Quoting: jensI'm sorry to say for you, but I guess then you will never play this one.

It does seem very unlikely that a DRM-free release will ever happen. I'm still going to stick to my principles & refuse to buy it though.

Quoting: jensFeral did a fantastic jobs, it runs perfectly. Regarding DRM and or transactions, I haven't been bothered by this, though haven't looked for it either. If you don't want to support Square Enix, at least Feral does deserve some support.

I'll buy it if/when it gets released on GOG/DRM-free. Until then, I have plenty of other games.

A game can use Steam and be DRM-free, even if it uses Steamworks... but if it requires Steam to run then it isn't DRM-free.

Quoting: jensWhat issue did you encounter with DE-Mankind Devided on Steam? I bought it there including all DLC's and it's imho a very cool game, with fitting hardware even quite an astonishing experience.

I haven't bought DXMD. It would have been an almost guaranteed purchase though, if not for Square Enix's prior dickery.

First the terrible state of the DXHR Director's Cut. To this day it still has many bugs that were either not present in the original release or were present initially and then fixed - they promised a second patch to fix the outstanding issues, but then it was delayed, and then they just went silent on it and it soon became clear that it'll never happen. In addition the DC actually looks a lot worse than the original release, with lots of missing textures and effects and much worse LOD scaling. And yet, somehow it uses up almost twice as much disk space as the original release + separate Missing Link DLC.

And then there's Square Enix's love of DRM. Thankfully Denuvo doesn't support Linux (and I hope it never will).

There was also the ridiculous pre-order scheme they attempted with DXMD, which they were forced to drop due to the backlash it caused.

Also while it didn't affect me personally because I've never bought anything there, they also pulled DRM-free downloads from their own store with no warning.

Quoting: LeopardAfaik , Feral's ports are Drm free mostly.

I'd be very interested to know if any of them actually are DRM-free.

Quoting: lucifertdarkI noticed over there you have a script for Oblivion, would it a lot of work to get it to recognise the original disc version?

My scripts unpack GOG's installer to get the game files, so it would require some modification to work with another release. There are also differences between the various different retail releases that would further complicate things, and a crack would likely be needed as well.

It's a shame about Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I'm a huge fan of the Deus Ex series & really liked DXHR, but Square Enix have pulled too many dick moves for me to consider buying anything of theirs that isn't on GOG.

Anyway, in addition to the list in the article there are also a lot of great classic first person shooters (and RPGs with FPS mechanics) that run great in Wine... here are a few that I've made wrappers for:

Crysis & Crysis Warhead
Deus Ex GOTY Edition
Fallout 3
Fallout: New Vegas
FEAR & FEAR 2
STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl, STALKER: Clear Sky, STALKER: Call of Pripyat
SWAT 4

What have you been playing and what do you think?

Quoting: cthulhusreignAfter Steam switched to 2.12 to be able to run, everything is broken. I have a Steam account that only has games that run in wine but after 2.12 out of 120 only 5 of them work.

This is one of the reasons I'll never buy a DRM'ed game to run in Wine (the other reason being I hate DRM and avoid it in general - DRM'ed games are close to worthless in my view). I also wait for a big discount before I consider buying games for running in Wine, as a way of balancing between supporting & encouraging Linux releases vs playing games that don't have (and are unlikely to ever get) native Linux support.

Quoting: cthulhusreignThat being said the games i have been playing native are civ 6 and salt & sanctuary and the wine games i have been playing are Dark Souls 2 and Fallout New Vegas (but it is like pulling teeth to get them to work)

In my experience Fallout: New Vegas runs great in Wine, or at least the GOG version does (I even made a wrapper for it).

Steam now has over 3,500 games for Linux, with GOG having over 700

Quoting: Mountain Man
Quoting: Purple Library GuyThis is one reason why I'd love to see a redone, better Steam Machine launch. Or a copyright crackdown in Asia, because Linux can compete with Windows way better than with Pirate Windows.
As Bill Gates allegedly said, "I don't care if people pirate, as long as they're pirating Windows."

"About 3 million computers get sold every year in China, but people don't pay for the software. Someday they will, though. As long as they are going to steal it, we want them to steal ours. They'll get sort of addicted, and then we'll somehow figure out how to collect sometime in the next decade." - Speech at the University of Washington, as reported in "Gates, Buffett a bit bearish" CNET News (2 July 1998)

"It's easier for our software to compete with Linux when there's piracy than when there's not." - Bill Gates, Fortune Magazine, July 17 2007

Quoting: GuestI was hoping to see Dying Light DRM-free for Linux there…

The lack of a DRM-free version is the only reason I've not bought Dying Light. It's a shame it isn't available on GOG; the Windows version is available there but for some reason the Linux version isn't :(
