Egosoft's X Rebirth Actively Being Ported To Linux

Quoting: maodzedunThe game is notoriously bad. They're porting it to Linux just to squeeze a few bucks from unsuspecting players (i.e. people who do not dual boot).
It would be interesting to hear, why do you think the game is bad?

Egosoft's X Rebirth Actively Being Ported To Linux

Great to see article about X Rebirth here in GOL.

Most of the reviews are based on the first released version. The release was disaster without doubts but the game has evolved a lot since then. It is now on version 3.10 and greatly improved. As can be read from the reviews the reviewers has not even played game enough to build first factory - doesn't give right picture about the game at all.

X series and X Rebirth are very different compared to Elite series. X series is about trading and building empire while Elite series is more about dogfighting.

Elite: Dangerous is quite good but still very shallow. As Elite fans describes it: "a mile wide and an inch deep".

This is great time for space game fans. X Rebirth, Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen, etc. There is awfully lot of fight going on between fans which is extremely silly.

Very nice, going to buy this for sure.

I can warmly recommend UrW meanwhile. It's complex and unforgiving, a PC game - http://www.urw.fi [External Link]

Clockwork Empires Still Pushing Towards A Linux Version, Suffering Delays

@Nicholas Vining (Gaslamp Games):

Very interesting read, thanks for the information.

It would be interesting to know a bit more detailed how templates are broken in GCC and an example how std::regex fails. I'm quite sure quite many of GOL users would be interested to follow bug trackers to see how fixing these things goes forward.

Thanks,

Quoting: edqeGreat to have yet another game for Linux.

I personally hope that people who doesn't understand the risks of using development version of products / Early Access would stay away from Early Access games. It is tiring to read whining and complaining if and when development version doesn't work properly.
BS. 7dtd was supposed to be released for linux ~year ago and there were nothing said about early access. They joined it long after kickstarter and basicaly took dump on heads of their suppporters.
To me it looks like the project is not done yet and they are still working on it (alpha stage). Did they give a strict deadline for Linux version or did they just hoped they would be able to make it ready in some certain time frame?

Sometimes Kickstarter and Early Access games fails and all the supporters gets is unfinished alpha product. People who doesn't understand that software projects may fail should wait the final product before buying.

Legend Of Grimrock 2 On Linux Is Uncertain

Quoting: MohandevirI hope so, but the actual flow of SteamOS updates is stopped...

Since the beggining of the project, when they release an update to Alchemist, they immediately start a new round on Alchemist-beta. Right now, it is stopped to Update 145 on Alchemist.

What does that mean? SteamOS is almost complete? What about the online video service that Valve promised (Netflix and the likes)?

And now developers that drops Linux support... It makes me wonder...
Exactly. Earlier SteamOS got client updates daily and OS updates at least once in month. Nowadays no updates at all.

SteamOS is far from ready at least on my setup. Daily crashes, stuttering (Big Picture included), performance problems, etc. It is hard to see that final version would be only some months away.

Lack of SteamOS updates and Valve being silent is worrying. Valve has not yet gave any reasons for gamers to wait Steam Machines. DX12 is coming which makes situation even worse.

Quoting: compholioWell, at least we hit 800 games ( http://store.steampowered.com/search/?os=linux&category1=998 [External Link] ) - now Steam for Linux has more games than the PS3!
That's great indeed, but what Linux would need are games like:
GTA V
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Far Cry 4
+ other big releases huge amount of gamers cares about.

Without big titles like those Steam Machines are going to compete against OUYA.

I would very much like to see LoG 2 on Linux and of course *all* possible games on Linux. LoG 1 was okeish but to me it felt dungeon crawler for casual gamers. Especially if one had experience with dungeon crawlers from 80s/90s.

Civilization: Beyond Earth Mac And Linux Dev Update

The good news is that it's fully playable, but performance is an issue due to the new game using Directx 11 as opposed to their previous port using Directx 9.
Why not just develop directly with OpenGL? What are the benefits of DirectX today? In the long run, it just causes more work for the devs (or third parties like Aspyr). Hopefully we'll be rid of it soon so we can have true multi-platform development, but until then Microsoft's "standards" will just be a hurdle towards progress, like IE was for web developers for many years.

Kudos to Aspyr though for keeping us up-to-date with things.
Probably experience, tools and drivers are big reasons for that. DX12 will bring MS platforms even more near to each other. Porting games between Windows <-> XBox One will be even easier than now.
