Tactical Strategy Game MASSIVE CHALICE Released In Steam Early Access

Quoting: ImantsAs for me I need proofs from double fine that they can complete they're projects. As one of proofs I will take this game but will judge only when game will be complete :). And then if they will restore my confidence in them I will maybe support they're next project.
That's a completely reasonable attitude :)

Maybe. The game's community seems pretty strong and it's already been funded up to release, so it's effectively sheltered from that :)

Quoting: Skully@gamingonlinux we already have a Linux build up and running. It hasn't had as much love as the pc build but it is already on our radar :)

How do you give the linux build less love than the windows version when it's made with Unity engine?? Doesn't makes sense when you just press a button to get a build for linux, mac or windows.

There's a lot more to making sure a game works and works well than just hitting that export button (Unity on Linux is comparatively young, and Linux specific bugs have the potential to exist not just in Unity itself, but also in assorted middleware and code shared by the Unity using community). It's a good thing that they acknowledge that Linux builds need testing as well :)

Woo! :D

I've only had time to play a couple of hours, but I've been enjoying it so far. I think one of the biggest hurdles for players is understanding the generational aspects of the game, and how the mid/late game can be heavily impacted on by your actions in the beginning (for example, knowing that having high level regents will result in higher starting levels for their trainees once they come of age).

For anybody having a go at the game, it's worth being aware that there's a research item to seek for a full squad of heroes (so if you wipe and lose all you massive warriors, there's a short path to getting more), but be warned, for each time it's used, it'll take longer and longer.

Congratulations to Brad and the Massive Chalice team. I can't wait to see what kind of tuning and polish changes we see over the next bunch of months

Quoting: Segata SanshiroCheeseness - I'll message you and Hamish when I submit that next part (probably towards the end of next month or later) so you can make sure I have everything covered :)
Cool cool. Feel free to nudge me on Steam as well if you want/need.

Quoting: fleskI had no idea that Ron Gilbert worked on the Penny Arcade Adventures or that there were Linux ports of them.
I didn't really hear about them until after the Linux version was hard to find. IIRC I had some trouble getting them to run in Wine and eventually gave up. It's a shame really. I wonder who did the original ports...

Quoting: fleskThe first two Deathspank games that were Ron Gilbert's doing are also great and are inspired by his love for the Diablo series. The humor is top-notch and I loved the story and adventuring. The combat is a bit flawed though, but not so much that it detracted much from the experience for me.
I'd agree with that, but I'm happy to overlook poor mechanics for good story. I had a game breaking save game corruption problem with Thongs of Virtue that put me off though. I couldn't get any support for it, and without a reason to believe it might not happen again, I couldn't really justify investing another 20+ hours of my life into it.

DeathSpank himself reminds me a bit of The Tick - it's a kind of hero that doesn't seem to have much prominence in adventure games (at least, in the ones I've played).

Quoting: fleskAlso, great article, Segata Sanshiro. Looking forward to the next instalment already.
Hear hear!

Quoting: Purple Library GuyI believe "Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness" parts 1 and 2.
IIRC, these games once had Linux ports, but they're no longer maintained and aren't easy to get.
Quoting: Purple Library GuyOh yeah, there was something called "The Baconing" which I believe was from those "Shank" guys.
The Baconing was made by Hothead Studios (who also did those first two Penny Arcade Adventures episodes). It's the third game in a series, but none of them were ever released on Linux.

Incidentally, Ron Gilbert (Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island, The Cave, Total Annihilation, Putt-Putt, Freddi Fish, Pajama Sam, etc.) worked at Hothead on the Penny Arcade Adventures and originally created Deathspank/Thongs of Virtue (the games that preceded The Baconing). Ron's pretty awesome. On the off chance anybody reading comments happens to be in Melbourne across the PAX Aus weekend, I'm going to be having a BBQ [External Link] with him on Nov 1st, which anybody is welcome to come to :D

Here are a couple more that are noteworthy for me: Over The Moon Games [External Link] (The Fall [External Link] - someone handsome is credited as "Linux Port Consultant" on this one) and Eden Industries [External Link] (Waveform [External Link] - this was my friend flibit's first published port, and Ryan from Eden is a really nice guy) on here.

Some others that I'm aware of: Capybara Games (Sword & Sworcery EP), Brace Yourself Games (Crypt of the NecroDancer), Alien Trap (the original Nexuiz (Xonotic), Capsized, and the upcoming Apotheon), Bit Blot (Aquaria), Alec Holowka (Crayon Physics Deluxe), Freebird Games (To The Moon), Christine Love (Analogue: A Hate Story, Digital: A Love Story), Michael Todd Games (Electronic Super Joy), Nooskewl (Monster RPG 2, Crystal Picnic, Bobby, etc.).

Nooskewl also have a crowdfunding campaign currently running to open source Crystal Picnic in a similar fashion to the one that open sourced Monster RPG 2 [External Link].
