Clearing up what games will and won't run on the Steam Deck

Expectations had to be checked sooner or later.

At this time of writing ProtonDB.com reports Gold++ on

Single Player:

Top 10: 90%
Top 100: 89%
Top 1000: 82%

Indie Games:

Top 10: 90%
Top 100: 80%
Top 1000: 76%

Local Multiplayer:

Top 10: 90%
Top 100: 82%
Top 1000: 48%
I suspect the lowest number in Local Multiplayer is 100% due to DRM tech which should be ready around launch time.

To to summarize the numbers, as of September 2021 it's already at 80-90% -- my estimation is that it'll be generally at least 90% or more by launch.

Taking into account Pierre-Loup Griffais' generalized speech, I think his statement is still appropriate as VIRTUALLY all games will work out of box, or at the very least the hardware can do it.

Of course, no one really expects to be playing VR titles like Half Life Alyx, or Beat Saber on their Valve Index Steam Deck -- so if you take what he said with that in context -- it's obvious that it was meant as a generalization or summary of their compatibility & targets. They said themselves that if a game doesn't run, they see it as a "bug" which needs fixing so the future is bright especially considering not even Windows plays 100% of windows games -- many Windows games from the old times don't even run on new Windows.

The only question I have is were we better off grounding ourselves in reality & putting the anchor down now, or popping the bubble later after people had these expectations for a longer period of time.

I think most reasonable and not hype-train people already correctly interpreted reality -- I think we're likely better off since I'd rather have these news articles come out now instead of at launch or post-launch to sour the party punch.

It's sad that we live in a day of clickbait and fearporn to sell news as entertainment, another round of hype videos like the initial ones from VIP before launch could help a lot too.

I think most people's expectations will be met and they will like the device a lot.

Linux on the Framework DIY Laptop has been very popular

Having thought about it more, I remembered that the screen is 3:2 @ 2256x1504 I consider that a HUGE plus. It has the vertical resolution necessary for programming without DPI scaling . 16:9 was a major mistake and disaster -- the stupid TV manufacturers couldn't even make 16:10 (8:5) catch on because they cheaped out.
3:2 is a big plus.

I'm really tempted to buy, but same boat -- I know Intel is pretty power efficient and the open source graphics pretty decent for laptop workflow but I just feel like AMD would be better for my OS.

I really admire what they are doing and their engineering seems very impressive and captivating, I would love to buy their stuff at some point.

I guess the biggest question is would I select a System76 or a Frame.work, they both have similar sheek aluminum chassis and appear to be well built.

Getting off of Itch and on to Steam got my attention.

I don't wanna dash to pieces people who like Itch, but there is so much STUFF on there I really don't have the time to go through it and find the good ones inamongst the bad ones (which are many).

I need a Steam Link so I can wishlist this and give it a closer look. I'm not sure if the graphics are off putting or charming just yet, big AoEIIDE Fan -- also I'm glad they are going commercial -- I would love a well crafted RTS like this and be happy to pay for it assuming it [x] all the boxes on what I would enjoy and is fun, multiplayer, looks good in 4k, doesn't lag crazy during wars, etc...

It doesn't have a native Linux build yet
Well that explains why I didn't buy it yet. I have been looking forward to it, though I think I might have unwishlisted it since it's had no Linux icon for quite a while now.

I hope they release a beta or something in the near feature -- I'll be looking in the news feeds to see when its time to check it out closely.

I never thought I'd see the day, I've made many smaller games in GM. Having had so much time away It'd be really hard to pick between Unity, Godot and GM but I think I'd lean toward Godot. It's nice to have options here in the present (future). I'd love to see more of this in the feed.

Is this the latest example of what it's like? Does anyone else have any good videos?

Quoting: liberodarkThat a great Steam Deck for me :D

Let me disassembly the face plate & grab my spray paint and get back to you, jk. They had controller wraps -- giving people these kinds of options could boost sales quite a bit -- people love useless options that make them feel a sense of empowerment and like the device is now "their own" made entirely for them personally.

I could very much see people doing their own vent fan mods.

Also, I would like to see some "I use arch btw" written somewhere on the device or laser engraved.
