GOL SteamOS & Linux Survey results for February
20 Mar 2016 at 5:05 pm UTC

Open data request:

Hey, are there any chances to open up the data, at least last year's one for 3rd parties to do some data analysis?

Just read steamboiler's "Three kinds of linux gamer" post where their linux gamer's survey data was used to build clusters of similiar linux gaming patterns.

I also miss media apps, but actually a few days a go I tried to put an SD card on my steam machine with FLACs and MP3s and went to the settings, added the directory and it got in the music tab (also disabled the games OST to clean it up).

Worked like a charm. I thought it would be harder and had to manually mounts the drives or something.

Today I wanted to listed again but the music button was not there... then I remembered I took back the SD card for my mp3 player...

neat!

GOL's Linux & SteamOS gamer survey results for December

Hey there!

Will past survey data be eventually "open sourced"? It would be cool for us data geeks out there to do some corrolations and other studies with it.

GOL Asks: What have you been playing on Linux & SteamOS recently?
23 Nov 2015 at 9:33 pm UTC

Broforce, Rogue legacy, Terraria, Vangers. The last two needed a few tweaks to get a good steam controller config but it became very much playable with the pad only on the SteamOS. It does marvels to these hybrid games with mouse inventory.

On a plain linux laptop Starbound as it had troubles getting running on steamOS and I was to lazy to create a shortcut for the game executable waiting for the following update instead.

GOL GOTY Awards Coming Up, What Do You Want To See?

"Worst game of the year" definately no... but more "infamous" maybe? If there are any overly hyped game that didn't quite deliver... I can think of at least one :D (right better no... they all got the bad publicity by themselves and it doesn't help the cause)

As for categories some classic game genres should be there: platform, action, puzzle/strategy, FPS, sandbox, ... but also themes like "best bleeding edge graphics", "best 2D eyecandy", best OST, "unexpected hit", "more hyped", "best quality/base price ratio", "best of the <5$ games", "Linux AAA top of the hill flag game" or "best local coop experience"

Oh and by the way, to get on the steamOS bandwagon, "best game to play with a steamcontroller"

;)

Anyway the more the merrier, as even if it is 2015 deluxe upgrade :D

Quoting: AuleWhat about "Best Overall Port" from a technical point of view (performance, stability, controller/hardware support) - discounting story, fanbase, etc. ?
"Best overall port" also good and by the way, why not also best "porting team/dev"? Feral vs the XNA guy:D (sorry for the lack of memory).

Free and opensource and going to steam! Yeah!

They seemed to be asking for beta testers last month according to the greenlight page [External Link].

Quoting: liamdawePeople say we don't cover enough open source, well here's a good one for you.
Theres always room for more. If I may give an idea there's a RTS called Wyrmsun and that is based on Stratagus (think Warcraft II) that has been getting quite a few updates lately :)

Quoting: MaelraneGuess what, a Java game (for example) has an additional dependency on Windows as well, namely Java.
How would you install Java (or anything other outside lib) on SteamOS with a Steam Controller? You don't. It would require adding in a mouse and keyboard, going to desktop mode and generally not a good experience.
actually I found yesterday that not going to desktop on SteamOS the steam controller still works acting as a mouse and the experience has become quite easier. For things installable through a GUI packet manager you only have to type the password, and a two thumbs virtual keyboard popups just when you need it.

Developing on Linux is great, since because it is much more stable. Any glitch or hang can be usually dealt with a xkill of killall and even in the rare occurance of a major segfault its still not the blue screen of death.

Humble Indie Bundle 15 Has Launched, Say Hello To Skullgirls

Quoting: GuestAnd another bad thing: This is a HIB. Still, the extra game is steam only :><:
Hmmm.. didn't notice that one! Thanks for the heads up.

Could it be one case of steam only during early access and later be released drm-free after launch?

EDIT: Confirmed! On the Humble Bundle intro text under DRM-free and on Steam, it reads:

All of these games are DRM-free and on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux. (NOTE: Gang Beasts is only on Steam while in Early Access. Once the full game is released, we will automatically add a DRM-free version to your download page. Mac and Linux builds for Xenonauts are currently in Beta. Final builds will be provided to customers when they are available.) Pay $1 or more for access to Steam keys. Please check out the full system requirements here prior to purchasing.

On reddit it was noticed that it is the same situation with Starbound, where on the humble bundle download page I get a "Thank you for supporting Starbound. When the DRM-free build becomes available you can download it here!" note.
