RGB version outed at CES! Due to liking my mouse and Linux support-ish from Roccat that will be my next keyboard even if I still think the k70 is a better looking plank.

EDIT* changed photo to MK FX, originally posted photo of TKL FX which doesn't sport a num pad. Num pad = absolute must IMO.

Quoting: XeekeiWhat do you mean "not RGB LEDs"? You can change the colour on the MK Pro to any you want? Individually, just like the Corsair RGB. Granted, I don't know if it's that marvelous 16.8 million colour palette that Corsair brags about, but it seems to be enough to suit anyone's needs.
Can you? I know you can choose which keys are illuminated and how bright I believe, but all pictures of it I have seen are all lit up blue and I see no mention of multi color options on the web page. Would think there would be some advertising pointing at RGB leds if it had them. I even ran across a forum post somewhere where someone swapped out all the LED's for red ones. Would like to be proven wrong, maybe I missed something? It would eliminate one of the things I don't like about this plank.

Quoting: psychoamericanaThat said, I've never felt a keyboard with brown switches, but I think those are the ones I want too.
I've "played" with a k70 with both reds and browns for a few minutes. I didn't do any gaming but I did type a good sized paragraph on both planks. I liked the subtle feedback on the browns and I believe it is why I made less mistakes when using it. The k70 with browns seems to be hard to come by though.. it has been sold out every time I look for it.. hoping that is not the case when I am actually ready to buy one should I decide to go with it over the Roccat MK Pro.

The media keys are not really important to me anymore because now I have my mouse "programmed" to handle the vol up/down and track skipping buttons with the thumb modifier button and the scroll wheel up/down/left/right. Love it.

I got a Roccat Kone XTG gaming mouse for Christmas and REALLY like it. When I found links to Linux drivers/tools on the companies own website I almost shat myself! "No way" I thought. I was for sure that any changes I wanted to do to the mouse profiles I would have to do in windows. I'm glad I was wrong! The 3rd party tools allow me to do anything I can do with Roccat's own tools in windows and arguably in a cleaner/simpler layout IMO.

I want to get a mechanical keyboard and I have been leaning VERY heavily on the Corsair K70 RGB w/ brown switches. However the 3rd party Linux driver/tool still seems to be very much a work in progress.

The Roccat MK Pro has 2 things that kind of bother me. The first may not really be an issue but as I can't get my hands on one to try it does worry me. It is the T# buttons below the space bar.. A.) what are they for? and B.) do they get in the way? I don't really want/need macro keys. The second thing that bothers me is that it doesn't have RGB LEDs. My Roccat Kone XTG has RGB LEDs and are usually set to yellow to match the black/yellow theme of my rig. I would like the same functionality in my keyboard. I think if they made an MK Pro RGB version I would be all over it as I also wonder if my slight OCD will kick in should I have a Roccat mouse and a Corsair keyboard :S:

It will likely be a couple of months before I take the plunge and order a keyboard so I still have plenty of time to make up my mind. Roccat's obvious support of Linux is a +10 on the positive side for them. The overall design of the K70 is more appealing to me though :| decisions... decisions...

Guess The Next Linux Port From Feral Interactive, And Win A Copy

Quoting: novemberistI think it is safe to say that we won't be seeing any game on Linux that relies on DRM platforms other than Steamworks (Uplay, Rockstar Social Club, Origin...) unless those platforms get ported over, too. I personally hope this doesn't happen and (as much as I'd like to play it) couldn't care less about GTAV if they will use 3 DRM-layers again for the PC version.

I also seriously doubt that Rockstar would give the code to GTA into the hands of an external company to port it. And I'm not sure if Feral could really port such a massive project (which would be the port of a port basically)
I think you are right about the non steamworks DRM stuff ATM.. especially because those platform have shown 0% interest in Linux. BUT, saying GTA5 is too big for Feral is not only harsh, it is naive. It has nothing to do with the "size" of the game for one, but for two I think they are getting pretty "suggly" with porting games to Linux at this point. I think they would know what they were doing ;)

Editorial: The First Failed Kickstarter Projects Of 2015

Well that is just no good. I have been skeptical of kickstarter from the beginning and for this reason. Really the only EA (NO! not EA that crappy publisher.. I mean Early Access) I have ever put $$ on was KSP and I've never been disappointed, but squad is a fringe case... they have done EA perfectly and to the "T". They also offered a free version which I took advantage of. After countless hours with the free version I had already got "my moneys worth" and I decided it was a project I was willing to bet on.

It is real easy for some friends to get together and come up with a "master plan" after having a few beers and then set out to execute said plan the next day. Quickly they find they are in over their heads and things end up fizzling real fast. I've been there with countless genius business ideas that seem fool proof with an ABV of 1.2 ;)

I agree with OP that at the very least all game assets should be made FOSS and let the community continue if they want. I don't really know much about kick starter.. but what does happen when this kind of thing happens? is there an easy avenue to recoup the $$ you pledged or is it like betting? You bet poorly and lost?

Guess The Next Linux Port From Feral Interactive, And Win A Copy

GTA 5 would be sweet! It coming to Linux might be the only way I would buy it. I'm interested in it but 4 was a huge let down to me. I didn't play if very long before I got bored with it. Might just be the franchise getting boring though. The 1st person mode in 5 could breathe new life into it for me.

Tomb Raider 2013 would be amazing too. I RARELY play through games more than once or twice, and i've recently started it for a 4th time. Such a beautiful and fun game.

Would also love to see Fallout3 and/or NV as well! I've also played both of those for countless hours and while in vanilla form they run in wine mostly ok. At this point I play with boat load of mods including TTW and wine just can't do it.

EDIT* Throwing one 110% NOT going to be it out there. FarCry4! Had a blast with it after 1.6 patch.

Quoting: HamishYes, all jokes aside, I choose that answer as I have never seen the need for a gamepad. I really do not see what is all that sad about that.
I don't get the fuss over the question either. I only have a gamepad to use with racing games and flight games. For everything else KB+M reigns supreme!

I say this every month, but I always enjoy these articles. Very "standard" this month and it sucks there was so much less input this time around. I've simply made it a habit to scroll the results and then immediately take the new survey.. it only takes a couple of minutes.

The unique question is a hard one this month! Of course I want to be 100% optimistic for 2015 but I am also not delusional. Even IF SteamOS/machines finally comes out swinging and people buy them I still see the number of people who would switch to Linux for their main desktop to be very small. The plus side here is that they don't have to for it to matter. So long as people buy steam machines (WITH SteamOS) the studios/publishers still holding out will have no choice anymore if they want to remain relevant!

After the strong 2014 we had I am excited to see what 2015 holds for us. So long as we don't take a step backwards 2015 will be great as well! Hopefully we will get to see a finished UE4 game that pushes the limits of the engine come to Linux.. that is what I want to see the most. Well, and something truly beautiful using CryEngine3 to come to Linux.

EDIT* OH! AND my obligatory remark about Nvidia making multi monitor/multi GPU gaming a real thing on Linux! Maybe it will happen this year? ;)

I too usually cringe when a game I am interested in is Unity based. While some of the glaring issues such as game pads and vsync may have been worked out the overall performance of the engine in Linux (and windows really) is pretty low most of the time for what is actually being output to the screen. It is simply not a very optimized engine. The old saying "a Jack of all trades and a master of none" comes to mind when I think about the Unity engine.. it may be one of the most platform independent engines out there.. but it isn't optimized well for ANY of them. Why this is? I don't know, it is simply what I have observed after playing many Unity based games in both Linux and windows.

I have high hopes for UE4, its cost to developers and it being a damn powerful engine will hopefully bump Unity from its top spot on the charts of engines used by smaller devs in the coming years.
