubt. I thought Syber selling out their Steam Machines was a huge success and having over ~1,500 games on SteamOS & Linux on Launch too.

SteamOS is about Valve controlling their own future and not having to live in the Microsoft House or Apple House and follow their rules. With SteamOS, Valve has the leverage to secure their future from 3rd parties demanding a part of their pie because they see them doing well.

Also, any devs that were ramping up for Steam Machine's Launch have already launched, a cooldown seems in order before we get to a steady stream again as the most gun-ho devs already released their games.

Also, even if Valve personally financed or gave a special discount to Game Devs on their cut they could easily throw their weight around to get devs to adopt their platform.

Once gamers are entrenched in this new Steam Ecosystem there is no going back, there are may reasons why Steam Machines are superior to Gaming Consoles - if you ask I'll post my biga5s list.

Also, games developed with Linux in mind from Day 1 perform equal or better on SteamOS - Ark for example does much better on Linux than on Windows 7 imo on the same hardware.

Have steam controller, can confirm - getting used to FPS on it is very difficult.

Non precision games though? Works well.

I would love if it they made a version where the trackpads could unscrew and you could screw in joysticks or some other mod.

Valve has said they hope people will Mod their Controller - I'm not sure what they means.

Quoting: edoI saw a guy being the best in a csgo match with the sc, so I don't expect anything less from you lol.
He's had a lot more practice with it, and he spent a lot of time configuring the settings to how he liked and had a decent config for himself. A lot of the part of the stream I saw was spent configuring and tweaking the controller settings, so it's definitely not even remotely to a fair comparison - between Liam and the CSGO dude, or between the Steam Controller and KBM.

Quoting: omer666When you know that the vast majority of them wouldn't even spot the difference between the port and the original without an FPS counter...

Except for all people with lower and or older hardware. Why are all deniers acting like everybody has a 970 or better GPU. I've a pair of 290x - trust me, I notice the performance difference quite well. I'm pretty sure anybody with a 2 gig 960 would be like WTF when his game starts running at 40 instead of 60+ frames.

I obviously can't speak for the "vast majority", but I have a 970, and I notice the difference too. When a game should be able to get a steady 60+ FPS and it's dipping into the 40s, I definitely notice. I don't get why we shouldn't hold developers to high standards just because we're using Linux. That's a like a beautiful desperate woman settling for an old drunk guy who hits her because she's so afraid he'll leave. She deserves better, and so do we. ^_^

I just received the controller last friday. It works, but you need practice, I didn't achieve be as fast as with keyboard+mouse, but I'm sure it can be done with practice.

Quoting: Crazy PenguinTo late! I wonder what took them so long.

You can ask developers. It's always a delay on their side. The usual reason - they treat GOG as an afterthought. In other words, Steam monoculture is still strong. But situation is gradually improving.

Some thoughts on Xenonauts the XCOM inspired strategy game, now it’s native on Linux
By Zelox, 29 November 2015 at 8:04 pm UTC

This game is really good. Better then xcom in my opinion. Mostly cause I like the art style more and it feels a little bit harder then xcom. but to be fair, both of them runs great in linux.

Does Samsai have a Steam Controller as well?

For the sake of comparison it would be great if you can swap places after a while in order to disambiguate whether the Steam Controller is better/worse than the mouse+keyboard or just one of you is plainly better than the other :P

It's running on Unreal Engine 3, and the current state of that engine on Linux is a hodgepodge of third-party hacks rather than a true port. My hope is that the extra time they're taking is to whip the engine into shape and optimize it for Linux.

I was just playing L4D with a controller. It was doable, up until the finale, then I had to switch to K&M. My overall accuracy was 30%. It's usually 60-70%. :(

I think I was improving towards the end. It takes a bit of getting used to holding your finger still and using the gyro for precision aiming.

Quoting: BonsI am getting more and more the feeling that the porting of new games to Linux is getting slower and slower.
and more ports are getting canceled.

...and at the same time port quality is becoming a more important concern for both developers and users. We know some ports that were completely unplayable at launch, but now Linux users are paying more attention to performance and framerate than ever before. It is also true for reviewers, who keep looking at raw performance as an indicator of the potential interest of SteamOS, even if it is far from being meaningful to the end user.

Thus, extensively testing a game for an emerging market means it takes much more time to port and test it, and it could explain why it is taking developers quite more time to port games as the target audience is getting more and more difficult to satisfy. Honestly, on another site I won't name (cough cough) I saw countless negative reactions to the Linux port of Alien Isolation, stating Feral was doing an awful optimisation job, framerate was not good enough compared to Windows, bla bla bla. When you know that the vast majority of them wouldn't even spot the difference between the port and the original without an FPS counter...

Quoting: BonsWhat to you guys think?,If you see this from a average consumer perspective for once, and don´t look with you Linux glasses on.

3 Reasons Steam Machines are better than Sony and MS consoles and 1 day someone will remind "average consumers" they at least have a choice now (which is better than no choice)! [...]
Precisely. I think everyone has to remember to see the bigger picture here. This is much less about Windows vs SteamOS/Linux and much more about getting rid of proprietary console platforms and exclusives and levelling the playing field for the consumer; meaning (in the future) if a game comes out, it comes out for your "PC" and for your SteamOS console, no more vendor lock-in and, hopefully when Vulcan arrives, no more bad "console ports" (like the latest Batman).
