"There is minimal cost involved in supporting them now that the core engine work is done". That's what I hope for for most developers. It may not be worth it the first time with all the starting problems, but when you've done it once, it's hopefully way easier next time.
I think we could start a list in the wiki of well done, enjoyable commercial games for Linux.
Obviously, it's not 1500, but I'd be very surprised if we couldn't come up with some hundreds.
Anybody can add games that run well on his system and he finds good work (but please nobody delete games because they, say, don't work with his AMD card).
Shall we?
Quoting: scaineAnd if we're being honest - a large portion of Linux titles from the 1500 on Steam will fall into this category.I mentioned this in another thread...

Better late than broken!
I'm fine with that (still got Soma to play ;) ).
And we've waited for such a long time, some more days won't change much... :)

This holds true even for inhouse ports/developments. Some day, some manager will inevitably ask: "We ported for this 'Linux' stuff... Did it work out? Should we do that again? Show me some powerpoint presentation about it! ASAP!"

There is a third problem associated with some key resellers that is specific to us as a small platform. Even though you buy a game from a legitimate reseller, your money might still end up in the wrong hands. Let me explain. Quite a few of the bigger games that we get are ported by third parties like Feral Interactive and Aspyr Media.

Quoting: CybaCowboyAh guys? From the blog post linked: "I’m still working on the ports" ... "The game will use my SRSL language for materials, so any future ports to other platforms will hopefully just work graphics-wise." ... "Lots of internal changes to the tech that shouldn’t actually change anything but need beta testing. Most of these are things that were changed to enable other platforms, such as using UTF8 for text, rendering changes to support OpenGL and other graphics APIs, and versioning code to load old save games and mods, which have changed format slightly." ...
The only mention of Linux is (from the site FAQs)...
Is the game available for Mac or Linux?Maybe I'm missing something, but that's not what I'd call encouraging...
Banished is currently only for PC’s running Windows. However, I’d like to make Mac, Linux, and SteamOS versions in the future.

Quoting: CybolicI can confirm that the fix works; it was awful having to stop playing for hours ;) Really liking it so far, probably more than any other game this year.I've been waiting for the first Linux reports and then for this fix. Quite a quick one. Now I've bought the game and am looking forward to it...!
Steam Reaches Over 1,500 Linux Games, It's Not Enough

Quoting: GuestI don't see how Steam's popularity has had that big of an impact. After 15 years of doing everthing but games on Linux (and nearly not using Steam at all, BTW), Steam brought me to Linux gaming - or Linux gaming to me? But I guess I'm the only one, as Steam's impact has been so little...

My main point is that I don't want one of the two (no, I won't count VP) companies to bring "double A" productions to Linux being blamed based on (understandable!) discontent and some assumptions. I hope they are aiming for full support and I do see some indications for that.

Quoting: GuestFeral were the ones who said to me that they don't care beyond it working with the nvidia blobs. I have it in an email. That was for Shadow of Mordor. You may have more information than me. I never did an API trace on any game (what's the tool to do that?).
As for needing a rewrite of their code, that's based upon talks with them, and looking at the apitrace of some games. They look to be improving things already which work nicer with how OpenGL should work, but a proper rewrite takes time and money. That's where my own suspicions come into play.

But as long as he finds that "likely" - which is what he said -, there's not much point to it.
I find it likely that Feral seeks to support all Steam Machine hardware in the future, including AMD GPUs, in order to have as many possible customers as they can, and that AMD's release notes, Feral buying AMD GPUs and running all kinds of AMD drivers are signs of them actively pursuing that.

Quoting: subIn case they really send AMD, mainly Nvidia optimized code, it's not what I consider "caring about AMD".If that would be the case, he would obviously be right.
