MSI officially announced the Claw A1M handheld with Intel

Quoting: LoftyI wonder if behind the scenes Microsoft are pushing their partners to create a mountain of these useless e-junk things to take the 'steam' out of the Steam Deck's success and to normalize a mediocre windows handheld gaming experience until they finally come up with a 2 bit pile of crap 'gamer Ui' for windows 12 (with some other proprietary lock crap) that all these knock off hand helds will be incentivized to run.

MSI officially announced the Claw A1M handheld with Intel

Quoting: Philadelphus"Claw"? Is that what your hands will feel like after using one for an extended period of time? Who comes up with these names?
See, I was thinking that as well (albeit after being unable to resist posting the Inspector Gadget reference earlier ). There's an awkward method of holding a gamepad by that very name, which can harm your hands and wrists - even without the other issues that MSI is trumpeting their handheld having, I can't imagine why they'd want to name their device after a technique that can cause injury to the user.

OpenAI say it would be 'impossible' to train AI without pinching copyrighted works
9 Jan 2024 at 1:33 pm UTC Likes: 11

Limiting training data to public domain books and drawings created more than a century ago might yield an interesting experiment, but would not provide AI systems that meet the needs of today’s citizens.
Maybe they should've thought about that before they messed up the copyright system to cover things for a hundred-odd years at a time? Just a thought.

I think I need to learn how to fish…
Alas, it's not as easy as it is in Stardew Valley.

Celebrate Economic Strategy with the Steam Capitalism and Economy Fest

Quoting: CatKillerI'm surprised Two Point Hospital (which is also a great game) isn't included - it seems like it would have been a good fit.
I'd guess that it's Steam being too strict with its criteria for the Fest. I noticed it with the upcoming Dinos vs. Robots Fest, for example - just having robots or dinosaurs isn't good enough for inclusion, a game has to go in-depth into the societal implications and so on, so I wouldn't be surprised if something similar was going on here, too.

Okay boomers, you get a shooter category on Steam now

No word of a lie, when I first saw the term, I thought it was about some obscure subgenre where you use guns that fire explosives.

Steam hits new user record for 2024 and a record for games released last year
8 Jan 2024 at 12:41 pm UTC Likes: 3

This is great to see! (And Super Bomberman R 2 was a part of that record, too.)

As much as folks harp on with that "PC Master Race" joke, PC-gaming actually has the smallest install-base of the video games market (followed by consoles, and then utterly eclipsed by mobile telephones/tablets), so seeing growth continue and records being smashed is always good news.

I know I've been playing more since the Steam Deck released - have you?
I got mine in September, and it's already become my most-gamed-on PC ever, far eclipsing the previous record-holder, which was my first laptop. That one was a Toshiba Satellite 4000 CDS [External Link], which I played a hell of a lot of stuff on and got my start in emulation with, in spite of it having a DSTN display - I'm probably the only one here who was willing to put up with stuff like that, haha! The Steam Deck offers a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better experience!

Also, to add to that, I completed two games on my Deck just this morning (one that I played over the weekend, and a short one that I started on a whim since I had some more free time and then finished in one sitting). It's always right there with me, because it's THE handheld that I always wanted - complete with some flexible features that I never knew I wanted until I tried them out (twin trackpads and customisable back-buttons for the win!).

I used to think it was an issue, because there's an increasing number of (for lack of a better word) — junk. However, the low barrier to entry, and lack of direct curation by Valve, allows some truly unique stuff to appear and at times do really well. Valve having a more hands-off approach is probably better in the long run, as long as there's good tools for users to discover games they might be interested in, which Valve are gradually improving over time.

How do you feel about so many games releasing each year?
I prefer Valve's approach to the pricier walled-garden one of the consoles - back when I was a Switch owner, indie games would turn up years later than on Steam and cost way more. Leaving that behind really let me step out of my comfort-zone and try a lot more new (and new-to-me) things, and that's only increased in the handful of months since I got my Steam Deck.

The Caribbean Sail adds Steamboat Willie as a playable character

Quoting: Mountain ManI'm honestly surprised that Disney didn't make another backroom deal to extend the copyright yet again.
So am I!

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualHere's another one: https://mousetrappedcomic.blog/ [External Link]

"Mousetrapped" is a webcomic that uses the public domain cartoon, "Steamboat Willie," as basis and inspiration. No claims to any active copyrights or trademarks owned by the Walt Disney Company are made.

The comic is drawn by Randy Milholland, who also draws the comic Something*Positive and the Sunday strips for Popeye.
Randy actually directly addresses the cheap "classic character but horror" trope in a comment on his second strip, saying he's not going to do that here.

There's not much yet, but it's kinda neat.
Ooh, thanks!

Quoting: pleasereadthemanualThanks for bringing this up! I didn't know anything about this. Very cool trivia, and I wonder how this 1933 depiction of Mickey Mouse impacts what you can do with him. He's wearing gloves in the short. Pluto is in this short too.

I gave it a watch, and I have to say...that was bizarre, haha. I laughed at points, but it's definitely suitable for Halloween.
This one is an interesting case in its own right, as Disney does, as far as I know, hold the rights to the depictions of it and its characters that appear in a couple of video games - namely, 1994's Mickey Mania [External Link] which features a stage based on the short [External Link], and is how a lot of gamers of my age were introduced to it, and 2012's Epic Mickey 2 [External Link] which includes the Mad Doctor himself performing musical numbers that frame the story [External Link].

I wonder if that was done to try to regain at least some rights to The Mad Doctor in some form, or at least to muddy the waters?

Steam Deck officially hits over 13,000 games Playable and Verified

Quoting: elmapulthe bad news is the rate of growth of this list vs steam game list...
sure there are a bunch of shovelware on steam but still... the % of compatible games tend to reduce over time.
And that only affects the numbers - you're still free to install and run them and these days they are quite likely to work, there's nothing stopping you.
