Quoting: Purple Library GuyDon't get me wrong--I'm a science fiction fan. I've been reading SF since before I saw the first release of Star Wars in theatres and thought it was fun, but kind of bad SF. But it's just as cliche-prone as fantasy. Pretending otherwise is an attempt to create a false objective basis to personal taste.I don't entirely disagree, and the only reason it's possible for these things to be genres is that they have these tropes, they're just significantly narrower in fantasy than in sci fi.

Example: it would seem ridiculous to put the Klingon Empire in NMS. Put dragons in light no fire... oh wait, they did that lol

Quoting: Purple Library GuyMind you, science fiction usually means "modern North America with a few specific tropes largely derived from Star Trek, Star Wars, and Andre Norton" which seems consistent with my understanding of No Man's Sky.Even if I completely agreed with that, the things you listed here already seem a lot more diverse than LotR/D&D.

Quoting: Purple Library GuyDo we have evidence of just what sort of fantasy setting it is, or are you just asserting that all fantasy settings are rote and generic?Just my impression based on the video. More broadly, fantasy usually means "medieval Europe with a few specific tropes largely derived from LoTR and D&D", which seems consistent with what we are seeing (e.g. architecture, weapons, dragons).

I should also amend my previous comment by saying that the art style in this game still looks absolutely beautiful which seems to be something Hello Games has a unique talent for, it's just that the removal of the awesome space setting for the rote, generic, fantasy magic dragons setting just fills me with a deep existential sadness.

As a big fan of sci-fi and space this mostly just bums me out. As great as NMS has become, it still leaves much to be desired (ships could be way more interesting, ironically the procedural gen on most stuff is lackluster). Doing basically the same thing but minus all the cool stuff like spaceships and guns but with magic and dragons seems incredibly lame, especially since it's been absolutely done to death.

The game is spectacularly broken for me as of this patch, if not earlier. According to the forums there has been an ongoing issue where the crash reporter pops up. Fortunately the game is still playable, but it's very annoying. Unfortunately I ran into a quagmire of issues trying to resolve this. I tried forcing it to run in proton, but for some reason it can't find it's graphical assets when running the windows version. Then, switching back, sometimes the launcher is unable to talk to steam and the game won't launch. Steam now seems confused about whether I want to run the linux or windows version, and it tries to do some 200 MB update every time I try to run it. I can consistently get it to run by clicking and unclicking "force compatibility mode" but it loves doing that 200 MB update. Completely uninstalling the game and removing all its assets and reinstalling seems to lead the same issues.
What a mess. I love this game but paradox is unbelievably bad at fixing bugs. Whatever is happening here is clearly a critical issue experienced by a lot of people, and according to the forums some version of it has been going on for more than a month. This is hardly unprecedented since some more minor bugs persisted in the game for *years* (that were hardly linux specific). I'm so fond of stellaris, and so happy with the game content of a lot of their updates, that for this particular game I don't mind supporting its development via overpriced DLC's, but that indulgence is contingent on the game actually goddamn working. Please paradox, slow down on the DLC's and game tweaks and get your act together.

NVIDIA driver 545.29.02 out for Linux plus other releases due to security issues

Supposedly although Starfield runs on 545 (in contrast to 535), it is getting rather poor performance, and supposedly that is still a driver problem. Considering that sort of thing is not entirely uncommon, and that e.g. the vkd3d devs can't go in, look at the driver code, and open an issue with nvidia describing exactly why they believe there is a bug, I'm feeling pretty annoyed with nvidia lately. Unsurprisingly.

Yes, I'm pretty sure this fixes starfield (unless it introduces a new bug that breaks it again). Note that starfield was already fixed in a 535 beta branch (which, confusingly, has a lower number than the regular latest).
Yes, I still care about this. Most anticipated game in years for me has been literally the *only* game (having tested *hundreds*) I have not been able to get running at all on manjaro latest with nvidia, very frustrating.

Tested it out on Manjaro latest with RTX 4090 when 2.0 landed and it seemed fine on experimental. The controller icon issue is definitely really annoying, I hope this actually gets fixed as opposed to having to use a patched `exe` all the time, particularly as it will likely have to be re-patched after every update.
Btw, that patch seems pretty brittle, as if you do it after a patch without realizing it, you could wind up with a corrupt exe.

I'm a fan of this developer because of Star Traders Frontiers, which was a very interesting game that they put an amazing amount of work into even years after its release. It's the only spaceship-based RPG that I'm aware with the style and depth of a tabletop RPG. I have about 100 hours in it and enjoyed it, but I felt that the game did a particularly bad job of presenting information about the game mechanics (e.g. I can't tell you how many times I had to look up dice rules) which really held it back. I could easily see myself spending 500 hours in it over the years if the presentation were a lot more polished.
This new game looks a lot more generic, clearly close to XCOM in a lot of ways (not necessarily a bad thing, but it's been done a lot). Considering STF, I would expect that if there's anything particularly great about this game it's going to be in the character building, which as far as I know we haven't seen a lot of information on, so I'm very curious to see more about it.
