Arma 3 Showing Small Signs Of A Linux Version
22 Apr 2015 at 1:45 pm UTC Likes: 1

Linux needs a good multiplayer FPS like this. I would prefer battlefield myself, but Arma would work too.

Quoting: aaannzThis is the only game (and trying out Kingdom Come alpha) for which I restart to Win, so I'm all for it. But I highly doubt they will make Linux version. They invested heavily into their DX11 based renderer and AFAIK removed OpenGL backend they once had in A2. Maybe if Valve is pushing them Vulcan way...
IF it is a VP eon "port" then they wouldn't need an OGL renderer. Eon is like a wrapper, it would translate DX11 -> OGL on the fly. That is how Bioshock: Infinite was done.

BUT, The inclusion of a data repo would be a bit odd for a VP port wouldn't it? They normally share the windows data and only have a Linux depot for the eon binary.

Sales Statistics For Linux Games From Different Developers, Part 4
19 Apr 2015 at 7:57 pm UTC

Quoting: liamdaweAs much as I would love to get stats from AAA titles and bigger titles, they generally don't respond (I've tried). A lot of it is down to publishers not wanting to share the information which is why these articles are always indie focused.
I wonder WTH the rationale behind not being willing to divulge those #'s is? Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't make any sense to me. I'm curious if the percentages are higher for the "more popular" games. I know I'm not much of an "indie gamer" even though I've played and enjoyed some games that I would have never given the time of day before now that I actively TRY to help support those bringing us games and I'm probably not the only one. The "You have ## friends who play XXXXX" on steam is usually pretty loaded down on the AAA Linux titles and most of my friends on there are you guys/gals, with the exception of my brother, father and a couple of IRL friends. Most of my IRL friends who are gamers are console people.

Dying Light Reviewed On Linux, What I Really Think
13 Apr 2015 at 7:57 pm UTC

Yep. That is pretty much how I felt about it. A good game damn near completely ruined by its own ending.

On top of that I HATE that I paid for the season pass. There has not been nor will there be (unless unannounced) dlc for this game that I have or will play.

I doubt I've used any of the dlc weapons, I've not played either of the dlc "mini games" and I have no interest in a "battle dome" type scenario that has been teased. I was expecting story expansion type dlc for this game especially for the price they asked for the season pass. What they have given and shown thus far for dlc are the exact definition of milking your customer. Complete waste of $$ for me.

Humble Indie Bundle 14 Adds New Games For Linux Including Contraption Maker
9 Apr 2015 at 12:58 am UTC

I have to say perf. on Shadow Warrior seems to be pretty good. I've been toying around @ 5760x1080 while running on ONE Nvidia GTX 970 since Linux won't use my other two GPU's and I am usually in the 50-60fps range.

I am SOO excited for the games we have and are getting. I know multi gpu is not only a minority but is also a PITA to dev for with OpenGL, but I CAN'T wait for Vulkan to come around and completely shake up the space. 6 years ago... DX (direct X) made sense.. today? not so much. You would have to be a FOOL to create/write/develop your game and/or app based on an API that would lock you into a "dead in the water" system.. Win8.1? people hate it.. Win10? people don't know they hate it yet. Win Phone 7,8,10? it sucks and is why their market share blows.... meanwhile.. Android rules. IOS (as much at I hate) rules.. game consoles.. "rule" (at least the the US, where my fellow citizens are idiots). Tablets rule, the kiddies at /r/pcmasterrace of all places are starting to see the light of Linux! People who would never talk crap about gaming in Windows ar currently praising it as the superior platform and are seriously starting to see the light and understand that just maybe we have known what were talking about all along. Our PC's are OURS! and we should be able to make them do whatever we want OUR machines to do. The "idiots" are finally starting to get it.

The day of Linux is coming! How can it not at this point .. WHY ON GODS GREEN EARTH! would you build your game/app to ONLY work on ONE of those systems?!?!?!!??

Even if Linux doesn't take over the desktop... enough people are starting to realize that things need to be completely cross platform.. and that is an amazing start. Honestly at this point I don't care if people "switch" to Linux.. I just want to be taken seriously.

you would either have to be mentally retarded or someone is paying you big bank to make the decision to write your app/game to only play in one space. DX12=dead.. Vulkan=future!

DING DONG DX IS DEAD!!!!

Quoting: WorMzyI got the steam survey today too.

Not sure if that was an April fools, or if I'm the 1% for this month.
lol, I saw your comment and figured I should fire up steam just to see if I get the survey. I GOT IT! first time ever seeing it in Linux. Proud 1%er ;)

Quoting: EKRboiwhat kind of severe mental illness would you have to have to think that using an API that locks your code to a single platform (DX12 -> Win10) is a good idea?!?!?! when you will have Vulkan that seems to be essentially the same thing and will work on ALL of those devices and platforms! (Vulkan -> Linux, Win 10,8,7,xp?, Mac, Android, IOS, PS4, PS3?, WiiU, Wii? etc.. you get the idea). Choosing DX would be insanity!
You know, I used to be pretty pessimistic about this; that Microsoft had the PC gaming industry under very tight control which has basically come from their utter dominance in the O/S of choice. Everyone [developers] used direct3D because 99% of gamers used windows.
I'd even argue that there is still that attitude; dev budgets are limited, and they want to maximise their return on investment. The case for bothering to support non-windows platforms was present, but still not enough to justify the budget of actually setting up a decent cross-platform dev environment.

However, I feel like the momentum now is definitely changing. We are at a big turning point where direct3D is really starting to not make as much sense, even for the big development teams. We've got some huge names behind Linux gaming, we've got some huge names behind Vulkan, and it's getting to the stage where Microsoft and direct3D are hopefully becoming the niche-product. I'd even argue that having the PS4 on x86 helps the case for big companies to invest in *good* cross-platform development, and that non-direct3D is no longer something to be scared of.

I'm excitied! :-)
Exactly my point. DX no longer makes sense! THANK GOD!

Star Citizen For Linux Is Being Held Up By Crytek

It would seem to me that a game of this scale and complexity would be a "shoe in" for Vulkan/DX12 to get it to as many gamers as possible. With it still in what I would consider "early" development it would make sense to me to move it to an engine that supports Vulkan and DX12 to be able to "create their vision" for the game, which is GRAND IMO.. should they pull it off.

That being said.. I'll post here what I have been posting everywhere when talking about Vulkan and/or DX12...

I want to think that DX12 will be dead in the water. From the info gathered thus far, what is the main difference in Vulkan and DX12? DX12 will lock your code to Windows 10+. Since we already know Vulkan is "based" on Mantle and after seeing THIS [External Link] today it may be safe to say that DX12 is quite similar to Mantle as well.

So what am I getting at here you may ask? well.. I'll tell you.. In this day and age when MANY people have multiple devices, in multiple form factors, from multiple manufactures and running a range of operating systems.. what kind of severe mental illness would you have to have to think that using an API that locks your code to a single platform (DX12 -> Win10) is a good idea?!?!?! when you will have Vulkan that seems to be essentially the same thing and will work on ALL of those devices and platforms! (Vulkan -> Linux, Win 10,8,7,xp?, Mac, Android, IOS, PS4, PS3?, WiiU, Wii? etc.. you get the idea). Choosing DX would be insanity!

end rant.. sorry :P

^ I mean.. c'mon.. if not given permission that would be considered plagiarism by any sane person lol.

EDIT again* i just came up with a catchy little jingle based on The Wizard of Oz that I hope I/we can be singing in the next couple of years :D

Ding Dong! DX is dead. Which DX? The damn MS DX!
Ding Dong! The Wicked DX is dead.

New Nvidia 349.12 Beta Driver Released
27 Mar 2015 at 12:07 am UTC

Quoting: mrdeathjr
Quoting: filsdHow do you guys install the latest nvidia driver?
I'm on ubuntu 14.04 and the the PPA Xorg Edgers bugs on installation. :/
In my case use manual installation .run package, using this steps..........
I tried Mint once, I remember having a terrible time getting rid of/blacklisting nouveau in Mint over its cousin Ubuntu.. In ubuntu simply blacklisting it was enough, in mint I actually had to purge it. any idea why that is?

Also you could simplify your process by simply adding "nomodeset" to the kernel line once and booting normally. It wont load any display driver, resolution will be terrible since it will be running in generic frambuffer mode. but it gets the job done.

sudo service stop mdm (in mint, i think it is lightdm in *buntu these days) - this will end your GUI environment and land you @ tty(1-7)

sudo su

echo "blacklist nouveau" > /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

apt-get purge nvdia & nouveau

chmod +x nvidia_driver.run

./nvidia_driver.run

reboot and done.

I know your way works, but is far more steps than is necessary. It can be done in a single boot instead of multiple boots.
