Quoting: BogomipsNo, I mean the result was, with dependency errors and I didn't want to investigate further because the standalone install works fine for me.
Nvidia driver from backports (and even experimental) works great for me for years now. It seems the driver is so independent of the rest that "it just works".

Quoting: damarrinTo rain a little on everyone's parade (mine included), people on another gaming website I go to have been saying en masse how it's an instant Windows install for it to be even remotely useful. That's what the "general public" thinks, unfortunately :-(
Well, while I fear too many will, taking loud people on the net for the "general public" might also lead to the impression that most people wouldn't like to have a Covid vaccination...

Quoting: LoftyBut the biggest question i have is at what cost is EAC / Battle-eye being integrated ? AFAIK these are extremely invasive pieces of software that many consider to be basically spyware.
It's not going to be integrated into the kernel. There isn't time between now and December to get that done, even if were an uncontroversial thing that everyone agreed was a great idea.
They could roll their own kernel though, without integrating into mainline. I don't think they will, but that could be done all fine in the background already.

Quoting: denyasisI think the simplest and easiest thing to do is for valve to treatt it like another platform on Steam. Have a "Deck" icon for Linux+whitelisted+supported games.

Other wise I think you'll have disappointed people.
Hopefully it'll be the Linux (SteamOS) icon, otherwise I think they'll have disappointed me.

The problem with supporting "all games" is not only that it's hard. Additionally, it's a moving target. Even if you manage to support everything out now, there'll be new games coming out before Christmas, and I doubt even Valve had got the power to make all of them run great. Or make all of them run, even. You'd need to get your hands on the game early enough before the release I'd wager.

*lol*
Didn't see that one "coming"!

Quoting: Matomboonly with the "research" patch available from the dev website ;)
Is there a way to know the research patch has been successfully applied easily, like in the main screen or menu or such? Or do I just have to wait for the research results?

Quoting: ObsidianBlkI'm excited by this device and am very tempted to put that $5 for the option to buy one! I'm opposed to pre-ordering, they're not asking for the full bank up front, so, if, as the months go by, warning signs start cropping up, I haven't wasted much money at all.
None at all, it is refunded at any time:

if you cancel within 30 days of placing your reservation, you'll get refunded via the payment method you used for your reservation. Anything past the 30 day window gets refunded to your Steam Wallet.

Quoting: dubigrasuI'm pretty sure many will do that, basically almost all the Steam Machines (old and new) were stripped of SteamOS and went full Windows, the same with many Atari machines.
The poor game selection was definitely a factor for that, and hopefully it will be not the case for Steam Deck, but many gamers are enthusiast tinkerers and installing a familiar and proven OS is the least of their worries.
Hm. While I'd be confident to change OS on a Steam Machine - a PC box -, I'd be less confident to do so on a specialized integrated system like the Steam Deck.
