Ah I see it's not properly "out" yet, still in Early Access.
Oh well, then there's hope for a more polished experience once it's out of beta and ready for launch. :)

How is the performance of ARK these days? I recall it was pretty bad around launch?

I think it is so sad that there exist programmers who make errors like these. Case sensitivity is the rule in ALL programming languages (of relevance, at least) , it should be in their blood to name files with that same precision, regardless if they write for a case insensitive file system or not.
