The 7DFPS Challenge 2014: A Linux Perspective

Thanks guys! If either of you (or anyone else) gets involved with 7DFPS next year, let me know. I'd love to see more Linux using developers participating :D

Also, if anybody gets a chance to try out any of this year's games, I'd be keen to hear some more opinions!

As an aside, Liam was excited enough by War of Toys to reach out to the developers and ask if they had plans to continue development. Apparently they do [External Link].

The Probably Archery developers have put their title, Paint the town Red up on Greenlight [External Link] offering Linux support and are hoping to have Linux builds available at some point soon [External Link].

There are likely to be more and more titles offering Linux builds over time (when 7DFPS ended, about half of what's here now did), so feel free to peruse the non-Linux games as well and let developers know what you appreciate!

How Steam Computes Linux Sales

Quoting: pd12So I guess this GoL article is right. =)
The stuff you're quoting is about getting third parties like Aspyr payed (which is important, of course), not about what stats are visible to developers/publishers (and Aspyr as well, I imagine) - that's the distinction that I'm trying to highlight.

I haven't yet found anybody who's been able to confirm that that first week platform assignment figure is even viewable in the Steamworks stats stuff (I am asking around though and will report back with what I come up with), but either way, developers/publishers can see and probably rely on stats beyond the stuff that the article talks about.

How Steam Computes Linux Sales

Steam does let developers see which platform a purchase was made from even if that platform currently isn't supported by the game (developers can see sales made via Android devices for example), so the article doesn't really talk about how Steam calculates "sales", but instead how another number is calculated (one that's used for per platform royalty purposes that's meant to try to make things fair for the businesses involved).

Here's a nice quote [External Link] from a developer who has a game on Steam that doesn't support Linux about the type of sales data they can see:

Incorrect. My game is not out on Linux yet but I can see Linux purchases in the stats page.
The only reason I'm talking about my game is because it's a clear example of a game that does not run on Linux, is sold on Steam and has been bought by Linux users.

I have no idea how come other developers can't see if it's a Linux purchase or not. It's clear as day in the sales numbers. Makes me wonder if they're intentionally not looking at that data for whatever reason.

Grim Fandango Release Date And Day Of The Tentacle Special Edition

Quoting: drmothHow did the MSO get the gig of playing the Grim Fandango score?! Although there was a rash of video game theme songs being played at one point iirc...
A backer involved with the MSO pitched getting them to perform for the Broken Age soundtrack, which ended up being a blessing (they weren't expecting to be able to use an orchestra). It sounds like that relationship has continued across into other projects :)

Quoting: scaineAnd Thimbleweed finally looks to be slowing down slightly. Aiming for the half-million I think, although the trend puts it over $750k!!! Surely it can't hope to keep that kind of momentum going!?
On the topic of Thimbleweed, we're doing Maniac Mansion for Game Club [External Link] starting this weekend. I got confirmation this morning that Ron will be joining us (Hopefully Gary as well, but I'm not sure). For anybody interested, it'll be a great opportunity to revisit the game that Thimbleweed is in the style of and to chat with its creator.

Quoting: SpeedsterInnerSpace [External Link] does look set up for one of those final-days victories:

It is now one of those situations where the clock is running out and the outcome is up for grabs, on the border between success and failure, and there are many backers who enjoy swooping in to help tip the balance over to success :)
Yeah, there's an interesting dynamic at work. I don't think I've seen a game campaign fall shy of its goal by less than a couple of thousand, so at this point it feels guaranteed.

I suspect that a bigger driving force at the end of campaigns like this is backers upping their pledges. Right now, if every existing backer increased their pledge by $7, the goal would be met - for people who are about and are invested in the concept, those kinds of increases can be pretty attractive (I know I've upped mine on a couple of close ones before ^_^ )

Stream Introduces A Broadcast Service, Watch What Your Friends Are Failing At
3 Dec 2014 at 7:56 pm UTC

Quoting: Segata SanshiroWhat isn't clear to me is that if someone wants to watch me play, do I have to give them permission? I'm guessing so.
From some experiments I did yesterday with getting a friend running Windows to stream, they get a little notification that they have to allow their game to be streamed (I'm not sure if the stream is then publicly viewable or not, but at least a player will never wind up in a situation where they don't realise they have an audience).

Too bad, I can't watch aliens destroy Cheese in XCOM yet.
For clarification, I destroyed all the aliens tonight. 3 missions, 28 kills, 3 captures and no losses \o/

It doesn't look like we can watch games at the moment either. I attempted to use Steam's browser to view a stream, but tried to update some stuff and failed (I spotted some people talking about this on the Steam forums - it might be related to certain Steam mirrors, maybe?).

Hopefully we'll see this soon. Even in beta, it makes me sad when platform parity isn't present.

InnerSpace [External Link] is the one I'm most excited about at the moment. It's not going to go much above its funding goal, but I feel like it's achievable. There aren't enough flying/exploration oriented games around these days.
