Quoting: TheSHEEEPdifferent threading libs per platform. That might be a more obvious example, where one library functions in a way that makes a possible deadlock in your code occur more often on that platform, so finding that bug earlier helps tremendously.
Absolutely more obvious, but like I say how can a library-specific bug really help on other platforms, where other libraries are used for that same function where a particular issue is not present?

Admittedly I've only got experience from higher level languages, and will totally accept that is the reason for my lack of comprehension. :)

I don't understand how different compilers can expose different bugs in the same(?) code. I mean, a bug is a bug isn't it? Or is it because the use of different libraries expose bugs caused by those particular libraries/APIs? If so, how will the code run smoother on a different set of libraries if the bug is related to that other library?

I don't get this?

I'd feel slightly embarrassed when a generic wrapper did a better job at "porting" my code than what I was able to do myself.

Not totally fair, I know, but still. It's a generic application, a translator, nothing custom to make it work at all.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyHang on, though--it's the same problem you'd have under Windows, and the same workaround you'd have to use in Windows. How can something whose behaviour is identical to the Windows version not be platinum?
ahhh sorry, I totally misunderstood that post.
Thanks for the correction. :)

Quoting: x_wingMany games that works flawlessly with proton are reported as just "gold" or "silver"][...] the game works flawlessly after running the windows workaround .
That's not flawless, that's "working after applying workarounds", that's gold or even silver.

See, that's the problem with those reports, claims of platinum status, claimed by experienced wine users. That's what leads to disappointment after disappointment by newbies who can't even get to the main menu screen before something shitty happens.
This is in fact why wine is given up by so many, myself included.

On top of my wishlist from Valve is that they break the news with a ETA on their VR set. Simply cause I then know it will be well supported for Linux from day one.
