Actually, bought it and I haven't seen any visual bugs yet, except on my Intel HD4000 but that was fixed by updating to latest oibaf ppa (mesa 10.3). Also tried it on an Nvidia GTX660, worked fine.

From the developer:

BTW, I'm fairly sure we're the only Linux/Mac game made on Unity that properly supports Xbox 360 gamepads, including vibration. Why I'm so sure? Because Unity sucks at gamepad input and we had to code all gamepad input ourselves, and make it work on Linux and Mac.
this swayed me to buy the game. If there are bugs initially I'll just patiently wait for the updates!

SteamOS Update 126 Pushed To Alchemist Beta
1 Aug 2014 at 3:07 pm UTC

I've experienced that SteamOS has no tearing, compared to miscellaneous tearing on regular Ubuntu like you describe, although I've only used the steamos-session. SteamOS-session doesn't manage logging in and out and switching logins particularly well though, I experienced quite a few hangs and reboots. However once you're in SteamOS-session, everything works fine.
