What Valve would need to do to make a Steam Console a success
5 Feb 2025 at 9:49 pm UTC

My ideas:
Restrict the console's store page to Verified games only, with a toggle in the Settings menu to unlock the rest. That would ensure the average player gets a solid experience right out of the gate.
Use a NUC form factor (8"x8"X4"), flip the mobo upside down and have a large 140mm fan exhaust downwards through vent holes, and make the top just solid metal or plastic to prevent spills. Usb on the front.
Ship with a controller with a wifi dongle, Bluetooth is too laggy.
What to do about anti-cheat titles? They're a huge, and expected draw. And non-Steam games? Expecting the masses to install Heroic Launcher and add games to steam, then deal with game art, then deal with controller configs is a very tall order.
Liam is right: without anti-cheat being solved, it's practically a no-go.

Valve now warns on Steam pages if an Early Access game hasn't been updated in a long time
5 Feb 2025 at 9:26 pm UTC

Updates need to be made to the store page. Updating via discord or twitter are not acceptable sole options. Optionally, sure!

I'm still waiting on Minihealer to receive an update but it's been 20 months. I've held off buying for over a year now. Early Access is disappointing sometimes...

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH gets stability fixes and a Steam Deck graphics setting tweak
3 Feb 2025 at 5:20 pm UTC

I was hoping for a proton patch to make the game exit cleanly because right now my game tends to hang for minutes after exiting.

Also, it needs to be said that Valve don't promise a level of performance with their verified rating. All they do promise is accurate controller glyphs, legible text, and seamlessness of launch.

Rebirth plays around 30fps on my OLED Deck, with a blend of settings. I don't recommend all Low, but do set character model to High and textures to Medium. I like TAAU and 100%/66%, but 66%/66% yields more consistent 30, and up to 45 in some scenes.

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH gets Steam Deck Verified ahead of release

GreenManGaming has keys at 43% off, better than the 30% discount on Steam. I'm excited for playing on my Deck, and for streaming from my PC.
This may be my sole game purchase in 2025, barring GTA VI releasing this year (it'll be delayed).

Tempest Rising looks awesome and this RTS is launching in April 2025

I quite liked the demo, it hit all my C&C cravings. It feels like a blend of Red Alert and Tiberian Sun.
I wonder if another dev might decide to make a StarCraft knock off next, I'd be down for that as well.

FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH comes to PC on January 23, 2025 - it's getting optimised for Steam Deck

Greenman gaming had this at 43% off, for like $54 CDN. So much for "I never pre-order". I bought a Deluxe key for myself, and a regular key for my buddy. Note that GMG keys don't ship yet, whereas buying via Steam will put the game in your library immediately.

Cyberpunk 2077 gets another big upgrade with more customisation and secrets in update 2.2

Quoting: JarmerOverall I thought it was a fine game, nothing groundbreaking or memorable, but still fun.
I found the character interactions highly memorable, but not the action or fighting. Witcher 3 had more touching moments, where CP77 had more poignant moments with Johnny.

Valve now sell refurbished Steam Deck OLED models
11 Dec 2024 at 7:22 pm UTC

I sold my 512gb LCD to my buddy for $250CDN and bought the 512gb OLED back in June. It does feel like the definitive Deck experience and I like getting HDR support in those games with the feature. Great device. If you want a refurb unit you'd better watch the store page like a hawk cause they're going to sell quickly.

Valve may be working on a new kind of Steam Machine
8 Dec 2024 at 3:25 pm UTC

My prediction: Valve has excess mainboards and are thinking along the lines of how people re-use Framework mainboards and throw them in little 3d printed cases as set tops.
Valve will have a cute little housing to place the mainboard and fan, maybe they can tweak performance up slightly too? But they'll be selling either new or refurbished mainboards as PCs that live under your TV.
