Steam Next Fest returns on October 1 with developers able to submit now

Quoting: PhiladelphusThat's cool about Valve limiting games to one appearance (per year, it sounds like) to give more devs a chance to show their stuff off. I know I've found a few games through previous Next Fests (demos help a lot for getting me interested in something coming!) and look forward to more in the future.
I find it even more cool that they seem to have enough developers doing demos to demand this! :)

Valve corrects the RAM specs for the Steam Deck, games should run nicely from SD Card

Quoting: slaapliedjeWould be pretty funny if the EFI didn't support secure boot, so specifically blocked Windows 11 from working... or missed TPM 2.0, etc.
🎉🥳

Quoting: ShmerlIf anything variable refresh rate can reduce power consumption of the screen, so sounds like a good feature for a portable device, but it requires extra logic in the display controller. Question is, is anyone making them? Though given Valve are designing their own hardware (to some degree), they can simply make it happen.
A quick search doesn't point in the direction of refresh rate changing display power consumption significantly. The actual glowing seems to be what's using the energy.

Ryan Gordon and Ethan Lee on Proton and the Steam Deck

Quoting: skinnyrafSo it seems that this time Valve does not want this dependency. They control Proton, they work with Wine developers, so if something breaks, they can fix it themselves. Thus this time the message to developers is not to develop for Linux, but to ensure that their games use Proton-friendly technology (especially Vulkan) and Valve would take care of the rest.
Hm. Seen from developer's side, the opposite would be true: You control your port, but not what happens with Proton.

Valve has formally announced the Steam Deck, a portable handheld console with SteamOS

Quoting: fleskIt's probably because we're not in the EU, but neither is the UK, so I don't know why they couldn't make an exception for us too. Norway is subject to the same certifications and requirements on consumer electronics as the rest of the EU, so there's no additional red tape either.
I could imagine UK is the first country (that doesn't count as enemy) a US citizen comes to mind when thinking of something outside the USA. (US citizens, please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Ubisoft are keeping an eye on the Steam Deck, will release on it if it's big enough

Quoting: PhiladelphusHmm, the fact that they didn't mention it specifically but only in reply to a question sounds like they got caught out by the question and scrambled to come up with a PR spin: "Oh, uh, yeah, sure, we'll totally support it if it gets big enough! (And conveniently never quantify how 'big' that is.)"
... and whispering to the helpmate "Go find out what a f**king 'Steam Deck' is!".

Quoting: PhiladelphusBut maybe I'm just cynical.

Quoting: AppelsinChecking out the Steam Deck page from Norway gives the following, happy message:

This item is not available for reservation in your country
Valve is somewhat repeating the commercial and marketing success of the Steam Link and Controller. "Let's not sell this to people with lots of money, eager to spend!" Seriously...
I understand why they are reluctant to send it to (big) parts of the world and I understand the pain of the (many) people living there, but countries like Norway really come as a surprise. The only explanation I got is that it's kind of a blind spot. They should find it way up in the list of richest countries - if they'd just take a look...

Quoting: mahagrNow I just want to know whether the 7" screen supports variable refresh rate.. If it does, it really starts to look like a dream handheld.
I wouldn't think so. Sounds like some extra complication. (Though I do think there will be a time when we'll wonder why not everything on a computer had variable refresh rate decades earlier. :D )

I think I haven't seen it mentioned here yet: All Steam Decks got an M.2 slot for short (M.2230) SSDs [External Link]. In the smallest variant, it's empty. I cannot say how accessible it is, though.

Quoting: ahoneybunIt's pretty amazing though not crazy to use Linux for this since I think we have better support when it comes to using the hardware then Windows does since we've been shipping Linux on ARM for years (Thanks Android!).
linux was avaliable for tons of architectures since many years ago
