Hearts of Iron IV: No Step back is now out alongside massive patch, some thoughts

I love mods too and play them a lot but the current ability of the AI to use the systems within the game is really dire and I don't think that that will be solved by modders. The only exceptions I can think of is that the Soviet AI does use scorched earth policies sometimes and also builds railways as mentioned in the review.

Quoting: TheSHEEEPAs for you criticisms... yeah, that's just basic HoI4, I'm afraid. As someone who has close to 2000 hours with the game, no, my criticisms are not just business as usual. If anything, invasions of mainland Europe by Allies were the complete opposite in previous versions—getting crushed by the Axis in a short time. Likewise, the Soviet AI used to take multiple times more the casualties of the Axis (sometimes to an absurd degree).

Quoting: Purple Library GuyNon-Stalin options for the USSR, huh? So like, just thinking the most obvious, presumably there's a "Trotsky in charge" option of some sort? That's one big part of the focus tree. Off the top of my head, there's at least half a dozen alternatives including Bukharin, Zinoviev, Radek, Kamenev, and a sort of pseudo-democratic "no one person in charge" supreme soviet option. The possibilities depend on how Stalin is opposed and whether the left or right factions purge each other or work together. There's also a non-communist path with its own leaders.

Quoting: denyasisThanks, I read some of the reviews when the game came out. I will have to re read them. I did find CK2 very difficult to understand, but I partly blamed that on my education. I know nothing of medieval Europe, so even the basic vocabulary was foreign. I'll likely have to suck it up if I want to play it (or CK3 I assume). I've put it on my list to play next after I finish the Witcher series. I actually think that caused my interest in the CK series. It can be difficult to get into CK2. One of the best innovations of CK3 was its better tutorial and more helpful tooltips and ways to look up information in-game. If you're ever lost I'd suggest looking at the official wiki [External Link]. That or just ask people about things on the official forums or elsewhere (there's plenty of people who play Paradox games in GOL's IRC channel or Discord). Good luck!
Thank you for the advice!

That said, play CK2 if you have it—it's also a fine game. It is definitely more difficult to get into, however.

Quoting: denyasisSo honest question....Ignore the people telling you that the game is not "complete" without inevitable DLC or whatever else. CK3 at launch already had most of the relevant content of CK2 and was a far more coherent and polished experience. Not to mention fun. There have been plenty of improvements in the patches since then as well. Both Liam and I looked at the game and I encourage you to look up those full reviews and read them.
Is CK3 so much better than 2 that is worth buying 3? Or should I hold off until it gets fleshed out with a couple more expansions?
I have CK2 and most of it's expansions, which cost a lot. I haven't played it much and would basically be a new player.... I guess I'm worried that I would spend a lot of money on a game I fundamentally already have.

I see that Gary is still his usual lovely self. I look forward to the day where the opinion of some developer who has a chip on his shoulder regarding Linux is no longer news worthy.
Feral no longer porting A Total War Saga: TROY to Linux, citing less demand since Proton

I'm saddened but not surprised. I saw this coming with the Epic exclusivity. It launched for free on the EGS and millions downloaded it. Even putting aside Proton, there probably would be far fewer people who would actually pay money for it a year+ later on Steam, let alone people who would pay money for it and were also running Linux. It makes sense for Feral to not bother.

Quoting: PublicNuisanceJust a heads up that a lot of gamers, Linux and Windows alike, have had issues with the game crashing on startup. Some have even been told to refund it when attempting to receive support.Haven't played more than an hour but seems to work fine on Arch + Mesa with no issues at all.

Quoting: micke1mTried that and it's still the same. A window pops up "choose your preferred playstyle" and crashes after about 4 seconds. For whatever it's worth, the game runs fine for me on Arch with a full AMD setup. The issues in that thread were more relevant before the big update they did last year where they updated the engine/libs. For a while it worked only with the beta (preview) version. I just tried booting up the game to test and it works as expected.

I guess it's something to do with Java.
Games made in Java seems to be a janky mess in general on Linux.
More people seem to have issues, no suggestion has worked for me though.
Also tested it on my Ryzen 4000 laptop with Manjaro. Same issue there.

I'm tempted to upgrade next year pending benchmarks and if/when prices go down (or a 6700ish card is released). My RX480 has been a very delightful experience on Linux and with RDNA2 cards being supported already in kernel 5.9 it seems like a no-brainer for me.
Of course, maybe I'm just being ideological for prioritizing good integration with the rest of the ecosystem and valuing silly things like open source drivers over brand loyalty
