Devs are discovering the Steam Deck is good for making games too

Quoting: Liam DawePeople dismissing it definitely miss the point. Hook up a cheap bluetooth keyboard + mouse, plug into a monitor and it's a pretty good PC, and more powerful than the PC I already know some developers make their games with. It's about what you have and can access, just like how a RaspberryPi is the only PC some people have.
I would not recommend anyone to use steam deck as a desktop PC unless you are aware of it's limitations. It's a Valve product, a Valve machine. You are limited to what Valve says you can do with it. Want to expand the memory? Only if they allow it. Disk space? The same. Video card? Good luck. What to change the OS distro? Yeah... About that....

The product can also be discontinued, and that is another headache.

No, i would not recommend it at all.
Having more and more people to use Linux as a desktop is the wet dream of us all, but we need to be careful on what we recommend people to use.

There is a good 'should' reason for why you should develop a game on the Steam Deck.

If you're targeting the game running on the Steam Deck, developing it and running it on the Steam Deck is a great way to test the game as you're making it.
Not really. As a software developer myself, you will have to do A LOT of code builds so, developing a game inside steam deck is not ideal because it will possibly slow you down. It's better to have a real desktop or laptop for coding. Now for testing, it kind of makes sense. But testing is another step in the development process.

Another point is that noboddy will seriously think on doing games specifically for steam deck because it will limit you in terms of sales.

I'm surprised they didn't throw money to KDE, since Windows 11 ui is a carbon copy of the plasma desktop. It was the the least they could do.

Quoting: Liam DaweI don't think telling people to get over it is helpful in any way. We want things to be simple for people.
A couple of days ago nobody knew Daggerfall unity gog cut was a thing and we lived our lives happily. GOG and GammerZakh released this pack and now people are offended because there is no Linux version.

It got to the crazy point where people are voting unfavourably because it is not compatible with steam deck. How crazy this is? It's like asking Microsoft why they don't release a Mac version of Windows 11.

Maybe steam will listen and build a pack of their own, if you ask them nicely. Because in the end, we all know this is not about the gog cut not working in Linux. It's about not working on steam deck out of the box.

Quoting: scaineNot gonna lie, if I'd bought this, I'd have refunded it in a heartbeat, even knowing that this fix exists. I have so little patience for developers and publishers expecting their own goddam customers to fix their shit. I used to - but something in the past couple of years has zeroed it out. I think it's my own expectations, which have been raised by the developers and publishers who do actually care about their reputation and customers. Because of them, I have no tolerance for this kind of ineptitude.

Great that it works though. But no money from me until they do the bare minimum I expect - their game to launch when I press the Play button.
This especially holds true when the developers / publishers are just purely lazy. Like the new free release of Daggerfall - GoG Cut. Sure it's free, because they can't legally charge for it. And sure they did some work to bundle a bunch of mods with it. Problem I have is that the project for Daggerfall: Unity has a Linux binary, and they couldn't be bothered with including it...
Get over it! It's just a bundled daggerfall unity with a bunch of mods. Can't you do it yourself?

Of course we would be blind if we believe they are not releasing this DLC because too many people are suffering. They are just afraid of the backslash and of not selling their product. And that's ok to say openly.

Songs of Conquest looks good on Linux, works quite well on Steam Deck too

Quoting: eldarionYour definition of working "quite well on steam deck" is a little bit strange. ;)
Care to explain why? As stated it works out of the box, just has the cut-scene issue.
Sure. According to your article (i didn't test it myself):

* Videos playing upsidedown
* minuscle ui elements (read barely playable)
* needs you to use proton experimental for best compatibility
* Minuscule text
* Recommend lowering settings to medium

Just because it works great on a Linux desktop and runs on steam deck (obviously, because it's just a PC miniature with a keypad), it doesn't mean it's playable there (yet), hence, not "working out of the box" on my book.

Well... Considering the amount of bad reviews on gog and steam, saying the first one was a hit it's a bit of a stretch. But then again, the term is too vague.

Sorry Arch (EndeavourOS), it's not working out any more and hello Fedora
