In the "end" it will force all drivers no matter the OS or blob to be a better driver and produce the visuals we all want in games. Nobody wants to be last. So if it makes them prudunce better drivers then "problem solved". It's odd to say as a linux user, I love OSS and our platform, but I am going to use whatever graphics driver "works". If tomorrow the nouveau driver out perform the nvidia blobs then Ill switch to the OSS driver.
*EDIT
The win fanboys like to cry "it just works" with winblows. Linux needs to "just work" for it to really be a viable platform for anybody but us "tinkerers". Yea, you and I are ok with having to administer our systems. BUT People in general ARE dumb, they expect things to be handed to them and they reject things that are different. Windows and MacOS hold peoples hands... Most linux distros? not so much. It's sad, but it's true. We all love open source, we all love linux. The average "joe blow" doesn't know the difference. They just expect it to work. If linux is to become a viable alternative to winblows, it HAS to recognize this.. weather you and I like it ALL or not. Linux becoming more "user friendly" doesnt mean we lose the OS we love. There will always be "ubuntu" for the noobs and "Arch" for those of us who "know the deal".

Quoting: FutureSutureValve did this for AMD's proprietary driver, not its open source driver, hence my initial question. Your understanding is my understanding as well, and yet Valve is effectively pushing AMD's proprietary driver by doing this.Yea I get it, But I still don't feel like they are PUSHING it, that's all I am saying. In the end, they want steam machines to "win". I want the same obviously. Anybody who is a linux gamer wants steam machines to win. They (valve) want SteamOS to work well on ANY driver you choose, so naturally at some point they are going to have to say "hey, we need to pay some attention to X driver" At that point they are looking at AMD's blob, next "week" it will be nvidia's blob they are cataloging bug reports for. As an Nvidia user there are PLENTY of issues to be addressed. When they are done with this they will go after the open source AMD or Nvidia bugs. Good luck to them with the nvidia OS driver lol. They are invested in it ALL working is what I am getting at.

I've been an AMD processor fanboy for as long as I can remember. The only intel cpu's I have had, have been in laptops. If I built it, it was/is running an AMD proc. For me their gpu's have never appealed to me. Yes, they tend to be cheaper than nvidia's offerings, but they normally produce more heat (heat = more power used, duh.) and usually perform "worse" than a comparable Nvidia. So you make up for the price in power bills and upgrading GPUs more often.
I know, I know, you can say the same thing about their processors as of late, and if they don't do something about that SOON, then I'll be forced to go the intel route for the first time ever when I decide to upgrade my mobo/cpu probably end of next year. The only reason I swapped my 1090t for an fx8350 was because it used the same socket and had an advantage when compiling large code projects (ie, Android), not because I thought it would help my gaming, which I don't think it did.
If AMD is watching, make better CPU's (NOT getting an APU for my workhorse, sorry) and bring down the HEAT output by ALOT on both CPUs and GPU's and maybe ill build an ALL AMD system one day. For now though, PLEASE get on the ball with your new CPU arch, you guys needed it "yesterday" and I don't wanna go intel next time.

Quoting: FutureSutureDoes Valve really love open drivers?I wouldn't necessarily say that doesn't mean they don't prefer open drivers, they just know that people are going to use the best driver for the graphics cards that will be in their steam machine GAME "console". There will surely be AMD steam machines so they want to know they work right. It's my understanding that you run the open driver for AMD for gaming on linux and the blob if you're running Nvidia on linux.

Quoting: IcarusAny ideas why it's killing Linux? The game crashes or it's locking up your system? either way, we are going to need more info to give any advice. What are the specs of the system you are playing it on? If it's just crashing the game can you launch it from the command line and then copy/paste the output to pastebin.com and then post the link please. Quite surprised it's crashing, it has been running flawlessly for me and that's amazing because NO unity based game has ever ran flawlessly on my system.

I agree, It's not just been limited to us linux people either I have seen some bad press on early access/crowdfunding game in quite a few places lately. Those that really do need the business model in order to make the games they want are going to HAVE to start being extremely transparent about things in order to rebuild some trust with the gaming community. So good job Simon Roth.

"hey guys, sorry but things didn't quite go according to plan. Instead of making you sit and stare at the game in your game list and not be able to play it while everyone else is. Here is what we have, it mostly works, help us squash the last bugs!"
^ That is what I took from it, and I like that a lot. Kudos to them. I have not got into TD games yet, but I am interested. So ill add it to my wish list and ill eventually pick it up to support these seemingly honest developers.

I Played for about 8 hours straight on sunday. Fallout 3 and NV are among my favorite games of all time, having wasted hundreds of hours on each. I think I may have played Fallout 1 a little years ago but I can't say for certain. The turn based combat was/still is one of the hardest aspects of the game for me. It's a game mechanic that normally turns me right off to a game. I like the atmosphere and the background of this game so I have forced myself to stick with it and I have become much more comfortable with it. It's still kicking my butt though. I feel like my tactics are not quite right or maybe I am just not leveling fast enough, I'm not quite sure yet. I don't pass up a chance at combat or any chances I have seen to gain XP, and I hunt for loot everywhere. So I think it may just be my tactics like I said.
I started over 4 times on sunday trying to figure out a squad that worked for me, I learned REAL quick that a good surgeon/field medic is a MUST. Bullets can become a problem so make sure you have a guy/gal or two who are proficient with blunt objects, as I have found myself needing to beat things and people to death on more than one occasion, plus it helps conserve bullets. I know it's not a great comparison but my first fallout 3 playthough I hardly used any guns/rocket launchers, I hack and slashed my way though it with bats and super sledges ;) Also manually save A LOT, it does not auto save nearly enough.
As for monitor/resolution problems someone else mentioned. This seems to be one of the best programmed Unity engine games that I have ever played in that regard. It picked up my ultra wide res and just worked OOTB and at fullscreen (not windowed). This has NEVER happened with a unity game before. All the other ones I have had to run in a window (borderles) to get to span my monitors and even then I normally have to go tweaking configs manually and there have been a couple that just refuse to play nice.
I give it two thumbs up so far, it's aggravating for sure (at least for me), but the post apocalyptic scene and story I love, so I'm really trying to stick with it for the long haul. I assume I'll get better at it.

Seems to be running really well for me @ 1920x1080 with everything maxed out. I've only been playing offline bot matches so I can't attest to "online" games yet. It does suffer from the same problems as the rest of the source engine games when it comes to running it on 3 monitors though. Mainly, everything appears to default to it's lowest setting no matter what I have set in the options.

As for CS:GO, I downloaded it as soon as I saw this article so the bin and whatnot were not there yet, no amount of checking local content or restarting steam seemed to get it to download the missing bits though =/ I had to remove it and reinstall completely. It's almost done (90%) but I can see the bin is there now so YAY!

Quoting: GoCorinthiansMetro 2033 Redux being uploaded at Steam too. aehoooooooooO!It has been up, the linux testings branch is closed to us normal peasants though. Looks like they were just updating their test branch. Unless you are seeing something I don't see yet, and I just refreshed the page too. Man would that make for a FANTASTIC day, I have been impatiently waiting to play it.

You can download most of it, no binaries yet though, so you can't actually play.
I won't be a competitive player, I'm not that kind of gamer. So who here will be playing casual matches? I don't think I have any IRL friends who play it so ill probably be looking for people to play with.

Quoting: MetallinatusOne thing I noticed.... this game has no "[BETA]" or something like that on my library.... does it mean the "beta" stage is already gone fast like that or what?On steamdb [External Link] all of the depots (win, mac and linux) are all labeled as beta. They executable depot for linux is marked "Encrypted" so it looks like there may be a closed beta for linux first. Just a guess though, it may just be a staging thing.
