Valve may be working on a new kind of Steam Machine
6 Dec 2024 at 4:15 pm UTC Likes: 4

Valve proved they can create a console like experience on handhelds.
They can do it for sure now on stationary consoles too.

I guess it will be a custom machine probably with the rumored Strix Halo APU.

Then also, there's the rumor about the new Steam Controller. That fits perfectly into the picture.

I really look forward to it. I don't think they can compete with Sony or Nintendo in terms of numbers, but it doesn't need to have numbers as high as those to make it a success.

Edit:
What makes it a success compared to creating your own HTPC:
1. Standardized hardware, meaning, game creators can create custom profiles like they do for the steam deck.
2. You don't have to build it yourself
3. Probably competitive pricing
4. Perfect support for things like CEC and bluetooth wake up. Turning on the steam controller turns on the console and the TV.

It's possible to achieve those things with building a HTPC yourself, but it's way harder to get it to the comfort level of like a Playstation. Things like CEC usually don't even work on normal AMD and Nvidia GPUs.

Quoting: JarmerVR device maybe, but I doubt it. Smartwatch no chance.

I think @cato-the-younger is right ... They want SD2 to be on arm. Battery will last 2x - 5x longer, fans will sound less like a jet engine, and performance will either be on-par or even better than x86. It's really a no-brainer for a mobile device to get off x86 at all costs.
After the Lunar Lake launch I think this is not true anymore. It looks like the ISA doesn't matter that much for power efficiency.

But, I also think they prepare an ARM device in the background.

Frog Protocols announced to try and speed up Wayland protocol development

Quoting: Xpander-Global hotkey support
-Copy-paste between wayland and xwayland that doesn't break
-Drag and drop between applications is finnicky and not always working
-Window management with positions, geometry etc are lacking features.
I was thinking I'm the only one experiencing those. Especially drag and drop and copy and paste is one of the things not working reliably. Sometimes drag and drop even freezes the application and I have to kill it. It's hard to know wether it's an application specific problem a Wayland protocol implementation problem (I'm using Plasma) or a problem from the protocol itself.
All I know is, those things worked reliably on X11 and they don't work reliably now.

On my gaming system I don't encounter those problems, but while working I encounter them almost on a daily basis.

Due to scaling working way better on Plasma Wayland than Plasma X11 I kind of have to live with these problems.

I'm so far behind on FINAL FANTASY it's crazy at this point.
It doesn't matter. They are not related to each other. Just pick one, that appeals to you if you are into those games.
Personally I played FF XVI on PS5. It's a good game but for me personally behind every most older FF games I played so far.
My preference so far: X > IX > VII > VI > XVI > I > II
Are they not related at all? If I never played any, I don't have to play I, II, III or whatever, and I can just pick up whichever one I happen to own?
Yes. They have some recurring elements. But the storys don't relate to each other and the games are quite different to each other. Only within the numbers they are related. Like X-2 or the different XIII.

Personally I think X is the best of them all and I think it's also the best to recommend. It IMHO still feels modern. While those below X are very nice games as well, but are maybe bit outdated from a gameplay perspective for some people.

Quoting: elmapuli mean, why an steamdeck?
Because they'd look pretty stupid pushing the ROG Ally and its notorious problems and poor aftersales support, I guess.
And the Steam Deck has the Steam Client preinstalled on which they sell their games.

I usually don't buy anymore before I have time to actually play them, but in this case I will make an exception.

Linux user share on Steam breaks 2% thanks to Steam Deck

I think another reason is Windows 11 sucks IMHO.
When looking through tech forums I feel like more people are interested in trying Linux.
But sure, Steam Deck is the biggest growth factor.

Riot Games talk Vanguard anti-cheat for League of Legends and why it's a no for Linux

Client side anti cheat will never work. I don't get why no one tries server side cheat detection. I think AI in server side cheat detection might be a very useful thing.
