Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri gets an in-development open source remake

Quoting: eldarionA pitty they will work on multiplayer before all single player features.
I don't really care about multiplayer myself, either, but for a feature like that, it is extremely useful from a development perspective to bake it in as close to the beginning as possible, rather than trying to add it in after the fact. That way you don't discover right near the end that you've made some fundamental assumptions early on which make implementation that much more difficult, etc. IMO it's a good idea to be doing it so early.
As a software developer myself, I can say it goes both ways. You can reach to a point where you find out you have to change the multiplayer stack because there is a feature on a latter stage of the development that you were not counting on.

A pitty they will work on multiplayer before all single player features.

Anyway, I'm going to check the progress for time to time.

In memory of the old Volition, that gave us Freespace 1 and 2, still some of the finest first person space dogfight games.

I'm starting a new playthrough with FsOpen today.

Open source Theme Hospital game engine CorsixTH v0.67 gets a first Beta

A great engine from a great game. Played the campaign from start to finish with CorsixTH and had a blast.

An easy way for map makers to add custom diseases, rooms, specialists and patients would be amazing.

Also, ability to mod sound (as loose ogg or wav) and sprites would be fantastic.

EDIT: it is also a good time to buy the original game. It's 75% off on GOG, at 1.39 EUR.

Atari are acquiring Night Dive Studios

Nightdive is a hit and miss company. On one end they do great remasters like System shock. On the other end they deliver garbage like their Blade Runner remaster.

It's also a company that is not providing a good fell on their first big project - System Shock Remake. The constant delays show me they are awefully bad on sticking with a clear roadmap. Really bad management.

Great news! Time to check it out again. I hope they fixed the annoying issue of modal windows getting behind the main game window.

Here's how to get The Witcher 3 working on Steam Deck after the next-gen update
14 Dec 2022 at 12:47 pm UTC Likes: 1

My question for steam deck users would be if you actually notice any difference between the original and the next gen version. With a small screen, there should be almost none.

The texture improvement is, in theory, unnoticeable on small screens. The ray tracing thing is, as we can see on multiple comparation videos, almost indistinctable from the original (which, by the way, means the dev team did a great work with shadow simulation).

Widelands, The Settlers II inspired strategy game version 1.1 is out now

Articles about this one are the reason i discovered this site and checked it daily. So thank you for still covering this. Unfortunately steam deck happened and now we have 70% of it focused on a DRM digital store, Steam, and it's portable device, Steam Deck.

I sign of times, I guess.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and some reflection on Steam Reviews
16 Sep 2022 at 5:56 pm UTC Likes: 1

You just need to read the reviews to understand why people didn't like it. Overall, they were expecting more of the same that they got on the first installment.

Anyway, to me, the game is awful for one basic but extremely important point: the keyboard & mouse controls are a disaster. They made the game initially for PC but didn't gave a crap about making the default input method of playing games on PC (mouse and keyboard) to work properly. They focused on controller, because probably going console was their goal to begin with, ignoring the main concerns of the PC users about the issue. It was never fixed. Funny thing, going console didn't work for them either in the end. Greed is a funny business.

I love Privateer (and wing commander series overall) but even I disliked this game. The controls of the original are actually better.

Now compare this with Freespace or Freelancer. now that was proper kb & mouse support!

Quoting: eldarionI don't see how it being a Valve product makes it really that much more different than a number of products from other manufacturers, System76 included. If you try to swap out parts or the OS, I don't think you are going to run into limitations put there by Valve. You'll likely void your warranty, but that's basically what happens when you crack open any laptop too. The Deck is basically just a PC in a funny form-factor after all.

I don't think people are suggesting that the Deck is a desktop workstation and it definitely won't be as upgradable as one, but it is clearly about as capable as a generic laptop and probably quite usable for all sorts of light productivity tasks you'd want to throw at it if you couple it with a display, keyboard and mouse.
It does matter because it's a machine manufactured by them. It's not a standard PC that obey to industry standards. You are locked by the platform. Yes, it is basically a micro PC, but like I said previously, you can't do most of the things, hardware wise, that you can do with your standard PC. And like i said, if Valve discontinues the product, you are frocked because now you have system that has a slim chance of being properly upgraded. This does not happen if you buy a PC from system76, for instance.

"I don't think people are suggesting that the Deck is a desktop workstation"

I think Liam mentioned it. Hence my reply.
