Quoting: aldyI understand that, and it's ok. It just shouldn't be presented as a means to advance native Linux gaming. If they don't care for 1% which won't buy their games if they don't port, why would they care for 0.5% which may or may nor be able to play their game under Proton?Quoting: EikeIf releasing for Windows only and losing 1% of customers, it won't hurt me and I wouldn't change anything.Looks like your only problem is that companies don't invest money on the "official" Linux version of their games.
If releasing for Windows only and not losing customers (because I see Linux users buying it nevertheless) - why the hell would I change anything?!?
They're already buying, why invest money?
I love video games and I want to play the games that I really like. Thanks to proton I'm able to play these games on Linux just by pressing a button.
Quoting: aldyWhy I have to buy games that I don't like just because they have native ports?Nobody said so.
Have fun! (I mean it.)

Quoting: GuestI never said that, I just said they don't get continued/active support.Soory, missunderstanding on my side.

Quoting: GuestWho do you think you're fooling tho? about 90% of games with 'linux support' are just dropped on linux and get no post-launch support. Support does not have to mean active support, just that the game runs on the OS.If 90% of the Linux games do not run on your system, the problem is on your side.

BTW, if Battletech is among the games that you... dislike - it has been very successful, it seems.

Quoting: GuestThat's always a good question, maybe most of their customers actually do love censorship, dumbed down game designs and political ideas shoved down their throat against their will.Maybe they don't even have the impression of something "shoved down their throat". Maybe they feel game developers have a right of free speech, too.
What do I know, right?

Yes, we're still not many.

Quoting: BeamboomThere's a lot of talk about market share here. Lots of assumptions and theories. But if there's one thing we DO know, is that the fact that Steam has been on Linux for several years now, and the Linux user base has been, for all practical purposes, completely stationary. Hasn't moved in any significant rate at all.To be precise, the amount of Linux gamers did rise - at a similar extend as the amount of Windows gamers. And I don't feel this is nitpicking, a raised amount should result in more copies sold (if that's the only change).
Yes, we're still not many.
Quoting: BeamboomNow, from a market economical point of view, the additional cost of supporting an additional platform for ONE percent potential increase in sale: Well, the years with Steam so far displays how attractive that is, doesn't it? There's not even a point arguing for that - it does not make good business sense. PERIOD.A "period" at the end of an argument is a red flag... You did discuss this with the hundreds of developers doing Linux releases, didn't you?
Quoting: Beamboom* "native ports"... Now that is a discussion in itself. The "ports" are also based on translation layers, just like Wine/Proton. So in effect, you all are playing "Feral's Proton" instead of Steam Play. Yes really. No, really not, from my software developers point of view. There's a huge difference between binary and code wrappers. But this has been discussed often and long enough.

I figure it might be actually counterproductive to show that Linux users buy games not ported to Linux (if you want to have games ported to Linux).

Quoting: NeverthelessWell, in order not to have to argue about that...Quoting: EikeIf I will, I'll think about hiding the Linux sale by the way. I figure it might be actually counterproductive to show that Linux users buy Windows only games. But the point is: Proton games are not Windows only games anymore!

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI'd certainly love to see that Windows 7--> Linux migration scenario materialize. But I've seen a couple of other "This MS screw-up should drive people our way" events that never worked out, so I dunno. Time will tell.I don't actually see it happen (most people will use Windows 10, some just stay with Windows 7), it would have to be combined with your "Linux just does everything better" scenario.

if in short Linux was definitively better as a thing to use than for instance Windows, and specifically if you could play all the Windows games and Linux continued to kick ass in other ways, that this would inevitably result in a mass exodus from Windows and a rapid growth of Linux market share. I don't think that is actually true.Hm... Not sure about that. It's not like I hear Windows users tell me all the time how they are just loving their Windows. And early next year, when Windows 7 is supposed to die, we'll hear that even less. There might be a barrier of "nobody's using it". If everybody knew someone who also runs Linux (and maybe could be of assistance), I could imagine this mass movement.
