Paradox celebrate 1 year of Crusader Kings III with stats, like Cannibalism being popular

Quoting: denyasisSo honest question....
Is CK3 so much better than 2 that is worth buying 3? Or should I hold off until it gets fleshed out with a couple more expansions?

I have CK2 and most of it's expansions, which cost a lot. I haven't played it much and would basically be a new player.... I guess I'm worried that I would spend a lot of money on a game I fundamentally already have.

Ignore the people telling you that the game is not "complete" without inevitable DLC or whatever else. CK3 at launch already had most of the relevant content of CK2 and was a far more coherent and polished experience. Not to mention fun. There have been plenty of improvements in the patches since then as well. Both Liam and I looked at the game and I encourage you to look up those full reviews and read them.

That said, play CK2 if you have it—it's also a fine game. It is definitely more difficult to get into, however.

s&box from Facepunch 'works great' on the Steam Deck but no native Linux plans

I see that Gary is still his usual lovely self. I look forward to the day where the opinion of some developer who has a chip on his shoulder regarding Linux is no longer news worthy.

Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton
27 July 2021 at 3:56 pm UTC Likes: 5

I'm saddened but not surprised. I saw this coming with the Epic exclusivity. It launched for free on the EGS and millions downloaded it. Even putting aside Proton, there probably would be far fewer people who would actually pay money for it a year+ later on Steam, let alone people who would pay money for it and were also running Linux. It makes sense for Feral to not bother.

Total War: ROME REMASTERED from Feral Interactive is out now

Quoting: PublicNuisanceJust a heads up that a lot of gamers, Linux and Windows alike, have had issues with the game crashing on startup. Some have even been told to refund it when attempting to receive support.

Haven't played more than an hour but seems to work fine on Arch + Mesa with no issues at all.

I guess it's something to do with Java.
Games made in Java seems to be a janky mess in general on Linux.

More people seem to have issues, no suggestion has worked for me though.
Also tested it on my Ryzen 4000 laptop with Manjaro. Same issue there.

Steam community thread
For whatever it's worth, the game runs fine for me on Arch with a full AMD setup. The issues in that thread were more relevant before the big update they did last year where they updated the engine/libs. For a while it worked only with the beta (preview) version. I just tried booting up the game to test and it works as expected.

AMD reveal RDNA 2 with Radeon RX 6900 XT, Radeon RX 6800 XT, Radeon RX 6800

I'm tempted to upgrade next year pending benchmarks and if/when prices go down (or a 6700ish card is released). My RX480 has been a very delightful experience on Linux and with RDNA2 cards being supported already in kernel 5.9 it seems like a no-brainer for me.

Of course, maybe I'm just being ideological for prioritizing good integration with the rest of the ecosystem and valuing silly things like open source drivers over brand loyalty

Möbius Front '83 is a tactical turn-based strategy game from Zachtronics

Quoting: denyasisFor some reason, I want to try zachtronics, but the hardcore reputation that seems to come with the games intimidates me a bit. Now this is the kind of game a simple minded person like me could understand!
I also felt like you once upon a time. I tried SpaceChem back in the day and felt overwhelmed a few stages in. Then I gave Opus Magnum a try and had a blast—it's really accessible but also challenging. So maybe give that a try.

Anyhow, I'm really looking forward to Mobius Front. Their previous tactical game, Ironclad Tactics was weird but cool and I expect interesting mechanics here as well.

Crusader Kings III is now out, some thoughts on the medieval mayhem

Quoting: 14Steam and other store pages say the game has multiplayer. It is not described really. Can anyone explain? [...]
The multiplayer is, in fact, drop-in and you can open up your game for people to join at any time. It's just like the normal game, no "lite" version from what I can tell. That said the host can change the game rules beforehand for more/less randomness, things like faster/slower conversions, and a lot of other aspects of the game. Still going to be a big time investment to reach the "end" of the game, just like singleplayer

Quoting: mcphailWhat a great review, BTRE. I was planning on holding off buying this due to the dog's dinner of Imperator Rome on release day, but your enthusiasm is breaking my resistance :)
Personally, I found Imperator bland at launch and it didn't draw me in even though I really wanted to like it. I haven't really played with the latest round of updates, however. I was thinking of writing up thoughts on the current state of the game but I have to find the time for that.

There's just no comparison between Imperator at launch and CK3. CK3 is just so vastly superior; it has a coherent design vision, fun mechanics and is just so darned polished. Even after playing dozens of hours in order to review or stream it, I still am looking forward to playing more over the weekend

PlayStation 2 emulator PCSX2 continues to show improvements in latest progress report

Quoting: CFWhitmanI suspect that he was referring to the same layer that you are, MoltenVK. I think his point was that, though he doesn't have any information about when a Vulkan renderer would be released, it seems like the MacOS version would be more likely to rely on MoltenVK than any other approach, which would mean that the Vulkan renderer would have to be implemented as well for the MacOS version to be released (much more likely than a separate Metal renderer being developed).

The developers haven't outright said MoltenVK in any public post that I've seen, but it's a fair inference that they're looking at it for a solution. The impression I've gotten is that some developers may be playing around with Vulkan in their own spare time but it's not exactly a priority for the project.

Thanks Epic and Sega for caring. I'm sure Feral is over the moon at this.
