Feeling Angry? Hatred Looks Like It Will Come To Linux

So for once we're going to get a buggy port with poor controller support that's actually faithful to the original in that regard. That's a fresh idea, at least.

Still think they should have had Tommy Wiseau do the voice though.

Quoting: BillNyeTheBlackGuyWill it be as bad as their last game?
Hopefully it will, since I loved their last game. Plus, some of the ideas they're showing off at this early stage look really interesting, with the silhouette holograms and such.

The Flock Will Only Be Playable For A Limited Time, Releasing For Linux This Year

Quoting: stssFor starters, they don't have to waste any money on supporting the game after it's finished.
Instead, the people who bought this will have wasted money. As someone invested in several FLOSS projects to make old games playable on modern systems and in a portable manner, I really don't like this.
Except the people who buy this know exactly what they're getting into, and the experience of playing a game with a definite shutoff is what they're playing it for. Nobody's getting ripped off here, the devs are absolutely up front about what the game is about and the players who like that concept are the ones who will buy in.

Just like I really don't like that idea of that one band (Wu-Tang Clan, IIRC) only selling a single copy of an album, withholding it from anybody else. Even though I really don't care about their music.
There are some interesting questions raised by this comment about feeling entitled to access to a creative product. "Withholding" is an interestingly entitled word in this context, don't you think?

Caves of Qud Science Fantasy Roguelike Now In Early Access For Linux, Some Thoughts

Quoting: scaineYikes, this like like a terminal/retro version of Tales of Maj'Eyal. But having played ToME for over a hundred hours already, I can't see any attraction to stepping back through a time warp to play this. Try ToME for free from their website and if you're into rogue-likes, you'll no doubt end up sinking £5 for the expansion / full game.

Looks as deep as ToME though and a similarly long development story, so good luck to the developer.
I like ToME, but wow do those beginner dungeons get tedious when you have to repeat them with every single new character after you've got turned into paste by some arbitrary difficulty spike. I found it common to run into stuff out of your league in areas that should have been easy, with little indication where else to go as an alternative. Hell, I ran into a lv. 36 creature in Trollmire once, and I hadn't even gotten to the boss yet.

As to Caves of Qud, I've got it on my wishlist to keep an eye on it for now. Once it's out of EA I might pick it up. I love Brogue, so the oldschool graphic style doesn't phase me a bit.

Story-Driven Noir Adventure 'Knee Deep' Has Been Released

Quoting: fleskNot to mention The Fall and The Maker's Eden. Yeah, it can definitely be frustrating to play an episode and then be forced to wait for months for the continuation. The Detail has its second episode out now, but I haven't gotten around to playing it (or covering it on GOL) yet.
Not sure I'd call The Fall an episodic game since it had a self-contained story of its own despite setting up for a sequel. The Maker's Eden fro sure though (which I didn't realize when I bought it but don't really mind). I'm okay with episodic games so long as there's some assurance the chapters will come in a timely fashion and the devs are open about timeframes and status updates.

The frustration about Kentucky Route Zero is that the devs haven't been providing those assurances and have missed their originally projected timeframe by rather a huge margin.

Quoting: Ser Eduardo MogambroWell, I don't want to argue, but then you're simply not the target audience.
You seem to be looking to build a very small, specialized player base, then. Strange decision from a business standpoint but who am I to judge?

Quoting: Ser Eduardo MogambroYou could only hinder that by Themepark mechanics such as adding new dungeons over and over with a higher item level. Only that way you could ensure that players keep on playing, even though the have the best items now.
. . .
If you're not into that kind of game, fine, the majority of games is themeparks and more or less WoW-clones anyway.
There's that "themepark" thing again, without bothering to explain what that is or why it's bad. It's clearly meant to be something bad, but the closest I can get from your comments and the OP is "wussy" or "not hardcore" which ends up just sounding like bravado. Can you explain exactly what you mean by "themepark"?

Quoting: Ser Eduardo MogambroI personally love nothing more than losing all my stuff upon death. It really adds to the thrill. Of course it can be totally frustrating. When I started Mortal Online back in 2010 it took me three evenings (real time) to get a horse from one point to another because I was killed on every route I took. But it was so incredibly much fun fighting these highwaymen.

Now there is another feature, your banks are not global. If you store your valuables in city A and you wander to city B and want to grab them, they are not there (how should they?). You have to hire a caravan or protection or try to stealthily make your way with all your precious goods. But you could be killed and robbed on the way.
This game is sounding less and less fun and more like a chore all the time. So not only do you have aggravation and frustration due to PKers, you also have aggravation and frustration due to sheer inconvenience. Sounds like a fantastic combination, this'll be a smash hit!

Quoting: slaapliedjeGuess you would've had to been there... That really is all the MMOs are now. Ultima Online was a living society, you just happen to have a lot of criminals there, just like you do in real life.
I don't wanna hang out with criminals in real life either, why would I want to in my leisure time?

There's a reason people started to take PK out of MMOs.

I like how they make this big distinction about how different they are from "themeparks" without actually explaining what they mean by that. Whatever it is, it's inferior to this!

Blatant marketing speak gives me gas.

Hopefully the "player-driven economy" works a lot better here than in a game like Wakfu. There needs to be some device that allows low-level characters to compete and make a profit in a market full of other low-level characters. Otherwise, it becomes frustrating to newbies, who quickly find they can't even make back the cost of the materials, if they can find buyers at all.

Also, I like the cut of Keyrock's jib. Can I start a plantation? Maybe a textile mill? Are there markets for pretty or casual clothes that aren't geared toward combat?

Or maybe I can be an explorer and only fight things if I absolutely have to, to protect myself. That'd be pretty cool. That's one reason I'm excited about the eventual Linux port of Wander, doubly so since the game will be greatly improved by the time we get it.
