Relaxing and gorgeous city-builder Dorfromantik is out now

It's worth noting that the original version of the game on Itch did have a native Linux version. So there's a good chance the dev will be willing to release a version of the full game, since they didn't change engines as far as I'm aware.

What I'm hoping for after this is to see the space stations and planetary bases overhauled a bit. Right now they're about as exciting as airport waiting areas. Which I suppose they are, in a way.

And maybe the language learning, which I do enjoy but could stand improvement.

Quoting: ExpandingManHello Games really does not want me to uninstall this game.
The game is full of bugs. Disappearing buildings in my base, spontaneous terraforming and constant loosing of hours of progress (sever issues?) made the otherwise great game unplayable for me (I played vanilla, Sentinel war).

On easy difficulty it is great fun, but do not try to struggle in the survival mode or even the hardcore.
The game rules on higher difficulty are way better, but the bug bites are much more itchy...

Wait for the discount and you could be totally happy.
Weird, I've played on survival and haven't noticed much of that at all. I did have a problem with one of the story quests having a target inside a volcano and thus inaccessible, but that was the worst of it. And I managed to reset that quest just by hopping through a black hole and trying again.

I think the worst thing for me is how utterly boring the main quest is, which is an overall design problem. So much of the game is about exploring individual planets and doing things there, but the main storyline (should you choose to follow it) heavily encourages you to *not* do that, but hop from system to system instead, not wasting more time than necessary at any particular one. And that doesn't depend a bit on difficulty.

So basically they're hoping to pull the same trick No Man's Sky did, where after a bad launch (although not as disastrous), they put their heads down and get to work on making something worthwhile. If they can pull it off, I'd definitely appreciate the approach.

The main thing that kept me from getting on board at launch is that it was pretty expensive for what they had at the time. Still on my radar, all the same.

Well, here's hoping that it doesn't go the way of Planet Nomads, which looked similarly promising in its early days.

That said, I'll hold off. A Windows game has to be pretty outstanding for me to take a chance on it these days. But it's worth remembering if it does turn out to be something special.

So something similar to the core gameplay loop of ISLANDERS, then?

"100+ hours of idle progression"

That seems like a lot, but in terms of idling, isn't that a rather small amount?

I mean Cookie Clicker can measure progression in months or years.

I don't think so - the Prototype is still available on Itch [External Link], but is Windows-only and appears to have been so since its inception (there are several comments asking for both Linux and Mac versions there). The GOG version [External Link] is also Windows only.
Used to be native on Itch, so idk what happened since. When I played it, the game still had a native port and I got it on Steam without checking to see if that was Linux too.

Caves of Qud does still occasionally have a problem, where you just end up dying and you didn't really have any reasonable way to avoid it. Stumbling into ruins as a low-level character and being ambushed by a chitinous puma that you can neither run away from or kill or running into a surprise rifle turret around a corner and being instantly killed sucks. On this aspect I think Dungeon Crawl: Stone Soup does better, because it feels like 95% of deaths are due to hubris or panicking whereas CoQ deaths are sometimes super unavoidable unless you grind very hard early on and maintain a paranoid playstyle.

But the Roleplay mode helps immensely and if you want a character to last I recommend it highly. Qud has a ton of content already and permadeath eats a lot of low-level characters, so it's fairly hard to get to the meat and potatoes part of the game with it enabled.
Thanks for the tip. Never tried stone soup.

I feel that permadeath is big part of roguelikes but probably will give roleplay mode at some time.

Big part also why COQ feels so good right now is that it has a quite unique theme (atleast for me ).

I've played nethack a lot lately and it feels fun to be in a sci-fi setup.
I've said it before, but I believe that permadeath in CoQ is an artifact left over from early in development, when the game was a more traditional roguelike. The game itself has strayed considerably from those roots and become a much different experience. Outside of challenge runs like the dailies, it's now more focused on the story and worldbuilding, which is very hard to appreciate when you're constantly being sent back to the beginning thanks to bad luck.
Ok, I undestand wha you mean. Is there any penalty for dying? Other than youll go back to the starting location?
You have to make a whole new character, and obviously you need to do all the early game stuff all over again. But you're not starting with a debuff or anything, no.

It is a bit tiresome the 30th time you have to go to Red Rock though, because you can't get past [REDACTED] or are unlucky enough to run into a [FNORD].
