Pee in their mailboxes! Key their cars! Doing something productive like writing a graphics translation layer... That's just a horrible waste of spite!

I was then at a conference and I was talking with some people about potentially doing a D3D9 -> Vulkan layer and I was told that it “was a waste of time” and that I “couldn’t do it and should work on something else”.That's not normal.
That really annoyed me, and like, I know I was pretty young (17) at the time, but I felt like I was being treated like some dumb kid. So I started D9VK as a spite project that night in my hotel room.

XFCE actually used a proprietary toolkit at the time (XForms), KDE was in a similar predicament with Qt. Hence the popularity of GTK.
Also, rpm probably predates the apt tool, but dpkg and the .deb format is older.
...I shall now hastily make my exit from the thread hoping to not get hit by the crossfire.

Quoting: scaineI mean, why does Debian get a pass for using apt, when RPM was available the year before? Sounds like NIH syndrome to me, right? Hell, they went with Gnome instead of XFCE, which had been around for three years by that time.I know you're ranting here and probably shooting from the hip but...

It doesn't really make sense to sit on stuff otherwise. Push it out and get as much testing done as soon as possible before release!

Quoting: EikeThey explicitly said they've got stuff not shown yet. I don't believe in "everything", but "most new" would be great already.Maybe that's getting the anti-cheat vendors to start supporting Proton? Or hopefully a solution to CEG?

That's interesting. I noticed one of the links to Steamworks [External Link] had this line "We're continuing to improve Proton compatibility, and our goal is to get as close to full coverage as possible." which sounds a bit more realistic.
Though I'm doubtful that there's any big breakthroughs coming. Wine and Proton development usually happens at a pretty sustained pace.

But yeah, Valve could do better job of communicating the limits of Proton.

Quoting: subI read that kind of news all over the place.A really bad article doing an even worse interpretation of the PC Gamer article.

If it is a misinterpretation by the media, Valve should make that clear, imho.

X3: Farnham's Legacy now available for Linux with Linux fixes for other games live

Anyhow, it's a complete no-go with containerized Proton (5.13 and up I think?).

Quoting: GrifterIt's never seemed like a bad idea to me, that's where they belong =) All a mix of native, steam-native, and steam-proton, never had an issue except for these error messages from glorious eggroll, more like inglorious deflated egg to me :(Seems quite odd to me. Anything in /usr should be read only for normal users. Applications that need to write data shouldn't do so to /usr. But I guess it's personal preference.

FWIW, I tried X2 myself with Proton-6.10-GE-1 and it ran fine. Or, at least for the 10 minutes or so I played. With vanilla Proton (6.3-5 I think?) there was audio problems. No sound during intro videos or cut scenes. In-game seemed to be working fine though.

Quoting: GrifterI have my steam installed in /usr/local/games/Steam/ and maybe that's the reason, cause I am getting this errmsg from steam:Games installed in /usr too? That seems like a really bad idea:
pressure-vessel-wrap[14224]: W: Using libGLX_mesa.so.0 from provider system for some but not all architectures! Will take /usr/share/drirc.d from provider.
pressure-vessel-wrap[14224]: W: Binding directories that are located under "/usr/" is not supported!
