Portal 2 from Valve gets a big update with Vulkan support from DXVK
19 Feb 2021 at 3:00 pm UTC

Quoting: JuliusMaybe the Stadia servers only support Vulkan and the recent announcement of Google signifies some sort of deal being struck with Valve? *pure speculation*
That would be golden, like geforce now, but on Linux with valve catalogue, one of the best combinations for us.

Quoting: robvvI'm assuming that the cries for GOG support for M:E in this forum and /r/linux_gaming are due to the massive investment that CD Projekt has made in Linux libraries and gaming over the last few years..?

Valve are going to have to work hard to keep up!
I agree that gog, while it is nice they encourage drm less games, are not so much our friend. Still waiting on Galaxy launcher... I can't really get why people would not like valve, they are a very very big contributor now, and they are very precious to us.

Is the same as people constantly criticizing proton initiative, when it solves the chick-egg issues in many ways. Before Proton, when I managed to drive a colleague/friend to use Linux I'd say that easily two third would go back partially or totally to windows in the month, now on the last batch of people I converted, it seems they are much more firmly rooted to pure Linux (no dual boot or vga passthrough) - at least for gaming (been a few months for the last few guys). Overall, migrating people to Linux has become easier thx to Valve. Of course they are not the only to thank, but they contributed a lot over the last few years.
GoG on the other hand, I still wait to see anything from them (and same from Epic btw).

Quoting: dpanterLinux support for the original game is great of course... but the way that press release reads, ME:Enhanced for PC sure seems to be Windows only.
Yeah I understand it the same way as you do ... I hope we are proven wrong.

What have you been playing recently? Come chit-chat with us

A mix of Tales of Symphonia, 嗜血印 Bloody Spell a chinese souls/DMC mix which runs quite well on proton and Death Stranding, and trying to platinum Nier Automata on the side. Also trying to find the time to finish Atelier Ryza but got a bit tired before the end, probably will come back to it later.

Terraria for Stadia cancelled, due to Google locking the developer out

It's a shocking reminder that many of us (myself included) rely too heavily one on single provider for multiple things. Personally, I have begun moving from Gmail wherever possible to ProtonMail and might I suggest you try it too. The trouble with Google is they are almost everywhere, I couldn't imagine losing so much and never getting an answer.
I can suggest also Nextcloud (self hosted on a rpi or with a provider from https://nextcloud.com/signup/ [External Link] official website). For search, qwant https://www.qwant.com/ [External Link] or duckduck go. As for phone, you can already turn off most apps, and if you have a flashable phone, https://lineage.microg.org/ [External Link] lineage with microg is google free but can run even proprietary apps.

OpenGL on top of Vulkan with Zink to work with NVIDIA drivers on Linux
4 Feb 2021 at 9:16 pm UTC Likes: 1

Quoting: BielFPsThe one think I still don't know about Zink:

When DEs finally start to migrate from Opengl to Vulkan, Would I be able to use Zink to translate the Vulkan calls to Opengl on unsupported Vulkan computers?

Or to use Zink I must have a processor with Vulkan support?
You will need to have Vulkan support. Zink goes from OpenGL to vulkan. Doing Vulkan over OpenGL would be a total nightmare (not even sure it would be practically possible).

The point here is that when in a not so distant future vulkan is ubiquitous, and opengl begin being dropped, new hw can just support legacy sw with zink. Also, even for current hw, pure gigantic OpenGL drivers are likely to suffer from bitrot as time pass... Less testing, means slowly regressions will creep up unnoticed. So Zink will takeover for legacy sw when it becomes really necessary.
I am actually positively surprised this issue is taken care of now, while we have good reference drivers, so before it is too late to do it right.
Also, for some embedded targets like rpi4, and rpi5 when it will follow, this will probably allow much better OpenGL support, since OpenGL driver never was so great ... And Vulkan driver is wayyyy simpler to do.

TUXEDO announce the InfinityBook S 15 with Intel Xe

I don't think this one is soldered ? I agree though that it is time to let go of the 8GB default.

TUXEDO announce the InfinityBook S 15 with Intel Xe

This new system actually sounds very familiar, and if you're feeling a bit of déjà vu you would be absolutely right - you've pretty much seen this before with the System76 Darter Pro. In fact, they're mostly the same. The main advantage is probably shipping, since System76 are based in the USA with TUXEDO in Germany and also support times / returns depending on where you are.
I just really hope they could work together. Get the firmware etc. I see Tuxedo are trying to hire a coreboot engineer too. But why redevelop the same thing again.
Tuxedo is the goto for Europe as it is, and I guess from North America you are bound to system76. So no real concurrence, might as well cast your lot together I'd say. Better for consumer too :)

Also, it seems Tuxedo/System76 are dancing around my dream laptop but never get there >< I would have like it so much with the casing of the pulse 15 ... Lighter and I prefer the feel of the magnesium for some reason, some kind of fetish I guess.

Bytten Studio say not to sleep on Linux in their postmortem for Lenna's Inception

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI read the bit about no longer supporting Mac, and why. Honestly, the MacOS people really are doing their best to make gaming (and quite a bit of other third party software) suck, aren't they?
For some time now the ranking in terms of how well you can game on (desktop OS) has tracked market share, like 1. Windows, 2. MacOS, 3. Linux. Before Valve got involved, it was a steep difference from MacOS to Linux, we just barely had any games. Then for a while it was a much less steep difference, due to Linux improving both in game availability and in stuff like driver support and whatnot.
But now I think we're entering a time when, purely due to the Mac people perforating their feet multiple times, it's going to be 1. Windows, 2. Linux, 3. MacOS. Like honestly, if a Mac user wants to game they'll be better off dual-booting to Linux.
Actually, the move to ARM will only make things worst. Supporting multi architecture when game engines often have a JIT is not fully trivial either (some probably already have some mobile/arm support though).
And with arm switch, kiss goodbye to proper dual booting... Also, system level cross ISA emulation is another game than process level emulation, you need to properly emulate the target arch, and you have the overhead of emulating devices for the target OS. So don't expect awesome performances out of an emulated x86 Linux either, graphics accel is also limited for those scenarios... So yeah, Mac for gaming probably will reduce more than anything, unless apple can make ipad and mac converge fully on that point. Maybe then they can have a chance to keep devs.
