I just have a very strong suspicion that a lot of those who today use fat32 just use it out of old habit to transfer/share files between two relatively new OSes.

Quoting: slaapliedjeIf you have a museum of various devices all over the house ;) , it makes sense to use a very old file system as the common denominator.Quoting: BeamboomWhy not use ntfs? When you own a Linux, Mac and Windows machines, plus various old computers with USB ports running outdated operating systems like OS/2... Fat32 is still the most universally supported filesystem next to FAT16/FAT12 (which of course has a lot more limitations in partition sizes etc.)

Quoting: ZlopezNot working everywhere, some devices can't read ntfs partitions. What's your use case for the need of a file that can be read absolutely everywhere?

lol - okieeeessss... Reading that "troubleshooting" I sense the smell of yet another poor "port".
They should rather just say, "if it doesn't work then run it under Proton".
But I don't blame them. This is the reality in this. Until we have a *significantly* higher market share, these are the level of the "ports" we should expect. Those who are so against Proton and insist on "native or nothing" - this is the reality you advocate for.

Linux user share on Steam hits second highest percentage in years

Either way my stance on the subject is "so what?". As long as the games run as they should what does it really matter. The Windows ports we've seen so far has generally speaking not been that much to cheer for, technically speaking. There was a time when we were happy they worked at all, but those days are behind us.
We can start speaking of a significant move towards native builds if/when Linux gets to a significant market share. If we talk about 15-20% market share, then things might start to happen.
Until then:
Thank the gods for Proton. Without it, we'd be left with a myriad of small indie games and that's about it.

Quoting: Zlopez[..]it will probably help in the long term to native gaming as well. If the developers will see that the Linux gaming share is rising they will start doing the native ports instead of relying on Proton.... Or not if they don't have to, as there's a huge benefit from not having to maintain an additional OS branch of the source code.

I think it's odd that they didn't just make a sequel instead. But then again "odd" is a core value of this game, so... :D
It must be bought.

Erik Wolpaw to Valve on Portal 3 — 'we should just do it'

For a lot of other developers a guaranteed sale in the millions is a nobrainer, especially for a relatively small game like this (technically speaking). But not for Valve, for the mentioned reasons.

Quoting: subWhile it seems to be big money, it's actually significantly less compared to Steam salesWell, that was sort of my entire point. :)

Imagine sitting on a *guaranteed* multi million seller game franchise and choose NOT to release a sequel.
And they even have several of those. They're livin' the good life over there at Valve.

It is of course too early to declare so - remember the momentum around the Steam Machine/SteamOS back in the days, that died out pretty damn fast. But I do hear you, the potential is most definitely there. If this won't do it then what will, really.
For me though, the massive milestone on the timeline will forever be when the Steam client arrived for Linux. That was *the* snowball for all the rest to follow.
