Here we go again? More like here we still are :-)
This is always going to be cat and mouse, with anti-cheat/anti-tampering/anti-piracy shitware. The very nature of it is going to keep it fragile. We're talking about Linux, but things like this malfunction on Windows too, because they are throwing unexpected hooks and routines into the mix and if something on the system isn't exactly right for their trial and error programming, it's going to fail.

So there really shouldn't have been anything preventing that from working.
What I block, is unwanted crap in the first place, which automatically solves a lot of those privacy problems. Other than that, I don't like nannying software.

Quoting: PenglingI found that I had to temporarily change the setting for two sites in Privacy Badger, in order to get the giveaway to work in Firefox. Don't think I'll be doing that again, honestly. To see if I could get it to work, I disabled my "privacy" extension, and in firefox itself, I don't let the browser itself "protect" me from anything. I have "Custom" set for tracking protection with all the boxes disabled. I also have their phishing protection turned off ("deceptive content" they call it). I also have "fission" (firefox's site isolation) disabled in about:config because it has caused me problems in the past.
So there really shouldn't have been anything preventing that from working.

God of War and Uncharted coming to GOG, plus a fresh game giveaway

I can't say I like the initial arrogant stance though, which makes it not such an innocent mistake. Some asshole tried to work that in. Also, the "review bombing" accusation wasn't justified because it was obviously a lot of people angry about the same thing, not review bombing. I would say those reviews are fair game, because you're reviewing the product as purchased on the service in addition to the game itself.

Inappropriate game for the service. That was a mistake that they corrected. Offered refunds, pulled the game from the store, and apologized for, though. They haven't changed their policy. I'm glad of that, because it's the main reason I buy games from GoG.
Is this the extent of it, or has there been more loose interpretations of their policy?

Quoting: benstor214There was some controversy with one of the Hitman games. I think it was the third one. This, "Hitman Game of the Year Edition" in 2021? If so, yes, they backpedaled and removed it from the store because parts of it required online play.

Quoting: GuestBut are the games going to be DRM-free? GOG has relaxed their policies for DRM over time after all.How has GoG relaxed their policies, do you have an example? Every single game I've bought, installs with a standalone installer and requires no internet activation or connection to play them. They still state that their games are DRM free, everywhere I look, too.

I can't get the Blacksad giveaway to load. I tried a few days ago and just shrugged, but still can't, no matter how many times I reload the page. (extensions disabled, cleared cache etc.). I don't have any Chrome based browsers and I don't want to.
I'm only mildly interested, but if I want this game I could get it for the full, exorbitant price of $20 on Steam. I couldn't buy it if I wanted to on GoG right now because all roads lead to the defunct giveaway (that's my point). I may look at it again some day, when I actually need a different game to play. I have games I could finish if I was bored, even.
Crap like this gives me the pox. It's Internet Explorer all over again now with the Chrome engine.

Quoting: PenglingIt's still got the series' trademark pick-up-and-play arcade-style* gameplay at its core, and multiplayer matches are correctly kept fairly brief (a few minutes each, generally, so good for slotting into get-togethers - but you can change that for certain modesI don't like multiplayer anything anymore, but short matches are best. We used to do 10 minute matches on our game servers, for FPS gameplay. I sometimes play bot matches in games, but that too... a few 10 minute map rotations and I'm tired of it.

I've got all the F.E.A.R. games. The main game works well, but the two expansions don't do compatible resolutions. I'm neither letterboxing, nor playing it with perspective askew, so those have been useless to me since 1920x1080 days.
F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin works well, but it can be finicky with Proton/Wine versions AND focus problems can make it look like the game doesn't render properly. Defunct initial menu screens in a tiny part of the screen unless you can get it back. That seems to be fixed with my recent Proton builds, but I used to have to bring up my window list and bring the game in the foreground. F.E.A.R. 2 is my favourite game in the franchise, I like it even better than the first one, which is classic.
For years, F.E.A.R. 3 wouldn't run at all, but last time I tried it it worked well. That one was a franchise killer, but it has its moments.
On GoG (WB publisher sale actually) you can get:
F.E.A.R. Platinum for $1.69 which has the two expansions
F.E.A.R. 2 Project Origin + Reborn DLC $5.09
F.E.A.R. 3 $4.99
On Steam, you can get the whole kit and kaboodle for $8.24
FEAR Complete Pack
Includes 6 items: F.E.A.R., F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn (DLC), F.E.A.R. 3, F.E.A.R.: Extraction Point , F.E.A.R.: Perseus Mandate
PUBLISHER PACK! Offer ends 2 November
Note: All prices in Canajun dollars as presented to me, but it should be cheap at any equivalency right now wherever you buy them.

I would encourage native porting, but insisting just means I'd have fewer games I'd want to play. I'd rather have something that works well with our translation technologies than a shitty port, or one that only works for some people, especially when I'm not one of them (e.g. trial and error programming that favours one vendor because of inadequate development/testing on any other)

When I saw the headline, I thought "Pengling is going to like this" then... "oh wait!" :-)
Nice write-up, it seems that game is a little more involved than I thought it would be.

No, no, I'm not buying that (the distro mindset I mean). Notice that it's the commercial ones that balk the most. The ones that should have the most resources need to "concentrate them" but community distros happily build you everything you need :-)
P.S. Wine is actually working on that very thing, with WoW64 builds. It's not quite there yet, to replace "lib32" but there will likely come a day where you won't need a lib32 back end.
