Quoting: LK901Looks like fun. Anything on the system requirements?
It does! I'm headed to my girlfriends parents for Christmas which I am not exactly thrilled about as I'm going to be bored out of my skull for 3 days. At least I have a laptop now so maybe I'll survive a bit better this year. I'll be sure to load this up and check it out since it appears it will probably run on my laptop just fine.

Kerbal Space Program Goes Beta, Beta Late Than Never
16 Dec 2014 at 11:37 pm UTC Likes: 2

KSP does have a semi steep learning curve, but with the help of youtube videos I had rockets in mostly circular orbits within 2 evenings of playing it and I actually understood what I was doing! A couple more evenings of messing around building rockets I was circling the Mun and coming back and the next evening my fist kerbal planted his flag on the Mun. He required an emergency rescue mission because I didn't have a return plan :D In the end he made it home though.

That first step on the Mun will bring tears of joy! Once you have those things down it becomes a matter of larger rockets with more stages and even planting stages in orbit for an away crew to hook up to for missions that require you to go further. Building large space stations is also a lot of fun and I had a functioning GPS sat system in geosynchronous orbit in one of my games.

After well over 100 hours with a couple of the pre 0.21 versions I ended up putting it down and decided I would come back to it when it is finished. It is starting to look like that day will be soon! :woot:

Metro 2033 Redux & Metro Last Light Redux Launch On Linux, Sorta (UPDATED)

I get it sucks that it is missing tessellation and volumetric lighting, maybe it will come in an update? *fingers crossed* but it still looks damn good. It is easily the most graphically demanding game available for Linux and it runs REALLY well.. I expected a barely polished turd that ran like crap. I was surprised to find out it is not a turd at all.

Instead of looking at the "bad", look at the good. The Borderlands games are great and pretty games in their own right but they are not very demanding. These games ARE demanding, they look amazing AND Nvidia Physx is there. Is there even another game that has real Nvidia Physx? I see this as a milestone for Linux gaming. Undeniable proof that Linux IS capable of supporting the amazing looking games available to windows AND running well. Before I just had to assume it was possible. No I don't consider the stripped down version of TW2 a contender because what we got was the game basically running in DX9 mode.

This actually gives me a lot of hope for our future. Other big studios need to see this and see that it is possible when you throw out the old OGL to try and remain compatible with older hardware. Games are now coming to windows DX11 only so they are already not caring about the people with unsupported hardware. If you don't have it and you want to game, it is time to get hardware with DX11/OGL4 support.

Metro 2033 Redux & Metro Last Light Redux Launch On Linux, Sorta (UPDATED)

Quoting: ForgeWasn't this on sale yesterday for 16.99$? It said "on sale till Monday 12/15", but today the bundle is up to 25$. A shame they upped the price just before I got paid. No sale. :\
it was, and this is just a wild guess, but the sale price yesterday was kind of a slap in the face to those who pre ordered the game only for it to be cheaper when it was finally released. I pre ordered but I personally don't care. However, I can see how it would make others angry and there are a few posts on steam from people complaining about it so I guess the upped the price because of it.

Quoting: facelessNo hiccups or lock ups with a single nvidia gtx 670 card with very high settings (and without ssao) and 343.xx proprietary drivers. The game actually runs butter smooth for me. So I guess it might have do to with your configuration?...
Seems it doesn't like something about my XFCE setup.. it is working just fine with openbox. It was late last night when I got it downloaded and I didn't bother switching over to openbox where I normally game. Not the first time a game didn't play nicely with XFCE for me either.

Quoting: EKRboiConsidering the old OpenGL version used the game looks really good. I can't help but think if they used a more modern version of OpenGL (they are using 2.something) performance would be much better... why on earth did they target such a low version?? Even Apple uses a MUCH newer version so I just don't get the reasoning. None the less Like I said it runs well enough.

Oh i saw that when the "beta" came out. It is quite possible their "troubles" were due to them using a 10-ish year old version of openGL and targeting modern hardware. All modern hardware that can run this game at the very least is able to use 3.*. Extensions or no extensions this is a far less demanding game than the metro games released yesterday and they run much better.. so it is either poor coding on Croteam's part or I'm correct in assuming the older version is sort of hampering things. I doubt it is poor coding, Croteam are not Linux n00bs ;)

Quoting: edqeDoes Linux version support NVIDIA PhysX?
It sure does! I'm not entirely positive that it is using the GPU to do the work or the CPU. I have not had time to try and test with and without and watch CPU usage to tell yet. I can say this though.. it uses the multi-threading very well. On my 6 core Intel all "12" logical cores are almost dead even at around 30% usage.

I'm using the nvidia 343.36 drivers and it runs damn well except for the hiccups every minute or two and at least 2033 locked up Xorg twice last night in a 30 minute period. I had to switch to tty2 and killall Xorg.bin. Anyone else using SLI with it? I'm wondering if AFR/SLI is causing the hiccups and lockups.

Edit* Oh, someone asked if I had switched to performance governor. Yes I had.

Quoting: drmoth@EKRboi You're right to keep raising the issue. I believe polite, insistent requests for better support will make a difference.

I don't have SLI, and will probably never invest in it....but if I did, I'd be peeved if it didn't work, and let's face it, if Linux is to be the future of gaming, this needs to be solved.
I can only hope. SLI with AFR(alternate frame rendering) on a single monitor does usually help, but you can only have SLI and a single monitor or multiple monitors and no SLI, not both :'(

What is really infuriating is that the drivers ARE capable of it. In windows it is called "Nvidia surround" and in Linux it is called "SLI Mosaic". However, in Linux they only have SLI Mosaic enabled for their professional Quattro cards and not the gaming Geforce cards. All they should have to do is remove the block on SLI Mosaic on geforce cards in Linux. They have removed features from the Linux driver in the past in the name of "parity with windows" but somehow "parity" doesn't go both ways for Nvidia... even though that is kind of the definition of the word
