Dead Island Zombie Game Now Available On Linux For Some (updated)
24 Oct 2014 at 1:46 pm UTC

Quoting: mastereduWoW, this game is not available in Germany.

Any idea how to get it?

The steampage just says "Not available for your country"

Fack Germany government. seriously. Im 20 years old and they treat me like a baby.
Yeah, I kind of made a joke about this on the GOL World Tour: Germany. It's strange how Germany bans so many games.

I'll get this for sure if it's still on sale when it's official. Not usually my thing, but I'll support AAA games on Linux and £5 doesn't seem like a big loss if I end up not liking it.

GOL World Tour: Linux Gaming From Canada
24 Oct 2014 at 1:14 pm UTC

Some others that I'm aware of: Capybara Games (Sword & Sworcery EP), Brace Yourself Games (Crypt of the NecroDancer), Alien Trap (the original Nexuiz (Xonotic), Capsized, and the upcoming Apotheon), Bit Blot (Aquaria), Alec Holowka (Crayon Physics Deluxe), Freebird Games (To The Moon), Christine Love (Analogue: A Hate Story, Digital: A Love Story), Michael Todd Games (Electronic Super Joy), Nooskewl (Monster RPG 2, Crystal Picnic, Bobby, etc.).
Oh... haha. Well I'll add a few in. I guess Canada is more of a bigger country in the industry than a lot of the others I have done... I think I'm going to have to think of a new formula when I do places like Canada or the UK, because it seems silly to include everything, but at the same time I don't want to miss people out because it's unfair.

Indie Developer Threatens Gabe Newell, Game Removed From Steam
21 Oct 2014 at 2:06 pm UTC

All of this because Paranautical Activity's carousel banner section on Steam said "Now in Early Access" instead of "Now released"
Really??? I'd be happy just to be on Steam, surely that's a small mistake that can be fixed by sending an email or making a quick phone call to valve. Seems like a really stupid reaction.

I guess if you insult God, you get struck by lightening :P

This looks really promising, might pick it up when it's in a later stage of development.

Reminds me a lot of Spice and Wolf... Dunno if annyone has seen that.

Game Demos For Linux, Thoughts & A List
17 Oct 2014 at 1:42 pm UTC

Might have to do with me not growing up with Youtube, though, I don't know.
Well yeah, way back when you would get those demo discs in the game boxes or demos with gaming magaines (which were more or less the only source of news).

Would like to see demos come back even just for nostalgia reasons :P. I remember the demo for FF8 been included in the FF7 box, playing it and thinking "whoah the graphics are crazy!!" haha.

Kind of ashamed to admit I've never played CK2. The only major Paradox franchise I haven't played. I probably will soon, it just looks too awesome.

Game Demos For Linux, Thoughts & A List

If I had to take a guess as to why people don't make as many demos anymore these days it's probably for two reasons:

1 - The internet has completely changed things in that regard. You can watch a let's play or a review and get an idea of what the game is about without playing it.

2 - Impulse buying is where devs selling on Steam make most of their money. People don't even play 50% of their games or for more than one hour. If you give people demos, they get a chance to think about it rather than "oh, this looks good. I'll buy it for 75% off"

I should really start trying demos more... I wouldn't have bought Battle Worlds: Kronos if I had played the demo... Then again, like I said, that's one of the reasons there aren't demos in the first place.

Nvidia GPU-Accelerated PhysX Now Available On Linux

This is really good news but I don't really know when we will see the benefits. Would be nice if some devs start updating their games to include it soon. I think this will make up for a lot of the gaps in performance between Windows and Linux versions.

It's kind of sad to say, but this is just another reason now to not get an AMD card on Linux... I hope they start catching up soon because some more competition and choice would be nice.

Unity3D Games "Phone Home" With Details Of Your Hardware & Software
13 Oct 2014 at 12:47 pm UTC

I do think this is pretty bad and they should really ask before doing that, some people may even be willing to participate if it helps fix bugs.

But then again those with Facebook or smartphones may as well get rid of those before complaining about Unity since the data they pick up and distribute is far more sensitive.

Also, I'm not really sure how those figures are taken, but 0.1% seems far too low for Linux and completely contradicts the Steam Hardware Survey and sales figures for games we see on here now and again. The distro share is also very different to our own survey. Might be worth contacting them to ask if they take data from ALL players or just a few.

I don't think there's any precedence for FOSS on Steam, but there's at least an OSS game launching on Steam in the near future called Frogatto & Friends.
Now that you mention it, there was actually an Open Source Humble Bundle [External Link] a while back which I had forgotten about. Not sure which of the games are 100% OSS and which just use Open Source libraries/tools, but it's still pretty cool.
