System76 release upgraded Lemur Pro laptop, plus a desktop sale now on

Aside from my usual sentiment about it being good to see Linux portables vendors continuing to do their thing, I just have to drop in here and say how much I LOVE the promotional artwork for this one - how cool is that?!

Quoting: pete910or find ways of making the hardware more affordable at a given tier rather than £1000 odd for a 80 class card which is just **** ridiculous.
I have the money for a 4090 but be damned if I'm feeding the greed of these companies!
Oh God, tell me about it. I had originally planned to branch out a bit from portables and learn to build a desktop machine this year, but the prices, even on the more entry-level end of things (which is really all I'm aiming for), are utterly insane! I think I might have to put it off 'til next year, at this rate.

Toaplan Arcade Shoot 'Em Up Collection Vol.4 announced and coming soon

Since the teaser's to do with ShootersFes, I guess we'll be waiting a bit longer to see if they'll be re-releasing Toaplan's non-shooters, like Snow Bros.!

Anyway, good to see them continuing to truck on with these re-releases - lots of companies could learn a thing or two from how these guys're doing it.

GitLab takes down Nintendo Switch emulator suyu due to the DMCA

Quoting: ToddLGood thing I've rejected anything they've done for over a decade and counting and I'm glad that there are other games out there that interest me more than whatever they output.
Shameless plug for "Nintendo-style gaming, without Nintendo!", because there are plenty more fish in the sea.

Quoting: slaapliedjeHow funny would it be if the next Nintendo console actually uses Yuzu for backward compatibility... and then the FSF sues them for not releasing the code changes...
Quoting: ToddLI was thinking the same thing since they brought something about not being sure if Switch 2 was going to be backwards compatible and I'd love it if FSF did come after them for it
Not this time, fellas - all current signs point to it using an updated chipset in the same family as the current hardware [External Link].

GitLab takes down Nintendo Switch emulator suyu due to the DMCA

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualMany emulators have emulated current generation games for other hardware.

Dolphin emulated Gamecube only 2 years after it was first released, in 2003.

PCSX2 started in 2002, only 2 years after the Playstation 2 was released. PCSXR was started 4 years after the first playstation released, and the emulator would eventually be used by Sony themselves in their classic console.

Connectix was released 5 years after the first Playstation was released.

PPSSPP started 7 years after the PSP was released while it was still being sold, which is the same amount of time between when the Switch was first released and now.
Quoting: pleasereadthemanualUnsurprisingly, Citra was started 3 years after the release of the 3DS.
The Game Boy Advance was emulated right from the console's Japanese launch-day, also. This happened as a result of a pre-release console being stolen from a trade-show!

Homebrew GBA emulation was going on a year prior to release, as an aside.

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualBleem! emulated Sony games for the Sega Saturn in the same generation.
Quoting: pleasereadthemanualTechnically that was the objective of bleem! with emulating current-gen Playstation games on the competing Sega Saturn; the quality may not have been great, but if they could have made it great, they would have. I don't think whether the emulator performs well or not really has much of an impact on the ethics.
bleem! was made for Windows 95, and later got a Dreamcast port (I want to say post-lawsuit, or at least very shortly before? I was never interested in bleem!4DC, so I can't remember off of the top of my head; Like many, I felt that it drew resources away from the main product) - it was never intended to run PlayStation games on the Saturn.

Quoting: redneckdrowHere's looking at you, GNOME devs, I'm still sore about you relegating desktop icons to a blasted extension! What's the point of an empty desktop?
My computing background is part-Mac (10.3 was where I learned my *nix basics), so I really like an empty desktop. But Xfce lets me have that with a simple toggle - it should never be missing from the desktop-environment entirely, because I know that weirdies like me are a tiny minority!

Nintendo Switch emulator suyu continues on from yuzu - first release is up
21 Mar 2024 at 2:48 pm UTC

Quoting: pilkIf I had a nickel for every DS emulator with a confusing name (that I am aware of), I'd have two nickels.
There was also no$gba, officially pronounced "No-Cash GBA". This was one I used to use years ago, because DeSmuME ran like molasses on my old grey Dell running XP (and I was a kid with no real knowledge on troubleshooting that issue).
It started off as a GBA emulator, hence the name, but it later on added DS support, but kept the name.
No idea if that emulator is still being maintained.
No-Cash! Not heard that one mentioned in some years! I also have no idea if that line of emulators is still maintained.

Quoting: Vortex_AcheronticThat moment the realisation kicks in after thinking about the name for 5 minutes straight 😅
Well played suyu devs, well played
It's like with the Nintendo DS emulator, DeSmuME. People always mistakenly read it like "Des-moom", but it's clearly meant to be "DS Emu Me".
