A look at some great Linux & SteamOS racing games available in 2017

Quoting: Guestedit: I forgot Absolute Drift, which is a top-down drifting sim (full Linux support).
It's pure arcade, not a sim in any sense of the word, but a fun game nonetheless.

The Spicy Meatball Saves The Day, a superhero text adventure with first person controls, re-launched

Whoa Cheese, I guess I'll be replaying this little gem soon. I have a soft spot for the more tongue-in-cheek text adventures, even if this isn't technically a very traditional entry in the genre. Really nice that you found the time for some spit and polish.

Quoting: chancho_zombieI bought an extra GPU for mining and VGA passthrough. There should be an option for adding more than 1 GPU.
You just told us that the GPU isn't for Linux gaming, so why would it be relevant? This data isn't collected for hardware bragging rights. It's supposed to be data on what kind of hardware we penguins run our games on.

Linux version of 'The Coma: Recut' removed at release after taking pre-orders

Quoting: slaapliedjePeople who make death threats like this should seek professional help. I could see making death threats to child molesters and people who talk in movie theaters. But video game porters?
The relative anonymity of the Internet brings out the worst in us, and immature idiots are everywhere. I got a blatant, public death threat once for correcting a typo. I know grammar nazism is annoying, but not that annoying surely.

Quoting: liamdaweTrue enough, I've changed that to just be a No. Was one I added in haste but didn't really think enough. You're right, using or not using is sufficient.
This is fine. I still feel a bit uncomfortable saying yes when I've only used Wine to play a single older game in the last year. And I've never bought a Windows game for the purpose of playing it using Wine.

I think Wine is great and I don't mind people using it, but I feel like this survey question might not be very indicative of anything as it is.

Quoting: crt0mega@jaycee was getting death threats against him and his family while he was working for VP on TW2, IIRC.
Yes, and jaycee is justifiably angry at those childish wankers. But taking it out on the rest of us and pulling the victim card every second time a porter's/dev's work or decisions are criticized is not okay.

Quoting: knroIs SDL2 used for commercial games or what? I found the Wikipedia link but the list is limited. Game engines like Unity, Unreal, Crytek uses it or who?

UE4 uses it, Unity3D I'm not sure about (didn't used to, but that might have changed by now). Don't know about Cryengine, but I suspect a google search will answer that. So yes, some commercial games use it. So do open source games, and non-games.
Yes they do. Unreal, Cryengine and since version 5.6 also Unity all depend on SDL2. All of Aspyr's and Feral's Linux ports as well. Not to mention Steam and open source engines like ioquake3.

It's pretty damn hard to find a good reason not to use SDL2 if you're a cross-platform game developer.

The Journey Down: Chapter Three has officially launched to conclude the series
24 September 2017 at 7:07 pm UTC

Quoting: EikeI still got a key for chapter one (of which I'm 99% sure it works).
Anybody?
Grab a free key from Eike and save all of 0.89€. :P

(Seriously, chapter one is 90 % off on Steam right now.)

Half-Life: C.A.G.E.D. from former Valve worker should hopefully come to Linux
22 September 2017 at 4:58 pm UTC

The trailer's music makes my ears bleed with the idiotic compressor delay effect that plagues most modern dance/pop music. I mean it makes me feel physically ill. Legend or not, if I play this game it will be with the music disabled.

Sorry, rant done.

Quantum Replica, a game of fast-paced stealth and metroidvania action releases for Linux next year

Quoting: tuubiWait, aren't Metroidvanias supposed to be platformers? I mean, this looks nice but isn't that stretching the concept just a bit?

Usually it just means the progression/story is set in an open world, but new areas (usually with new bits of story) are accessed by acquiring new skills.

Other example of non-platfomer Metroidvania is Aquaria.

One could argue that even Slime Rancher has some rlements of the genre.
I guess we've got the next "roguelite" on our hands. This is stretching the concept beyond the point of usefulness.

It's like we're running out of genres, and soon there'll be like three to choose from.
