Heroic Games Launcher now works nicely on Steam Deck
4 Mar 2022 at 11:23 am UTC

Quoting: icedfiendGreat work! I was just wondering how to do this same exact thing but for plain desktop linux a few days ago... I will give it a try during the weekend. Some questions come to mind though...

- Why the need to download the legendary client? Isn't the one supplied by Heroic Games Launcher enough? It can be found at /opt/Heroic/resources/app.asar.unpacked/build/bin/linux/legendary (installed from AUR).

- Also, would installing the legendary client from AUR work? (it's located in /usr/bin/legendary)

Using any of those options would keep the client updated easily. In case the manual download is needed, I found out that
wget https://github.com/derrod/legendary/releases/latest/download/legendary
will get the latest binary available (for linux in this case) as long as the latest release is tagged as such.

I recently discovered this site and youtube channel and been following your Steam Deck coverage and I must say it's been great... Can't wait to get mine :D

Keep up with the good work!
To use outside of Steam Deck just follow the tutorial on Heroic Wiki. Then you will need only HBL to be downloaded.
The tutorial above is only for AppImages. :)

Quoting: MrowlHow well does Final Fantasy VII Remake run on Heroic Games Launcher, and do you think it will run well on the Steam Deck?
Runs pretty well I believe. There is an article from Open4Everyone where Jason runs it with Heroic.

Quoting: SacredsinAs always thanks for the awesome launcher. Any plans to add Origin or Battlenet support?
No. I believe after making GOG more stable we might focus on Amazon Gaming. Since there is not alternative right now on Linux.
But we don't know, let's see what the future reserves 😁

Quoting: GeamanduraGreat! Is it able to count play time on GOG though?
Heroic count the playtime on its own. But not the time you have on GOG Galaxy for instance.IF that's what you mean.

There are some improvements to make on the interface and navigation.
Also (not an issue for readers here) but after release, we noticed that games are not installed on Windows. Its the platform we put less time to test and most of our users are on Linux.
Some games might not install or not even load the Install Dialog. Ex.: Fallout classic.
We are trying to understand why.

But most of the things are working fine for a first release. :)

Tim Sweeney has a point about Fortnite EAC support

There is one solution: ship a cloud version of fortnite. Not the best solution but depending on how it is implemented could work.
Several games on the Nintendo switch are cloud based like Control and Kingdom Hearts. There are companies that port your game to the cloud.
Not the best solution, still a solution.

Heroic Games Launcher for Epic Games on Linux gets some more fixes

Quoting: mao_dze_dunFlavio should really apply for an Epic grant.

PS If they manage to integrate GOG in a way I can run the Windows versions of games to get my cloud saves and achievements, this will officially be the best launcher in history :)
Thanks! :)

So, I had applied for the mega grant about 6 months ago since some people were asking me to do since Heroic is doing a favor to Epic, especially now with the Steam deck. And this was one of the arguments I used during the application.

Still, last week I got a big NO from them and they didn't say the reason.
To be honest this was expected and I never believe we could get it.

Like Rodney from Legendary said: at least they did not answer with a lawsuit. ahahahaha

About GOG: windows games are already working, we are just missing the native games now and getting updates for the games, but this is working on.
Cloud saves might be possible in the future, not on the first implementation though.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleWish Lutris team would do some work to make that a bit more Steam Deck friendly.

On Twitter there was some back 'n forth between Heroic and Bottles about potentially allowing Heroic to use Bottles to manage wine. A stellar idea!

Thread here: Twitter [External Link]
Yes, we will work on a Bottles integration in the future.
Bottle dev is also helping us with our Flatpak since he had the same issues we are having with permission. :)

A lot of work on this version, several things needed to be rewritten and we needed to change some things in the architecture as well to optimize it. Good that everything was ready for the anniversary :D
