KDE Plasma 5.25 Beta is out now for testing

Quoting: dr_jekyll2. I call it a structural flaw, because as one user pointed out, rsync works much faster and smoother without freezing the desktop etc. (I tested it multiple times myself).
The bug also notes that comparing the rsync or cp is a waste of time, because the KIO helpers that perform the action in KDE are multi-purpose and have to work consistently across local filesystems, SMB, NFS, FTP, SSH, WebDav and everything else. So yes, I'd like it to be faster. But no, it's not a structural flaw. It's actually a very cool design that just performs poorly in certain edge cases.

As for the rest of your comments, we'll just agree to differ. The KDE priorities will never please everyone, of course, but I much prefer their decisions, approach and transparency compared to, say, Gnome.
Well I disagree. I think it is a lame excuse and does not have anything to do with compatibility for other protocols etc.
Especially the freezing of the desktop is an absolut no-go and shows that something is clearly wrong.
Processes seem to be not seperated (enough) and somehow the parts of the framework that are responsible for "reading and displaying" the filesystem also seem to have problems to deal (even) with (external) file copy processes etc.
So there is work to do.

Otherwise we can of course agree to disagree, as it is also a pointless discussion, because no one from KDE will change their way because of these comments.

I'd like certain stuff to be a bit faster, but I wouldn't call that a structural flaw - even the original reporter of that bug noted that his use case (that of millions of small files in tens of thousands of directories) is an edge case. Nice to see Nate Graham commenting on it though.
1. The "bug" also occurs in much smaller cases.
2. I call it a structural flaw, because as one user pointed out, rsync works much faster and smoother without freezing the desktop etc. (I tested it multiple times myself).
This is a clear sign to me that the KDE team made mistakes in the design of this framework as they call it.

Quoting: scaineI'd honestly rather Nate & Co keep doing what they're doing by focussing on the small things that put people off in KDE. Canonical did a similar thing with Ubuntu - it was called the 100 papercuts project. Now they're replicating that effort in KDE (15 Minute Bugs) which is great to see.
Honestly I think thats in principle the wrong focus.
The most severe problems should have the main focus.
That doesn't mean that small problems should be ignored.
But this focus is exactly what people would do who want to sell a product instead of making it good by design.

While this might sound to negative, I want to add that I respect the KDE team, but to some degree I think they make wrong choices.
And the project could do better with better general choices.

I am also a KDE user now, after years of avoiding it because of a very bad experience in the past (mid 2000s).
I am even trying Wayland right now, and it runs quite well.

There is no way around it, KDE is probably the best DE in terms of functionality etc., though it still has many many flaws.
So I am happy that they keep fixing it, though it goes very slowly.

I would really wish that more developers could unite to create a really great DE, but that will probably never happen, so I have to stick with KDE and hope that at some point they will fix the flaws .

Microsoft to acquire Activision Blizzard
20 Jan 2022 at 10:25 am UTC

I think there are two sides of one coin:

1. The bad news:
The bad news can be essentially three things:

- We might see something become reality that some folks (including economic professors) predict for years, which is subscription service only. If Microsoft (and others like Sony) do(es) this, we will see a whole new way of gaming economy and it won't be the good kind, very especially for Linux Gaming, Mods etc. it won't be any good.

- We might see this whole thing imploding, which means, Microsoft will close down many studios if this doesn't work out for them (not enough revenue and/or bad games). This could lead to a video games industry crisis in the worst case, but even in the best case (of this scenario), we could see some franchises die forever.

- We might see Microsoft becoming a very aggressive monopolist, which will be bad on many terms, including bad games, higher prices, less player freedom etc.

2. the good news:
There is a hopeful side though as well, even though it is limited in time...

- We might see that Microsoft really wants to use the whole potencial of their new franchises and companies.
In the best case we might even see big improvements, new games for loved franchises, maybe even new franchises etc.

The biggest caveat in this scenario is not even Microsoft itself (because we have already seen this scenario with Sony which tries to make at least some very good games), but with the studios, especially Blizzard is not the company of masters, it used to be, so I'm sry, but I doubt that the team of today can do great...
But two possibilities have to be mentioned here as well:
- maybe some better developers will come (back)
- maybe other teams are interested and allowed to do something with the franchises

In the end, we will see soon enough what will happen.

Quoting: undeadbydawnI'm currently enjoying the irony that I've spent well over £1000 on a new computer, I'm about to spend another £1000 on scorching new AMD kit, and I'm buying an awful lot of pixel art games. Cos they're genuinely incredible
I know a lot of people with exactly the same story.
I always keep my older middle-class pc, because I know I don't need better hardware most of the time .

Regarding the Game, yes the concept sounds very good & interesting and the looks are charming.
Developers with passion deserve support.

I hope it will be a good game :).

By the way is there any way to "late-back" this Game (or pre-order)?
I can't seem to find anything.
Update: I found a paypal option [External Link], which is mentioned on the kickstarter faq [External Link].

The Game still seems interesting, but this "trailer" (even if they call it "snippets") is not really showing anything interesting or "new" imo.

I hope they will show something more in the future.
Especially regarding their "unique" concept of adventure gameplay & story-telling.
As well as some more interesting environments, characters etc.

But maybe I am also expecting too much from this little project.

Looks interesting.
I wish you good luck and hope your campaign will be sucessful ;).

Nowadays Adventures sadly have a difficult stand.
Most Gamers seem to prefer Rougelikes, Shooters and big RPGs.

By the way, have you contacted the usual adventure fan sites?:
- https://steamcommunity.com/groups/adventureren [External Link]
- https://www.adventure-treff.de/ [External Link] (german, but they can speak english of course; germany is sometimes described as the last adventure loving country :D, but I don't know if thats true)

I forgot some others I guess, but it is worth trying to contact these communities.

Quoting: kneekooAre there any chances for this release to get in Ubuntu 20.04.x at some point?
Well afaik (no ubuntu user) they update some core packages in circles of six months.
But you likely can find it in some PPA or special Repo.
Just search a bit.

Quoting: Comandante ÑoñardoImagine the next super AAA being six months timed SteamOS/Linux exclusive because, instead of taking the regular 30% cut, Valve takes the 10% of the game price only with that condition... 2 points less than Epic Store, by the way..
Also very unrealistic.

What would be realistic though is Valve developing (at least one) blockbuster(s) themselves (no half life) and release it only for Linux/Steam Machines (potential next generation(?) (for a limited time).
They have enough money for that.
I think their mistake with Steam machines was, that they had no real selling point.
Blockbusters would be a selling point.

But sadly I agree with many people out there, who say that the main reason for Windows hegemony is because users are too lazy to even consider an alternative.

Would be interesting to know how the share of Feral is determined on Steam.
Does Feral get paid, when I play a Game in the native Linux Version?

Will be interesting to see the price tags, esspecially for the GPUs, because there had to be a reason Microsoft picked it for the new XBox, so I hope both performance and price will be good.
