European Commission approves Microsoft acquisition of Activision Blizzard

Quoting: RedWare64And considering Microsoft's track record, they are bad at taking advantage of their IPs and acquired studios.
Going by the now-infamous anecdote about how, when they bought Rareware, they thought that they were getting Nintendo's Donkey Kong because Rareware had collaborated on that series years earlier, I'm not entirely sure that they even always know what they're actually buying.

Time running out to swap your Minecraft account over to Microsoft

Quoting: jordicomaI tried minecraft many years ago, and I was about to buy a copy to support it.
But then Microsoft bought it. I'm glad that I stopped from buying it.
I don't want to support Microsoft.
I bought Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch several years ago, and eventually ran into a bug with a major update whereby DLC would vanish from your account (I'd claimed a bunch of event freebies over time, so I lost a lot of stuff), and the only documented workaround that I could ever find was to log into Minecraft on Microsoft Windows or a Microsoft Xbox in order to bring it back. I own neither of those and have no desire to use them, and at that point had already decided to move on from consoles anyway. When I ditched the Switch and moved all of my gaming to Linux instead, I never re-bought Minecraft for this reason.

The Minetest engine paired with the MineClone 2 game, as linked above by akselmo, has proven to be a perfectly good alternative for me - not perfect, indeed, but very good nonetheless, and the engine offers plenty more content besides.

Nintendo Switch emulator yuzu gets a huge performance boost

Quoting: kit89last I heard the Switch was the hardware from the Nvidia Shield Portable after Shield died on the vine.
Nintendo officially released a selection of upscaled emulated Wii games [External Link] on the Nvidia Shield, with the motion-controlled parts remapped to button controls, as well, so they aren't averse to selling their games on other hardware, at this point. This also seems to go against their past claims that their games can only be made/can only work due to their "integrated hardware and software" approach to business.

I went and grabbed this when I saw on_en_a_gros mention it on the forums, and it's a good one - and a real steal too, since it's currently selling on Steam for £15.99!

Get MONSTER HUNTER RISE and Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen in this game bundle

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is an excellent collection of murder-mystery detective visual-novels with a lot of personality and comedy, and Mega Man 11 is a fab cutesy-robot platformer - the bundle is worth it for those two (well, technically four) alone, never mind everything else, which is also excellent.

Dust off your game dev environment with the Linux Game Jam 2023

Quoting: IronownerYeah. it had a native client for some time. Works like a charm too. At least for me.
Oh amazing - I didn't know that! I'm not much of an RPG person, but I'm nonetheless a bit of a fan of those weird surreal and/or horror experiences made with RPG Maker (Yume Nikki and the like), so that's actually really cool to know.

I never understood the stigma that's ended up being attached to RPG Maker, so I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Dust off your game dev environment with the Linux Game Jam 2023

Quoting: IronownerSilly question. I would love to try, but is rpgmaker allowed? There's still JavaScript coding there...
Admittedly I don't keep up with RPG Maker, but the Game Jam's fourth rule is that your game must have a Linux build, and I'm not aware of any version of the tool that outputs those. :dizzy:

Do the wireless ones require firmware updates, and if so, can those be done on Linux?

Goodbye to Roblox on Linux with their new anti-cheat and Wine blocking
9 May 2023 at 10:26 am UTC Likes: 1

Didn't the previous report touch on them still allowing their game-creation tools to run through Wine, so that they can still profit from users invested in their platform? Is that still the case, or are they blocking that now too?

Nreal Air and Steam Deck together - quite mind-blowing

Blah, I don't think that I'd be able to use these, even though they're super super cool! I need both prescription glasses and magnifying readers, and my vision has constantly shifted over my lifetime, requiring far too many sets of new lenses over the years - and then these tech-specs would require even more of them too!
