Here's how Starfield runs on Steam Deck and desktop Linux

Quoting: BotonoskiFunnily enough, I can only get this game working on the Steam Deck. Upgraded to the latest version of Linux Mint with a 6.20 kernel, helped the game launch but it crashes minutes after boot. Can't get it working under Windows 10 as it shows an error of my GPU not reaching minimum spec, but it's a 6700XT with the newest drivers so I think it's because my version of Windows 10, being LTSC, is too old to run Microsoft funded games...
Don't really want to "upgrade" my Windows install, nor do I want to risk bricking my Linux install by tampering with drivers... So I guess I'll just tolerate the smudgy 30 fps look on the Deck until things iron themselves out on the Desktop side.
Shame really, the plan was to Stream it from my Desktop onto the Deck while at home and go full handheld on the go like I was doing with Cyberpunk.
I too had many crashes with rdna 2 GPU like you, problem was using old 2.9 vkd3d version. After installing latest vkd3d [External Link] it then worked (if using steam experimental, skip this because you already have newest).
Also VKD3D_CONFIG=force_host_cached is said to fix many crashes on AMD GPUs give that a try as well.

Quoting: drlambSections of New Atlantis are the only areas I've seen sub 60FPS @ 1440P maxed out (no FSR) on my system.

Edit: Kernel 6.5 + mesa-git

It honestly has me eying an AM5/DDR5 + 7800X3D upgrade but I think I'll wait for the inevitable performance fixes as the 5800X3D should be able to hold me over until I upgrade my rig for Fable (self-imposed goal).
I'm on AM5 7900X3D (and 6900 xt) believe me it is not very good at all (New Atlantic 1440p Ultra with optimization mods from nexuxmods, falls to 50 fps constantly and struggles to maintain 60 with 99% GPU load with occasional 70-90 fps in close quarters.. though gpu is under-volted and power-limited and cpu is not overclocked either.. turning on FSR gives me a mighty [up to] 6 fps more lol). This game is absolutely not optimized and is a disaster (so a normal 2023 AAA release). AMD get your money back lol!
I think your expectations are just plain weird. Don't play on Ultra. Look at the Hardware Unboxed tuning guide, you can get quite a bit of extra performance by tuning some of the settings and it will look nearly identical.

I am actually impressed at how well the game runs considering the hardware I have.
yeah nowadays a game merely "running" is considered "good enough" by majority of ppl thanks to repeated disastrous game release one after the other. People have no expectations at all.

IMO in 2023, 120 FPS should be considered "good". And real 120 not fake frame/upscale clown fiesta.
On top of that, Starfield looks by no means justify its hardware demands. Nowadays only $1K+ GPU owners can truly enjoy "smooth" pc gaming due to lack of care on game devs' side to optimize. Not to mention Intel/Nvidia owners disaster.

Overwatch 2 becomes the worst user-reviewed game on Steam
18 Aug 2023 at 2:08 pm UTC Likes: 2

Quoting: BeamboomProblem is, 95% of the user "reviews" of the game don't even touch upon how the actual game is as it stands today. They go fully meta and leave a thumb down.

That's user "reviews" in a nutshell. Whiner valley.

I don't f'ing CARE what was originally promised or how the first game was or whatever. I want a good game to play, and don't want idealism and fanatism dictating if I should like something or not.
The reason is Blizzard's reaction to them over the years. Blizzard's BIG lie of PVE in OW2 and predatory business model and worse, gambling nature of its game has resulted in extreme hate and anger from player base towards it. This is why people say the negative review is deserved. It is simply a direct reaction to actions of blizzard over the years.
You say you don't want to be dictated to like a game, well Overwatch was FORCED into gaming world by heavy marketing and advertisement to a level people called it GoTY before even releasing. It was rightfully nick-named "Overhype".

About your last sentence, if you want a good game to play, Overwatch 2 is certainly entertaining as gambling is. It relies heavily on the addictive/gambling nature of MOBA games. So beware what you're walking into.

AMD GPUs to get Ray Tracing turned on for Mesa 23.2

Quoting: LoftyId actually like to see the Downsampling feature Windows has ported over to AMD Linux. one of my monitors is 1080p but can accept a 4k signal, if i run this as a desktop resolution and select a higher than native 1080p in game (for instance: 3200 x 1800 or 2880 x 1620) one it looks really nice in game compared to native and it rpretty much removes the need for any AA even though the monitors downscaling is chucking lots away. On the desktop it looks horrible of course for reading.

edit: this

https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/vsr [External Link]

Although id even like the ability to run higher than 4k on a 4k screen. Because why not for older games.
This already exists on Linux. I too am a downsampling fan and use the commands below to downsample (just note that you need to replace "HDMI-A-0" with the name of your own monitor. Type "xrandr" in terminal and replace HDMI-A-0 with X in the line that says "X connected primary..." ):

rendering 1440p on 1080p monitor:
xrandr --fb 2560x1440 --output HDMI-A-0 --mode 1920x1080 --panning 2560x1440 --scale 1.33333333x1.33333333

rendering 4k on 1080p monitor:
xrandr --fb 3840x2160 --output HDMI-A-0 --mode 1920x1080 --panning 3840x2160 --scale 2

Reverting back to original resolution (1080p):
xrandr --fb 1920x1080 --output HDMI-A-0 --mode 1920x1080 --panning 1920x1080 --scale 1

RT is a huge fraud and marketing BS of Ngreedia, forced into existence by corporate power alone.

It's like a car manufacturer claim they can make "flying" cars now that lift up to 10 CM above ground and charging a lot more for it because they got to this "technology" sooner than competition! 10 CM above ground is as much a "flying car" as amount of "RT" today in recent games. 4090 ($1600 BTW) runs 20 fps with "real" RT (Cyberoverhyped 2077 Path Tracing).

RT is absolutely not ready and needs YEARS more to be able to enter mainstream video cards. So far majority of RT games have terrible performance even outside "RT" scenes. RT so far has destroyed game optimization because devs will assume people will just turn on DLSS/FSR not knowing what even are these (they add blur to games particularly when you move around, as opposed to native rendering) so they would not optimize as much as before.

Quoting: DamonLinuxPLWorth to add to use GPL you need good CPU. If someone try it on old or weak CPU then game experience can be worse. The important thing is that you can easily turn it off. Just a reminder, in case anyone else experiences this.
I don't think this is true.. I've been gaming for a few months now on Mint with gpl enabled manually on 8 years old 4790k (though my gpu is new) and for example on God of War (2018) FPS is very good (though stuttering exists but less so than on Windows 7 + dxvk where gpl does not exist). Another example, Plague Tale Requiem has basically same performance with/without gpl (tho didn't test much without gpl..) on 4790k.. can't say I have seen any performance tanking on my CPU (it runs good btw considering my CPU..)
I don't follow, how do you enable it manually since months?
Isn't this a new extension?
Doesn't the GPL need to be explicitely supported by the game engine or dxvk and the likes?
GPL has existed for a while now as development version of RADV mesa driver (but disabled by default since it wasn't fully ready) but anyone who wanted it could pass "RADV_PERFTEST=gpl" as an environment variable to a game (I did this through lutris) and it becomes enabled. It is now becoming enabled by default (after 23.1 driver is released that is) so doing above is no longer needed. It is a driver feature and AFAIK independent of dxvk/proton..

Half-Life: Alyx fully playable without VR even on Steam Deck thanks to a mod
13 Apr 2023 at 6:29 pm UTC

This is perfect for ppl like me who will never ever consider VR for gaming. IMO VR for only gaming purpose is degeneracy.
Just imagine seeing someone looking around at nothing for hours, in delusional world, touching basically the air and drowning in nothingness... being eaten alive by technology all that for a video game.. it is below human dignity IMHO and for me at least will be a no go for eternity :)
So I'm grateful for this mod!
