Hell yeah! Most hyped I've been for the release of a game in years.

Behaviour Interactive has acquired Darkest Dungeon developer Red Hook Studios

Quoting: sonic2kkI wasn't concerned that they would take another deal, moreso that I am soured on any studio that accepts it (yes, even Tomorrow Corporation which is my profile picture, I am ashamed to have supported them). A buyout here is a better deal, but being bought by the team behind Dead by Daylight (or any developer that includes invasive client-side anti-cheat and/or Epic Online Services in their games) is just more reason to avoid anything from Red Hook Studios in the future.
Don't get me wrong, I really hate that Epic was paying for exclusivity - but I absolutely cannot blame the devs for taking the deal. Would you rather make a game and be gifted the funds for it, or try to make a game and go bankrupt? Hell, even less extreme - would you rather work for 2-6 years and launch for a chance to go big and get paid, or launch with a significant cash sum and definitely get paid? I despise Epic for many reasons, and they are truly awful for consumers however I cannot deny that for developers, it is a no brainer. They offer lower fees (12% IIRC?) regardless of exclusivity, a cash sum if you do go exclusive with them, and their own tooling (Unreal, EOS, EAC). EOS is of course not as well developed as Steamworks as far as I'm aware, but paired with everything else it again makes sense for developers to go that route.

I personally find yet another acquisition within the games industry a much worse alternative.

I do find it funny that Epic exclusivity seems to be used as a beta period for games now though; they know they won't make much money on epic so they'll wait to release on steam once the exclusivity has dried up and their game is in an actual good state.

Pocketpair respond to the Nintendo and Pokemon Company lawsuit for Palworld

Don't have many feelings for palworld itself, but this sets a bad precedent.

It should not be legal to patent things like that for software. All of software is iterative, and some of the absolute best products have come from expanding or twisting an idea that was previously made. They're not even that specific - I can think of some games very unlike pokemon that also have those mechanics.

Next Nintendo will be patenting the mechanic to jump in a two dimensional world...

Valve upgrades Steam Families and Game Recording in the latest Steam Beta
14 Aug 2024 at 2:28 pm UTC

I was hoping for some more bug fixes related to the recording, but I'm sure those will come in time of course.

Main issues being EAC (and presumably other windows that games launch) taking over the steam recording so about 70% of the time I play Insurgency Sandstorm I go to get a clip of accidentally blowing myself and my comrades up only to find it has a static shot of the EAC launcher and every frame my mouse has covered it instead.

Also occasionally in longer sessions the recorder will just break and stop working, and I've never really found out why.

Still, nice to get some upgrades on this and the Families!

Speaking of families, does anyone know what happens if you own a game (the only copy) and someone else in the family is playing it? In ye olde families, the library owner would just kick them off with a 5 minute warning but I'm unsure who gets priority in the new system. My buddy has a habit of just leaving games running constantly, and it's yet to be a problem but I want to know I can kick him off if need be in the future haha.

Man, I am done with this company. Already done so much damage to the industry, can't wait to see what else they've got to give...

Battlefield V now broken on Steam Deck / Linux with EA anticheat live
4 Apr 2024 at 12:54 pm UTC

I used to play a decent amount of BFV. I bought it again on steam late last year (far easier than Origin was and I got that one for free), wonder if I can still return it. What a waste.

As for alternatives, the closest battlefield alternative is BattleBit Remastered. Good fun game.

I also absolutely adore Red Orchestra 2, though it's a bit more tactical and hardcore than battlefield is (also a lot older than BFV).

Valve fixes up Steam Remote Play - again
13 Mar 2024 at 11:40 am UTC

Hmm, was hoping this would fix the issue I'm having. After upgrading to Plasma 6, I can no longer remote play to my Steam Link on Wayland (input streams back to PC, but no visual to Link except for alt tabbing causing a green rave).

It's a shame, I use it an awful lot to play local coop games - pretty much every day. X11 has its own issues.

Slightly regretting the Plasma 6 upgrade already honestly, my lock screen is now also broken and there's been a little instability.

Plasma 6 lands in Arch Linux, KDE neon teething issues and Plasma 6.1 heating up

Broke Steam Remote Play completely for me on Arch + Wayland. I'm unsure if it was all remote play, or just to the Steam Link. Inputs were transmitted back to my PC but no visuals (And I believe no audio) were streamed from my PC to the TV. When alt tabbed to a window that wasn't steam, the TV would flicker with a green square. No idea what that was about, but gave a couple of us a headache from the flashing lol.

Worked again when switching to X11, though X11 has its own problems with remote play and certain games. Plus, I just much prefer Wayland ever since I switched to an AMD card.

That aside, excited to try out some of the improvements this brings along.
