AMD next-gen Zen 3 due this year, Zen 4 will be 5nm and new RDNA 2-based GPUs coming

Quoting: slaapliedjeHa, I have been far too lazy on all my builds to bother overclocking things, my systems in general run fast enough to where I doubt I would notice. Back when I used to do it, for some reasons it always felt slower.
It is like buying third party parts for an old 302 Boss, you end up with it performing worse than the stock parts!
Same here, but buying a 3600 MHz DDR4 RAM and only having 2133 MHz... It's almost half! I couldn't let that pass :D
I found the whole process of setting my RAM to run at the advertised frequency and latencies on my Asus Prime X470-Pro more than a bit unintuitive. Why does every brand have their own "cool" names for this stuff? "AI Tweaker" and "AI Overclock Tuner" my ass.

Like you, I found the correct setting only after wasting some time fiddling with manual configuration. One reason for this is that I didn't know D.O.C.P is the AMD equivalent for Intel's XMP, this being my first AMD setup in years. Another was me thinking that as I was just trying to configure my hardware to match the spec on the label, whyever would I want to enable these fancy sounding overclocking features?

Rant over. Sorry.

Half-Life: Alyx support for Linux aiming to arrive with Vulkan support post-release

Quoting: appetrosyanIs the 5700xt as bad as people make it out to be.
Nvidia fans bash AMD and vice versa. Business as usual.

I'm not really interested in VR myself, but I'm pretty damn happy with my 5700XT for regular gaming. If that's what you're asking.

But if you mean in the context of VR on Linux and Half Life: Alyx specifically, judging by the comments on this SteamVR article from a couple of days ago, AMD might actually be the safer bet right now.

I know you're joking, but GOL did exist before Valve first launched Steam on Linux. And people were happily using Linux way before that. Valve has been great for us Linux gamers, but let's not get carried away. :)

My Folding client seems to support calculataion of Cancer, Alzhheimer's, Huntington's, Parkinson's, but no COVID-19...?

FYI: I'm using web control UI; not using fahcontrol => I failed installing it on Ubuntu 18.04, 19.04, 19.10 and 20.04beta, and after trying all possible solutions (none of them worked) I just gave up trying for now....
This was answered above:
Quoting: Salvatos"Any" includes COVID-19 work units, and those are currently handed out with the highest priority, so if you want to focus on that, "Any" is the way to go for now. I believe they want to add a specific category in the next client release, but that could be a whiel

Linux hardware vendor System76 will have their own Keyboard out this year

Quoting: Purple Library GuyIt's a pity because QWERTY really isn't a very good layout, although I'm not sure I believe the story that it was deliberately designed to slow typists down to avoid keys sticking.
I can believe it was designed to avoid keys sticking, but the slowing typists down part was probably just an unwanted side effect of rearranging the keys to space out common key sequences (in the english language).

Quoting: GuestPersonally, I don't like the steam controller. Badly shaped for my hands, feels like poor construction quality, and needs additional userspace utilities to use it (unlike my other controllers).
I much prefer the Logitech F710.
My story exactly. I really like the idea of the Steam Controller. It just feels impossible to use ergonomically, and the various noises drive me crazy. I kinda feel bad about this because I got it as a gift from a friend, and then had to go and buy another Logitech gamepad anyway.

Quoting: NanobangAfter 4 decades of touch-typing on QWERTY keyboards I'll never be able to type on anything else. I'll certainly never be able to type on anything as singularly arranged as the System 76 keyboard shown above.
Well, I can tell you that the brain is a marvelous machine, since I already touch-typed on Azerty before, and while it took me about 3 months to regain (and surpass) my previous wpm speed on the Dvorak layout, this absolutely does not mean you forget how to touch-type with your previous layout.
This only happens with Homer Simpson ;)
When you learn to drive, do you forget how to ride a bike ? Well same thing with keyboard layouts !
I takes me months to adjust to a new laptop keyboard with an ever so slightly different QWERTY layout. Just like it takes me ages to get comfortable with a new game controller. In any case, I just don't see the point in relearning to type. I'm sure you can type faster with your fancy keyboard, but I'm perfectly fine with that. :)

This might still be the first ever C&H video game when it's out. Early Access doesn't count. ;)

Quoting: soulsourceI can fully recommend Last Word. The story is captivating, and the battles are mostly entertaining, although the "war of attrition" that occurs frequently in battles is a bit boring.
I bought and refunded the game because I was so disappointed in the battle mechanic. I really liked the idea as written in the blurb, but I didn't enjoy the implementation.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyThe search stuff is fine for things whose name you remember. But, the stuff whose name I remember I mostly don't start from the menu, I start from a launcher--either a launcher I stuck on a taskbar or a launcher I leave sitting on the screen somewhere
If it works anything like the search function on MATE (and I believe it does), you don't have to remember the exact name. I can hit Win then "word processor" and AbiWord, FocusWriter and LibreOffice Writer all come up, and only one of those even has "word" in the name.
I bet most of these make use of the GenericName, Name, Exec and Comment fields of the freedesktop.org standard [External Link] .desktop entries. Or the localized versions of these fields where available. At least that's how Xfce's Whisker Menu seems to do it.

Oh and Xfce is obviously the best desktop environment for the best people.
