'SOMA' from Frictional Games sales figures released, Linux accounted for around 1.1% of sales

Quoting: riusmaFrictional's in-house game engine (HPL engine) runs on OpenGL, and SOMA has been ported on Mac and Linux by Aaaron Melcher from Knockout Games (Hyper Light Drifter, Darkest Dungeon, Sunless Sea, Shadow Warrior and some others). Previous ports seem to have been handled by Edward Rudd.
Thanks for the info! I wonder if it wouldn't be worth it to have their own Linux guy/girl. But still they probably care for compatibility from the beginning, which will make life easier for whoever makes it run on Linux. I bet they've got their in-house coding guidlines containing e.g. "* DO care for file name casing."...

Quoting: Mountain ManNice to see the developer isn't put off by the relatively few sales.
I think 5000 copies should be enough to legitimate the Linux version. The had Linux versions for their Amnesia and Penumbra games before, so probably they are thinking about the Linux constraints before starting a new game, not afterwards. That should avoid some work.

Quoting: manero666I still need to play the Penumbra series, then I will surely buy SOMA, which looks absolutely great!!
I first played Amnesia Dark Descent and Machine for Pigs. Afterwards, Penumbra unfortunately didn't cut in anymore.

Great to hear that!
And if you didn't play SOMA yet, go and get it!
Now what a decision that is you need to take in SOMA... :dizzy:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II, Chaos Rising and Retribution announced for Linux this month!

Quoting: JuliusHmm, while nice I do wonder if these kind of ports make back their money. I, like many others I believe already own those games (never managed to finish them under Windows, back when I was still dual-booting). So this is indeed a nice gift, but I don't really plan to buy them again as I am unlikely to invest much time in those games. Of course if the port was really easy, it might be worth it, who knows.
I think the KotOR II approach was clever:
Port an old game - and enhance it for everybody at the same time.
Gets more press as well.

Quoting: neowiz73funny thing, I've purchased all their Linux ports except Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered and BioShock Infinite, which i'm not that interested in.
Just for the records, Bioshock Infinite was a Virtual Programming "port" for Linux (Aspy did the Mac port AFAIR.)
