The fheroes2 - is a huge swarm of code lines, but the current team spent lots of months to make it as much friendly as possible. If you wish to contribute to some particular part you can always ask and our members help with pointing the right place to look at inside the github.
Multiple saves is not that hard task to implement. But it is just a half of the work. In addition to the logic of saving several days, we need to implement interaction UI for this option within the game interface. Add new menu items, and organize the structuring and sorting of files in the existing file-management section in the game.
So it sounds like a weeks of work, but in my personal opinion - the hardest task is to make it look stylistically relevant to the game UI.
Implementing "undos" during the battle could be a bit harder from the logic perspective but still possible, since the whole code is written by a skilled humans. The only thing concerned us is the fact, that such micro-rollbacks can make the game proccess dull and even break the overall game experience for players.

Quoting: TcheyQuite obvious for most, but each time i see a "good old game" (not GoG related i mean) i think : it’s amazing how good 2D >>> anything 3D, and manage to walk across the age without much trouble.Heroes of Might and Magic 2 has gorgeous pixel art, made by professional artists. Details and quality are so high, that this game will be relevant for decades.

Every single aspect is different in these games: creature characteristics and sprites, their sizes and the number of frames, different castle screens with different structures and their requirements. Battlefield with creatures on it is completely different. AI is also adapted for using only H2 artifacts, creatures, and map objects. UI is different regrading texts/icons alignment and the structure itself. A completely different spell system etc.
The only thing that could be borrowed is rendering principles and basic structure of the AI. But it still should be drastically reworked. The rest should be created from the scratch, as we did working on fheroes2 project.

Quoting: DMJCThey should take fheroes2, drop the code into a second repository and strip out all the Heroes 2 features to make an open source version of Heroes of Might and Magic 1. The engines are very similar, it's just Heroes 1 is a less refined version of Heroes 2.Hi. These two games are absolutely different regarding the code.

Speaking of gameplay, Heroes 2 is not really different from later series. It has a few less skills, factions, artifacts but even experienced players of later series are enjoying HoMM2. The lack of content is going to be fixed in the upcoming fheroes2 expansion, which is planned to bring a bunch of new objects, creatures and game mechanics.

Quoting: CyrilHeroes 2 has a gorgeous pixel art made by professional artists for NWC. Pixel art ages not so noticeably, comparing to 3d pre-rendered art of Heroes 3. It has its charm and animations are detailed and nice. Anyway, all Heroes 1-5 games look awesome.Quoting: JahimselfI played 3, 4 and 5, a lot, but at different times. I played only a little bit of the 2. I tried a bit the 6th, it was pretty bad though, but maybe I will give it another chance in the future. The 3 is still my favorite by far.Quoting: pbIt's very similar, except units and factions are a bit different. Not as deep, no as balanced, but it has very good soundtrack and it's own rythm and design. Story is deliberatly cliché in a good way (voice acting pretty good in my language: french) I quite like it. I'm doing the backward way. Went from 3 to 2, and next I'm gonna purchase the first episode, and maybe 4 & 5 after :)Quoting: hardpenguinHeck yes. Probably my favorite HoMM game.Is it better than HoMM3? It looks better, but what about gameplay?
The 5 is pretty like the 3 but with "3D" graphics for me, so at the time I discovered it I though it was the perfect game for a time, but you know what it's like to try something new...
As for the 4... be prepared, as the gameplay have tons of changes compared to the 3... some hate it, some love it.
But I disagree on "It looks better", the 3 looks gorgeous to me. ^^ For me the 2 has nice graphics but it tell its age.

Also, Primary attributes have a greater influence on troops, so strength-specialized fractions can deal much more physical damage, over weak wizards.
Also, regarding special abilities of creatures... With the help of our open engine we will add description to every creature in game. Just give us some time to polish our engine.

Quoting: CyrilI started with Heroes III on my side. But yesterday I seriously tried Heroes II with fheroes2, big map, hard mode, it run very well! Graphically it's another world, but after a while you get used to it, and even old it's still charming.Heroes of Might and Magic II is balanced in not obvious way, comparing to Heroes 3, where it was implemented mostly through creatures. In Heroes 2 there's an essential differences in movement speed of faction. (Also, I should note here, that heroes move not so fast over world map, comparing to H3, so movement distance is very important)
It's very interesting to see the differences between the two games thought, some things are bad, some are better.

Also, each game always has some flaws after release and can be improved in some gameplay aspects. Original HoMM game has them too, and I'm 100% sure you're abusing them. ) I'm not against fixing them and making game as it was supposed to be.

Quoting: CyrilWhat do you mean by "small quality of life improvements"? This game is perfect period. :tongue:There're dozens of places, where fans improved gameplay, making it more comfortable and enjoyable. (I'm talking about mostly UI)
No seriously, you mean like move all troops in one click? I play mostly with only one hero so...

Or for SDL2 you can stretch the window itself.
Also, try to prefer not extremely high resolution. Simple HD would be enough even for large screens.
